Whenever I'm having a bad day, I just go Pete Weber and scream in my office "Who do you think you are!? I am!".

I would encourage anyone who's having a rough go with the Groce news to give it a try. Works wonders.

Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune and an ESPN analyst all posted within last hour that they're hearing Groce and it's a matter of "when," not 'if."  Sounds about as official as you could get, unless they all have the same "wrong" source?

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/11558295-419/illini-poised-to-hire-john-groce-as-new-basketball-coach-sources-say.html

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/chi-sources-ohios-groce-set-to-become-new-illini-coach-20120327,0,4045279.story

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/colleges/post/_/id/5851/bardo-hears-illini-could-hire-groce-soon

From the above Sun Times link

“All I know is, it’s going to be an absolute firestorm for the guy when he’s hired,’’ a Chicago prep basketball analyst said. “It could get ugly for him with Chicago people. It’s going to be imperative that he’s careful in putting together a staff.’’

Why would Coach want to leave his current situation for this?

Also, I just heard on Scott Van Pelt's radio show that per Andy Katz: "Groce is the Illinois favorite, but it's not a done deal"

Probably a lot of rubbish from the writer, but I think it helps point out the nonsense going on there.

Why would you want to go to a place where you're the 4th or 5th choice and people are raising cane over the fact that you're even interviewed? There's not enough money in the world to make me walk into a situation like that.

Because you believe deeply enough in your abilities that you see that lack of support as a challenge, not a negative.

Not saying the announcement isn't coming, but often reporter's "sources" are the same person or , in some cases, each other,

Same as recruiting players with that "swagger" who can walk into a dome in St Louis playing against the UNC Tar Heels and still have the confidence/belief that they can get the job done.

To be successful in this business you have to have a little bit of that in you. Groce certainly does. Bad situation? I believe I can prove em wrong!

Now I PERSONALLY wouldn't do it. But, you can see the line of thinking.

Wow that is a serious firestorm over there. You have to be a little bit crazy to take that job, and maybe Groce is a little bit crazy...or just confident.

I know the whole discussion of a "destination" job was brought up earlier in this thread, but here's another thing to consider.  Does anyone know what Groce's dream job is?  I would have to think that at or near the top of the list is succeeding Matta at OSU.  There's a definite possibility that the OSU job opens up within the next 3-5 years considering Matta's disability.  That's just enough time for Groce to bring back Illinois and position himself as the #1 candidate for that job should it become available.  A couple years of Big10 success is the easiest way for him to get that job.  I'm sure that thought likely crept through his mind at some point.

This is starting to feel lik the UNC game.

Down early (Groce is outta here)
Halftime (press conference at 3)
Mid way through the second half (there never was a press conference)
End of regulation (Not a done deal yet)

Overtime  (?)

Hoping it ends with Matt Lasher kicking Illinois back across Indiana.  Get him to the airport.

I think it is time Ohio had it own press conference, with the AD, President, and Board standing as one saying they support John Groce and thank him for what he has done....not that I think it will keep him, but it would be fun to see the reaction from Illinois fans, media, etc. :)

Ohio should try to get a little PR from this mess.

They are talking about the Board of Trustees going over the AD's head now and nixing the hiring.  It sounds like they are demanding an African-American hire.  Don't know if there's any truth to any of it though.

Even if it's not completely true, it does appear clear that at least one or more of the board members is unhappy.  I'm sure it's still a boatload of $$$, but if I'm Groce right now I'm having serious second thoughts.

Just my opinion... but Ohio State might not be his dream job. He was only there for 4-5 years and he is from Indiana, so maybe Indiana is more of a 'dream' job than Ohio State.

But he is a Matta guy, and with how the Matta tree seems to hate playing each other would it stand to reason they might not want to follow his footsteps? Even if it was Matta's choice?

But for him to get an elite job, he would have to take a step up and prove himself and Illinois is a job that can do that (ie Self to Kansas)

Groce has gotten where he is by being a competitor. I'm sure being told "you won't be successful there" would just motivate him even more.

I know before the BoT was wanting an african american hire. But supposedly they gave the AD a go-ahead after being turned down by a few african american candidates when they offered Stevens.

Now, the BoT might have a change of heart on that saying... well we didn't mind a non-minority hire if he was a guy like Stevens... but Groce might not be reason enough to do that??? That's my only thinking along those lines.

A resolution to this, be it good news or bad, would certainly benefit the mental health of this board.
