One other observation that I've found humorous:

Akron fans think DJ's a 'thug'.

OUr fans thinks Abreu's a 'thug' (and that Zeke's a whiny little girl).

If I'm totally objective, all 3 of them appear to be great student athletes whose fans should be proud of them.  They all play the game the right way, and by all accounts, they get it done off the court as well.

Being totally objective, DJ Cooper is awesome, Abreu is a thug and Zeke is a whiny little girl.

They're all great student athletes, but to be fair to Akron, if a (hated) foe's star player carves us up and is talking trash at every moment possible, we would have the same comments as they do.

Cooper is still awesome though.

I'm concerned that certain jsf don't think the problem is significantly about rebounding.

See, if we were 50-50 on rebounding...or close to it...what would our record be?

Why would someone else's opinion concern you?

The one thing that Akron has this year (aside from really good bigs) that I haven't seen from them in past years is confidence.  I read all the papers yesterday, and saw how Alex is talking.  He thinks that we "stole" their rightful place in the Dance last year, and that OUr run was really the run that they should have been on.  A little humorous.

Dambrot is comparing their program to VCU and Butler.  Hmmm . . .

As previously noted, their fans think they're a Final Four caliber team (although to be fair, we have/had our fair share of those as well).  Pump the brakes a little.  Accomplish something first Zippies, and I'll be more willing to give you the credit you want.

The thoughts and opinions in this thread vary.  I'm not quite sure that if we both play our 'A' games that we come out on top.  I think it's extremely close, 1-3 points, but their post players are better than ours, and that will insulate them from a cold shooting night outside.

We had a balanced scoring attack - 4 guys in double figures.  We got to the line more than they did.  We converted at the line.  We took care of the ball.  If we would've know before the game that we'd have 4 guys with 10+ points, outscore them from the line, and have less than 10 TOs, most of us would have assumed we would win.  Not so fast.

Somebody said it in this thread, and we've all talked about it all year:  Walt.  He's our X-factor.  To me, the glaring stat was Walt's 3/13.  While that wouldn't be a concern if he attempted 8-10 free throws, it is a concern, because he attempted only one.  If he sinks one more 3 pointer and ends up 7/13 from the floor, we're looking at 9 more points, and we have ourselves a ballgame.  We still lose, but it's very close.

So, in our next (hopefully two) matchups, it's clear we have to have a more efficient Walt.  But where else do we make up those points we need to win?

1)  Ivo could show up to the gym.  That would help, IMMENSELY.  Not only did he put up a goose egg, he was burned on the defensive end.  Treadwell dominated him.  I still don't get how he's listed at 6'9", and TJ is listed at 6'5".  TJ looks bigger when he's on the court, he certainly plays bigger, and I thought he did a pretty decent job defensively when he was down in the post.  I'm all for TJ taking some of Ivo's minutes if Ivo continues to go into the appropriately coined "ghost mode".

2)  Rebounding.  I agree with JSF's premise that we don't have to be a great rebounding team to win, but if we can even grab 5 more per game, that would help a lot.  11 2nd chance points for Akron could be cut to 5-6, and we're closer.

3)  Better defense.  Team effort.  It was there for 12 minutes on Saturday, then it disappeared.  I have to call out Coop a little bit.  Alex burned him a few times.  I don't expect that to happen again, though.  Would like to see Green on Marshall for 5 minutes ini the next game, just to wear him down a little.

I'm nowhere close to panic mode.  Alex and Zeke won't combine for 15/18 again.  Treadwell though, could have a bigger game.  They are a matchup problem, at least for us.  The comment over on Zippyland that they want OSU gave me a laugh.  That would NOT be a good matchup for them, at all.  I don't think the Bucks are all that great this year, but they'd handle Zippy pretty good.  The Zips are built to cause guard oriented teams without great bigs issues.  Shooting can overcome that though, so it is very clear, we need to be 'on' in round #2.

Let's hope their newfound confidence turns more towards arrogance.

Good stuff.  What baffles me is that they keep saying Final Four.  If they think they are that good, then why not raise the bar a little higher and say #NationalChampionship.  Silly Zipparoos.

It will be very interesting to see how both of these teams handle themselves after Saturday's game.

Makes me think of that line from Braveheart before one of the first battles when one of the English dudes says something like "They seem a little too optimistic to me...."

They are set up to be 12-0 come February 27th however.

Good.  They can leave 12-1.  Let's just hope we're right there with them.

Was really hoping we would pull of this win, but as everyone knew Akron would probably hold home court.  Would have been nice to keep the game closer, but Akron got some near perfect shooting from guys that don't normally do so, so you would expect them to fall back to earth.  As well as DJ and a few others who had a bad night shooting to at least play a bit better next time.  The way they talked after this game though I think Akron will be over confident if they come into the Convo undefeated in MAC play.  That would make for a great set up for a rocking Convo and a big in your face win.

I went into this game expecting we would lose up there, we'll beat them in Athens, and it will come down to a neutral court in Cleveland in March.  Even when we jumped out to the lead, being a rational sports fan, I knew we couldn't shoot 75% the whole game.  And that's what it would have taken to win this game when you get slaughtered on the boards.  I heard Russ say we had two second chance points.  Two.  How many games are you going to win when you go one-and-done nearly every trip down the floor?  Not many.

As for taking Akron seriously on a national stage, call me when they have beaten a top 25 team.  Call me when they get their first ever NCAA tourney win.  Until then, they are still a team that has never proven they deserve that kind of respect.  And for a team that is unbeaten in conference, they really don't scare me.  Let's face it, OU played poorly after the first 13-ish minutes of that game, and it was still in question with a few minutes to go.  And that was with Zeke going 8/8 from the floor and Abreu having a career day.  They played a great game, we played poorly for the most part, and were still very much in striking distance with a few minutes to go.

Based on what I saw on Twitter, Akron IS getting votes.

They did get votes in todays polls:

4 votes for "kron in the AP puts them at #41, 2 votes in USA Today/ESPN puts them at #43.  I'd like them to get as high as possible for their visit to the Convo.

Because coaching is the difference between hitting layups and open jumpers. Abreu played the best game of his career and Zeke was simply excellent. That was probably the best 30 minutes Akron's played all year. Won't happen again. We'll get it back.

Well, if those are A) Forced, low percentage drive vs bigs you don't stand a chance against, and/or not using position smartly layups, and don't even draw a foul with the miss, OR, B) Bad "open" jump selections ("Bad" as in wrong "shooter", too early in the clock, or from Cleveland instead of w/in Akron city limits), and eerily reminiscent of season long bad habits (w/multiple broadcaster comments pointing out such, or you saying to yourself same) - Then yes.........coaching has not addressed and/or corrected consistent bad habits.............

Best Point Guard played for Akron tonight...

Disagree.  DJ had 6 - 8 assists screwed up by teammates that either missed easy shots or were fouled.  Abreau played as well as he can, But DJ "ran" the better game.

Absolutely.

When the MAC Championship takes place in Cleveland, please drive the bus up I-71.  If you take I-77 then leave #23 at home.  Two trips this year up that route and all you get is:  6'9"  two games--two points, and his man today ate him for supper.  I still scratch my head.  6'9" and in two games not one offensive stick back.

I won't make any excuses for Ivo's performance tonight.  He played a pretty terrible game.

But he's nowhere close to 6'9".  I don't care what the program says.  He's 6'7" on a good day.

He's 6"9" - Unfortunately he thinks he's a 6'4" wing.........................

  • Does anyone else think TJ needs to start over Ivo right now?

Yes. Last time JC did not start Ivo he came off the bench w/some fire.

Treadwell's outside shot is ugly.  Stop him inside and live with his outside.

Five more boards a game, oz?  That's a marked improvement (so rebounding is a problem) and would very significantly change things better for us.

I thought that we didn't shoot free throws very well against 'kron.  Box score says 21-29 for 72%...but I recall a lot of misses in the first half.  Surprised that we shot the free throws that well.

Free throws weren't a problem.  Hustle wasn't a problem.  Bad shooting and rebounding were the main culprits.

I still don't buy that Ivo is 6'9".  I just don't see it.  I do agree that he thinks he is playing the 3 out there.  We need Ivo to figure it out.  He's important.

And Akron shot way too high a percentage. It's hard to win when the other team shoots 56.1 percent. As some have said, part of that was the Zips just playing lights out. They hit tough shots. But the defense definitely could have been better.

On the way to work this morning a radio station was actually auctioning off tickets to Akron's sold out game against CMU tonight.

Seems as if Akron finally has that city excited for its team...wonder if they can keep the attendance up if their streak breaks.

(I must point out their gym only holds < 6K....but for Akron, that's good!  )

Ivo's last basket made was with 6:16 left in the 2nd half of the Miami game. Sine then he has played 61 minutes without scoring a single point (0-5, 0-0 FT). He leads the team with 5.3 boards/game.

Ivo disappeared last Feb too going  0-2 @NIU, 0-0 @EMU, 0-2 UNC Ashville, and 1-7 @ Kent. Hopefully he gets back on track soon, we need his game.

I honeslty am glad to hear that.  It shows attendance isn't just there for a hyped game.  I was really very curious to hear about the attendance number for them tonight.

Let's hope they do. The league needs more of this. Miami may be a lost cause but there are sleeping fanbases out there that could really bolster the conference.  If they could get any kind of sustained success, Toledo and Ball State could really be good markets.

Don't get me wrong.  I'd like to see them draw well, but against CMU, I'm not sure they'll get fans in the arena.

Toledo is my odds on favorite to win the West next season.  Pearson will be a senior, and likely the best player in the league, and along with Brown, could feature the best backcourt in the MAC.  They'll get Weatherspoon next year as well, and he'll be one of the most athletic big guys in the conference.  Depth will be their concern.

If they play well, they could be right up there with us for league attendance crown.

That's pretty sad, especially in a well-populated area.  Longest winning streak in the country and national buzz, veteran star players that have been around awhile...I know it is a weeknight but I just don't understand how there isn't more buzz.  They have 30,000 students and hundreds of thousands of alumni, you'd think a lot of those people would be jumping on the bandwagon here.
