I remember Walt saying that as soon as Groce got the job in Athens, he wanted to come straight here, rather than play in Columbus. Groce sat him down said he made a commitment to Ohio State and it's not fair to the Buckeye program if he just left like that. You can't tell me that he would let Coop transfer to his new school for 1 year. He obviously stayed for his freshman and part of his sophomore seasons. It just makes zero sense. Just because he took the Illinois job does not mean he doesnt care about the Ohio program.

Facts don't matter to blitzy, only all-caps statements sometimes followed by a sting of punctuation marks

And if you are DJ, your name isn't going to be any hotter than it is right now. I could see him being more inclined to test the NBA waters now than take his name out of the mix for a year by transferring.

Sorry, but I don't think any NBA G-M would seriously look at Coop right now after shooting 3-20 against Stilman White. Work on the shot and bump that shooting percentage up 5 points. Coop does that and he's got a shot at the league next year.

I don't think he is NBA ready either, just makes more sense to test those waters instead of sitting a year and then playing a year for a team that may or may not be any good.

Some of you people are COMPLETE MORONS...the purpose of a unofficial sports message board is to invoke discussion and thought. And there is a thing called free speech. So while you may want to keep your nose in the sand or up whatever unholy area it may be. I chose to write about all the possibilities and when a person involved in Ohio sports also questions via social media if the current players are staying..I would say people inside have no idea what the guys plans are apparently. And so what he posts that he is staying..he has that option of doing whatever the heck young Mr Cooper wants to do. Point Blank.

Free speech also gives people the right to call you an idiot and a nuisance.  So don't be surprised when it happens.

He is not going to Illinois.  Sitting out a year to play for Illinois wouldn't be my choice and I'm an Illini fan.  I would stay and try to do something special with my best friends.  Illinois went through the same thing when Self left, we all feared transfers.  They all stuck together and were special.

I just chuckle when people whine and say  Blitz...please stop with your message board posts..Like I will really stop posting what people are wondering but only a few have the BALLS to say. Nope so how about you NOT READ MY FRIGGN POSTS??? What a GRAND IDEA.  Now back to the topic of the thread...looks like reputable news sources are reporting statements from the players that they are staying..good news but you never really know until it's official.  Looks like Green is locked in unless he wants to sit another year. Oh yeah I actually had DJ Cooper at my house when he was training at the run and shoot in DC. I never ask him about personal matters and honestly athletes hate it when all you want to constantly talk about is their sport, especially at dinner and even then they will tell you what you want to hear.

Blitz, here's the thing about "never knowing until it's official": That has to do with something that involves altering the status quo ... not with "what is" (the status quo).

I would be more concerned with Walt using the "already graduated, don't have to sit" loophole...if that hole is still open.  I imagine Walt will probably be done in June, no?

Nope.  Nobody beats Ohio University's Sport Management Program.  Walt wants to coach.  He can join Groce at Illinois when he's done at Ohio.

I agree, besides Walt can develop a relationship with a second head coach that could increase his chances of getting into coaching in the future.  Earning a Masters would be big on his coaching or business resume after his playing days are done.

I am 49 and would love to have a year to come back to Athens to go to school and spend some time at the Pub and other establishments on Court Street.  I guess the problem is my wife and daughter won't let me.

Hate me now BRING IT. No seriously this was just put out there by someone online associated with athletics. Dj would have to red-shirt but is this something he would do?? I like Stevie but is he ready for a whole season starting? Pretty sure the coaching choice affects this and or Groce offering DJ a spot.

No, no, thank you for bringing it up.  Even though "someone online associated with athletics" could be anyone from the AD to a waterboy and makes the foundation as strong a s twig in the sand as the tide comes in, it is worth allowing folks to know what a random person anonymously put out on the internet.

That said, despite Cooper being from the state Groce is going to, there is no reasons to believe that his transferring would take place, or even make sense.  He is on track to graduate from Ohio, he is on track to put numbers up that will make him an all-time great, he would need to sit out a year before playing at Illinois, and the layoff could do more harm than good for his NBA aspirations.  He would sacrifice a year's worth of salary of playing ball (NBA, or Europe) to reunite with Groce.  Plus he would be leaving friends he has made on the team.  In fact, I think we would be hard pressed to find a single example of a three-year senior starter and leader that left a team to follow his coach.  So consider it brought up, considered, and dismissed at this time by rational and reasonable people.  Now if we bring in a coach that runs a slow-down, prodding offense and announces he is changing the culture and approach of Ohio basketball, and tells the seniors he is going in a different, then feel free to ask your confidant associated with athletics if he has heard anything new from Cooper.

I'm sure most of the players are in that camp. Similarly, most Ohio State football players were in the #CoachFickell camp.

And most Illinois players were asking for their assistant coach.
