If folks are unaware of the Ohio Bobcat Club, it is because they don't ever attend games at Peden/Convo or they don't read their emails from the university.

I'm gonna disagree.  I attend games and I check my email daily.  The only reason I signed up for a monthly donation was talking with McDavis at the Nashville Bobcat Bash.  And I've read some threads on here about it since as well.

I've mentioned it to at least 20 people over the last week and I typically receive blank stares.  And these are people who go to at least a few games a year.

Ozcat, I am in your camp.  I am on the mailing list and am frequently included in the vulture count on this board but until I started looking into season tickets for football I was not fully aware of the OBC.  Also like you said, other alum who attend a few games a year are completely oblivious so basing our sucess on the amount of OBC memberships is not a fair assesment.

Statements were considered off the record and not official department...

Doesn't mean the original statements weren't serving a purpose.  (and the more awkward, less official they look the better - so boy does it look unofficial).  Don't know.  Probably wrong - but went down a similar "message" path with a client when a sales guy "left" but came back.  but if I'm right, Groce stays at Ohio - so maybe it is just green colored glasses thinking.

Or it could make him feel good that we want to keep him so badly that we are willing to go out and get money wherever we can find it. I'm not sure where some of you think this money is supposed to come from.

The fact that we paid our coach $250,000 is enough to tell everybody where we stand on the totem pole.

Anybody who doesn't know about the OBC is not into details. It discussed all the time on this forum beside all the other stuff that is mailed, etc.  All the stuff about OBC membership needed to buy tickets thru the U.  Where has everybody been?

I think we are talking about people not on this forum or obsessed with Ohio sports. Easy for those people to slip through.

But isn't there a commercial for the Bobcat Club at every game during one of the media timeouts? So if you've even attended a few games, you would have heard about it. I'm glad folks are spreading the word though.

I guess, but that means:

1. You're attending home games.
2. You're paying attention to ads read over the PA during timeouts.

There is a large segment of Bobcat Nation that don't meet these criteria.

I guess I was thinking of the people that OZ mentioned who were casual fans that attended a few games each year. But even if you don't know about the Bobcat Club, you can always support a team by buying season tickets.

I'm pretty sure there are only three things that have ever caught my attention at an OU sporting event that did not have to do with the game being played or the 110:

1)  Viking Magic
2)  Rufus' head falling off when he was parachuting into Peden
3)  The Asian lady on the unicycle catching bowls on her head

Breaks in the action are usually consumed by staring at co-eds . . .

Not to be the turd in the kangaroo court punch bowl, but in 2010, after the Georgetown victory, $250,000 was raised immediately after the victory in an effort to entice Coach to stay, and was tied to an extension: http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/042210aab.html

This was called the "Men's Basketball Enhancement Fund", and I know this because I get a statement for it every month.

I have posted several times on this board since 2010 about it.  If at any point in time someone felt passionately about donating funds to increase Coach's salary, they could have called the Convo to make a donation.

Aside from the fact that Coach has a suitor at this time, this is no different than what happened in '10, except for the 12 hour firestorm created by a story that contained no direct quotes of OHIO staff, and the negative reaction that can well be attributed to poor syntax on the writer's part leading to what has been the absolute worst of interpretations by Bobcat Nation.

Could staff had said nothing about trying to raise more funds to retain coach and just replied: "no comment"  Certainly.  But if so, isn't that message worse than actually conveying that they want to retain Coach and are attempting to do all they can to do so?

And I'll leave you with this: how many of you have actually called the Convo to donate specifically for Coach's salary at this point?

This and D.A.'s post just above about the fund for MenHoopCoach are about the only worthwhile things posted on this board in the last 48 hours.

Too often your internet is just a place for unleavened blurting.

I'm not sure I philosophically agree with going into my pocket to directly pay a Coach's salary. If my ticket purchases, OBC donations, concessions, etc go towards his compensation, that's great. However, if I'm directly paying a piece of someone's salary - I feel like that entitles me to certain access which isn't included in the fund D.A. mentioned. If I contribute, do I tell him when to call "Chips" or "Smash?" on offense? - Or when to press and when not to press? - Or to recruit Player A or not recruit Player B? The Coach isn't my direct report b/c I don't directly pay his salary. Ask me to donate to something like this, and there's going to be some quid pro quo if I do donate. What if I don't like one of his assistants, can I tell him to fire that Coach? Not ask, tell, because of course - I'm paying him to do his job. In effect, is he a dotted-line report to me?

Not saying it's wrong if you do contribute to the fund, I'm just laying out why it's not for me. That said, I'm probably going to double my OBC donation this year, so I'm not skimping on the donations in case anyone is wondering.

Another good reason for hanging scoreboard - screen messages backed by PA announcement 'bout items like Bobcat Club & benefits.................just not while the Asian lady is performing..................

Story out of Oxford is that Charlie Coles was making $185,000.00. Now that is cheap.

I'm with BL on this one.  I don't want to directly be paying for someone's salary.  If the money I give to the OBC goes to a salary, fine.  I don't/can't give much myself, but did increase my donation earlier this week.

We will never compete with the big ten in salaries. I would not donate one nickel to keep any coath. VCU is paying Shaka Smart 1- 1.2 from what I've read. That's why he is staying. But if he is offered something like the Kentucky job, he's gone. So VCU is protecting themselves from most bigger jobs, but not all. The MAC pay level is low. We should not start paying more than the median plus a little more. That is reality.

Seems like he bought himself some extra time as head coach by working at a discount. I know their fans were rumbling for a few years prior.
