Akron only had 3,385 for last night's game.  So much for a sellout.

I guess that #ThinkBigger is nothing more than the AD hashtag that the locals and students haven't bought into.

That's pretty sad, especially in a well-populated area.  Longest winning streak in the country and national buzz, veteran star players that have been around awhile...I know it is a weeknight but I just don't understand how there isn't more buzz.  They have 30,000 students and hundreds of thousands of alumni, you'd think a lot of those people would be jumping on the bandwagon here.

30,000 students includes their branch campuses.  And their main campus hardly has a residential feel to it.  Loads of commuters.

And if someone graduates from there and is somewhat intelligent, the first thing they'd do is move away from Akron . . .

That's all well and good, but we're only looking for 5,000 people here.  I'd imagine at a minimum they have more alumni in the area than Ohio has alumni in the Athens area.

That attendance vs. CMU last night wasn't bad for a midweek MAC game.

Agreed.  Luckily, almost all of our alums LOVE OU.  Other MAC schools have a really hard time, for whatever reason, instilling that feeling in their alums.

They have a tough time instilling that feeling because their Alums ATTENDED those schools

But seriously, I'm a doctoral student at a hospital associated with Buffalo, so I interact with A LOT of UB students (both graduate only and undergrad + graduate), and NO BODY has warm fuzzy feelings about UB.

The Associated Press' Tom Withers (the man is a machine, not sure when he actually sleeps) with a rather glowing feature on Akron:

stats.washingtonpost.com/cbk/story.asp

I'm running the story on an inside page tomorrow and had to cut a lot from the story for space. I won't lie, I kept the Ohio paragraphs in there. I admit my bias in the matter.

Last year, after losing to Ohio by one point in the MAC championship, the Zips watched as the Bobcats advanced to the national quarterfinals before losing to North Carolina.

"I almost cried myself to sleep every night," Abreu said. "I was very proud of them for what they did. They did what we wanted to do and made some real noise. You always look back and say, `that could have been us.' I have no doubt in my mind that this year that we can do it."

That's quite the confession.

Agreed. I enjoy the mutual "hatred" these teams have for one another, but deep down I think for most fans and players alike, there is respect that's based on knowing that each team is the only thing that stands in the way of the other.

So the MAC is "ultra competitive" according to the article. Thats news to me. I guess it would be cool if Akron won out except against us in Athens and then in the final in Cleveland against us and got an at large.

Akron continues to suck against MAC teams not named Ohio, down 25-16 at half in Fiami. ALmost lost to CMU and KSU, was down 20 at home against Buffalo, Zips have enough talent to beat these lesser teams but I don't know if they have the mental focus to run the table.

It is a shame how the Bobcat student fans acted during and after the game.  Verbally attacking senior citizens is not my idea of good sportsmanship.

Luckily, we in Akron have more to do on a Saturday night then attend college basketball.  Akron, unlike Athens, is not located out in the middle of no man's land!!

95% of the time, I agree with that statement.  Not know the circumstances, it's hard to say much more than that.

But, are those things to do FREE (or if you're not a student, cheap) and as exciting as your basketball team is?

Remember Bobcat fans:  If your school is not in the "middle of no man's land" nobody will want to venture out to watch college basketball, especially in a vibrant, culturally blessed city like Akron.

I've played pickup games at Ping with a bigger crowd than a sold out JAR though.

So by your logic, you are all losers since you had nothing better to do than attend a basketball game.  And by the way, we had more than double your sellout at our last home game.  I know, I know that's because we had nothing better to do while you have the thriving metropolis of Akron to keep your fans away in droves.  Well except by your statements is sounds like you did attend belying your earlier claim that you had so many other things to do.
