We got beat by a team that seemed to shoot lights out from just about everywhere.  It seems that the Bobcats can't leave anyone open this year for a split second   Does that mean we quit doubling people if we wish to prevent that?

The game in Athens will be one of the most electric atmospheres we've seen in quite some time.  Our boys will be absolutely pissed when Akron comes to the Convo and I'm willing to bet we have a crowd that could almost fill their gym twice.

I'd love it if you were right, LoganElm, but we again got stuck with a "school night" slot when it's time for Akron to visit the Convo. While I'd love for there to be 8,000 to 10,000 there that night, I just don't see it.

When the MAC Championship takes place in Cleveland, please drive the bus up I-71.  If you take I-77 then leave #23 at home.  Two trips this year up that route and all you get is:  6'9"  two games--two points, and his man today ate him for supper.  I still scratch my head.  6'9" and in two games not one offensive stick back.

I won't make any excuses for Ivo's performance tonight.  He played a pretty terrible game.

But he's nowhere close to 6'9".  I don't care what the program says.  He's 6'7" on a good day.

If both teams win all of their games until that point, you might be surprised.

After sitting in that crapbox gym for a few hours, I still don't think the sky is falling, and I don't think we can make any firm assumptions until each team plays at home.

That said, the worrying thing is that it's a lot easier to overcome poor shooting when your strength is in the front court. You can rebound, wait for easy shots, get fouls. Once our shots stopped falling, it was all but over. I agree with Ozcat that we're better built to grab an NCAA Tournament upset, but it's looking tougher to actually make that Tournament.

Akron's stars have improved more since last year than every player on our team but Keely. We've still got a great team, but Zeke is obviously no longer the seven-foot stack of Charmin he was for the last three years, and Treadwell is just a force. I don't expect it to happen again, but Abreu had one of his best games and DJ was simply not good today. He forced passes and shots, had a lot of turnovers, and generally never looked in the flow of the game. It happens, and it's clearly an anomaly. I'm more worried about the shooting of Kellogg and Offutt, who had a ton of great looks today and missed the majority. With our lack of size and lousy rebounding -- neither of which can possibly change this year -- missing open shots will equal losses to any decent team. I actually thought our front court was OK tonight playing against bigger and better competition. We lost because our guards let us down.

The effort was there, and I don't get the people blaming the coach. We're simply missing too many shots considering how awful we are at rebounding.

Last and not least, that was my first time in the JAR and I don't think I'll be back. The ticket office was great, the fans were fine, but the GA seating is a torture chamber. After visiting crAkron, Kent, and BG in the past year, I'll never complain about any aspect of the Convo again.

Just got home for the JAR and some random thoughts from an evening of OHIO Hoops, albeit a bit negative in nature coming off a loss:

IN GENERAL:
*Electric atmosphere, but everything just felt small and tight.  Actually probably the perfect size MAC Arena based on average attendance figures, but I bet the dimensions of playing in there made the players feel claustrophobic.

*I went hoping to win, but expected a loss.  Never like a loss, but now that the OOC results have determined it's all an exhibition season, it was part of the process.  We lost there last year and we lost this year.  With us having ruined Akron's seasons in years past,, the sell out and the way they appear to have approached this game--result wasn't that big of a surprise.  And in the grand scheme of things, a meaningless game big picture even though no true fan or competitor wants to think this way.  That's just reality.

*Tonight was a contrast in sytles and attitude.  Finesse vs. Physical.  Blue Collar vs. White Collar.  Black/Blue Uniforms vs. White/Green.  Something tells me OHIO will look more like Akron 2-4 years from now when JC gets his recruits and his stule of play installed.  Not saying which I prefer, just thinking JC probably likes Akrons style more than his own teams?

PLAYER THOUGHTS
Now for a bit of negativity, but these were thoughts I was thinking sitting there tonight:

*If they kept a stat for highest percentage of a shooters shots being blocked, would Walt not be amongst the nations leaders?  Also, lowest FG percentage from 2 feet in?  (assuming it's just the results of a 6'3" guy going to the rim alot).
*Speaking of crazy stats, if they kept one called, "Who Gets the Highest Percentage of Shots Made on Them When They're Defending and are right in their Offensive Players Face?"  Nick would be in the Top 10.
*Ivo just struggles mightly against bigger, physical players--hence his wanting to go European Style Big Man.  He had the corner to drive numerous times and just didn't.  And when he did drive, he drove at such an angle to where he couldn't make an offensive move and had to pass out.  Didn't appear the defenders forced him to change his angle, he just drove with no intent to score the ball.  Showed 0% confidence to even try anything aggressively towards the basket in an attempt to score.
*Reggie got schooled in the paint like I had never seen tonight.
*JC shows a total lack of non-confidence in his back up point guard (or to phrase it positively, a total  sense of confidence in DJ).  I mean when DJ comes out it's hurry up and get a drink, towel off and get to the scores table.  Not that I don't like this, just seems that rotation is measured in blinks of the eye and not minutes or possessions.  At one point he even called timeout to just get DJ back in.  Interested to see what next year looks like confidence wise at that position.
*Kellog is my favorite player and his stat line looked nice tonight--but I bet JC would like to have a more athletic all around player at that position.  Whether it be helping bring up the ball; handling pressure; guarding--Nick still remains a spot shooter who makes the best of the other phases of the game through being fundamentally sound and hustling.  But being a natural in areas outside of the spot up shot....he's not.

BOTTOM LINE:
Akron is good.  But for some reason I think that if we meet them on a neutral court in March--we'll squeeze one out again.  Just a hunch.  Zeke won't go 6-6 from the floor and Abreu won't go 7-10 away from the JAR. And if Akron keeps rolling, they'll have their typical great record, be listed as a Bubble Team and unless they win in Cleveland, will be on the list of "Last 5-10 left out" and onto the NIT for a first round loss due to discouragement.

I take OHIO loses pretty hard, but for some reason I didn't tonight.  Not sure why?

I did see this and was very disappointed by it. It seemed he tried to go straight to the locker room, but I was glad to see someone stopped him and made him get in line to shake hands.

I decided not to post last night and gave myself some time to think about it.

  • I disagree the effort was there, especially in the second half (save TJ).  After DJ got knocked down on the three, no one got back on D and gave Treadwell a wide open look on D.  It was a complete lack of hustle and effort.  I can't remember when I’ve seen a Bobcat team give up like that.
  • As for Zeke, I was disappointed we didn't take it right at him more, specifically right after the ref pulled him aside after almost giving him a T post dunk.  I thought Kadeem using a few fouls on him would have helped keep him out of his game.  I was surprised he got away with as much as he did when "getting position".  JC was obviously complaining about the elbows he was throwing as well.  He may have been perfect from the field tonight, but I am still not impressed.  I saw one, maybe two good offensive moves tonight.  Maybe I missed more, but I still think he’s a soft player.
  • Treadwell is one player of theirs whose game I really like.
  • Abreu played the best game I've ever seen him play tonight.  He deserves the game ball IMO.  I will be interested to see if it was an anomaly, or he will return to his averages against us outside of the JAR.
  • Does anyone else think TJ needs to start over Ivo right now?
  • Thank you Ozone for making the trip and being respectful to the Akron fans behind you, even if some of their fans didn’t return the favor.  Also, I’d be embarrassed if anyone in the Ozone, especially centered in the front row, came out looking like that Akron student in the Speedo.
  • For the first time at the JAR (including non-Ohio games) all of the Akron fans around me were very nice.  This is why I don’t judge a fan base by the worst they have to offer.

Overall, Akron as a team just played better last night.  I am not a fan of their coach, but I respect them as a quality team.  All in all not surprising that we lost, just disappointed in the way we responded at times.

Could not agree more.
You watch something like this and really start to worry beyond this season.
0-5 against quality opponents.
0-1 against Winthrop.

I agree with calling Oklahoma, Memphis, UMass and Akron Quality opponents.  But if you are including Robert Morris and their 161 RPI in that 0-5, then you would also have to include wins against Richmond (RPI 81), St. Bonaventure (RPI 127), Oakland (RPI 155) and Western Michigan (RPI 85) as well.

Best Point Guard played for Akron tonight...

I agree Abreu out played DJ tonight.  However it did take Abreu playing the best game I’ve ever seen and DJ seeming to be just a bit off tonight.

I thought Nick showed a couple of good moves tonight outside of spot up shooting.  I had a neutral fan there with me who even commented about how much better (and more often) he was at putting the ball on the floor and finding an open shot.

TJ needs much more playing time at the expense of Ivo and Ricardo needs more playing time at the expense of Offett.

I live in Akron and was at the game last night.  I am surprised that no one has mentioned that for a good part of the game that Akron had a 6'7" forward (Harney) guarding DJ.  They also pressed almost all of the game.  Will other teams try to disrupt DJ by guarding him with a much taller person?  Since I live in Akron, I probably know more about their team than most and if they are making  an average amount of 3 pointers, the opposition is in big trouble.  With the improvement of Zeke and Treadwell, it becomes very difficult to both guard the perimeter and sag back and help out on their bigs.  I think we can win in Athens, but I am concerned about a neutral court.  They have some pieces we just don't have underneath.

I'm sure the team is disappointed by this loss, but I'm still hopeful we have a shot at a shared MAC title. Anything can happen coming down the stretch, but here are the remaining MAC schedules:

Ohio:
Home: BG, Kent, EMU, Akron, Miami
Away: Ball St., CMU, BG, Buffalo

Akron:
Home: CMU, BG, Miami, Kent
Away: Miami, EMU, Ohio, Buffalo

I'd say their remaining road schedule is tougher. Both teams will get a strong test from Buffalo on the road. As we remember from last year, EMU on the road is no gimmie as well. And of course, Akron still has to travel to Athens.

Obviously, all road games are big if you want to win the MAC. But, Wednesday's game against Ball State is a must. We must bounce back and play well after a disappointing loss fo Akron, against a BSU team that has really been struggling in MAC play.

I would also like to see us ad a full court press to our portfolio. We have quickness and depth,  when the sh*t went down hill after the 12 minute mark, maybe a full court press might have interrupted their run?

If we see the defense that we saw early in the first half more often, then we are in good shape.  That's what we are missing from last year.  I'm not sure if Christian has a lack of faith in Hall or his injury has kept him on the sidelines, but he was huge in our Tourny run last year and showed glimpses of it again vs Akron.

Another note is that it is that Akron is playing their best basketball right now.  I'm completely fine with that.  If you read fan/player reactions on their message board and on Twitter, it's amazing how much more confidence they have gained from beating us.  I'm seeing a lot of #ncaabound #finalfour and type stuff.  They are the better team right now and they deserve the right to do all the talking right now.  However, I really believe this team will put it all together come March and that is the only month that winning streaks matter.  Like many have said before, that is the way this team is engineered.  Winning in March is in this team's blood.

I'm concerned that certain jsf don't think the problem is significantly about rebounding.

See, if we were 50-50 on rebounding...or close to it...what would our record be?

Yeah....some BIG pieces.

I was hoping Green could give us some quality time underneath.  It's looking more and more like he won't. It's also looking like OUr big pieces are currently high school seniors.

I'm not concerned because teams pummeled us on the glass last year and we won anyway. Yesterday, we got back 60% of Akron's misses. Not good, but that's a number we can win with. The problem was shooting (2-14 from three in the second half aside from Hall's two desperation makes, not a whole lot better inside) and not forcing turnovers (only 17.5% turnover rate for Akron).

Our game is shooting and turnovers, not rebounding. Had we shot well and turned Akron over, their rebounding advantage would not have mattered.

I think I've found something more entertaining than the Blundering Herd's message boards after we beat them, the Zippies' board after they beat us.

They sound like they beat Duke in the Final 4. Zeke's mom wants to know if her baby can win the POY and Defensive POY awards or does he only get one. Another poster is positive they're going to get top 25 votes. And on and on, its really funny stuff.

And then there's little gem from Elton Alexander-

Quote:expand_more
Respect is earned, not given: Akron's yen for national attention is starting to border on paranoia, with comparisons to programs like VCU and Butler practically ludicrous. Understand, coach Shaka Smart at VCU and Brad Stevens at Butler inherited programs that won multiple championships in their respective leagues, had multiple NCAA Tournament wins under their belts and Sweet 16 experience long before Smart and Stevens were hired and took their teams to the Final Four.

Akron has been to three NCAA Tournaments and has not won a tournament game.

Akron has won one MAC regular-season title.

The Zips have been to seven Mid-American Conference Tournament championship games, winning two. Both victories came when Akron was considered the underdog, which means they have never won the tournament title as the favorite. Yet they yearn to be recognized.

"We've been flying under the radar for too long," Akron guard Alex Abreu said after the Zips dismantled Ohio University, 86-72, Saturday. "It's finally time for some national recognition. Hopefully it will bring some positive energy around this program, we've been needing it for a while. It's going to be great. We don't plan on losing anytime soon."

But until the Zips actually do something outside of the conference, they will only be recognized as a MAC team. The schedule says . . . Akron's best win this season was a home win over Middle Tennessee State (RPI 32), 82-77 in overtime. Akron's two other wins over teams with top 100 RPIs (No. 87 Western Michigan and No. 90 OU) also came at home. In road games against teams with top 100 RPIs -- Creighton, Detroit, Oklahoma State -- the Zips are winless. Akron's best road win so far is at Kent State, which has an RPI of 192. Akron's RPI after its win over the Bobcats is 57. Last season Akron topped out at No. 55. In what many consider Akron's best season ever, 26-7 in 2007, the Zips had an RPI of 67.

Did something I rarely do today--watched recording of game--and boy do you pick up a lot of things you may not have watching live.  Few different takes from my notes yesterday:
*I have confidence DJ will be fine, Nick will hit his shots and even Reggie will provide his inside contribution.  But we have to have Walt and even Ivo helping a little.  If Walt doesn't play big in Cleveland, we're done.  Ivo tried on defense, but offensively he wasn't even a consideration.  Totally not in the game.
*While Akron had a host of people contributing inside, Reggie was a one man inside show for us on offense.  As  I watched again, he was simply oversized on defense, but really played ok on offense.  Bottom line, we really have to have our 4 man (Ivo or whomever) helping inside a lot more than they did Saturday.  It was Reggie/Jon and nobody else.
*At literally every critical moment when the game was in the balance we jacked up quick 3 point bombs without running much of an offensive set.  If they go in they're fine, when they don't, they're illadvised.  We really appeared to panic and wanted to get it all back too quick at some key moments.  Many of those "critical moment shots" were well beyond the 3 point line too.  DJ, Walt and Nick just weren't on their games from long range.
*On several occassions I watched off the ball when shots were in the air and boy does Akron do a lot of 2 handed shoving under the basket, often times allowing them to get rebounds. Speaking of rebounds, lots of time we had position and either got shoved out of the way, or didn't keep our butts on them along them to slide around us for a rebound.  Need more toughness and fundamentals to compete on the boards with these guys.  They got 75% of the 50/50 balls.
*The officiating was fine and didn't determine outcome.  Would've helped if they had called some of the shoving underneath when shots were in the air, but otherwise..not a game changer IMO.
*Surprised their pressing full court and speeding up the game didn't hurt them as I thought they'd prefer a slower, half-court type game.  Instead, it got us a bit out of rhythmn and caused us to take some hurried shots.
*Final score was not indicative of the game.  Their not missing and our not hitting late, made this look more lopsided than it was.  This was a 5-7 point contest and tight most of the way.

Utlimately, I stil think that on a neutral court if our top guns play their best and their top guns play their best--we win.  Just happens on this night Zeke/Abreu played their best, while DJ & Walt didn't (and Ivo didn't show up at all).

As we left the arena, a few of Akron's finest were yelling at us saying "DJ Cooper...MVP!" and "OU Sucks". I heard a guy shout back "Have fun in the NIT!". That about sums up my feelings.

I'm still confident that we'll beat them when it counts. And I'd bet some pretty good $$$ it's Ohio vs. Akron in the finals again.

The one thing that Akron has this year (aside from really good bigs) that I haven't seen from them in past years is confidence.  I read all the papers yesterday, and saw how Alex is talking.  He thinks that we "stole" their rightful place in the Dance last year, and that OUr run was really the run that they should have been on.  A little humorous.

Dambrot is comparing their program to VCU and Butler.  Hmmm . . .

As previously noted, their fans think they're a Final Four caliber team (although to be fair, we have/had our fair share of those as well).  Pump the brakes a little.  Accomplish something first Zippies, and I'll be more willing to give you the credit you want.

The thoughts and opinions in this thread vary.  I'm not quite sure that if we both play our 'A' games that we come out on top.  I think it's extremely close, 1-3 points, but their post players are better than ours, and that will insulate them from a cold shooting night outside.

We had a balanced scoring attack - 4 guys in double figures.  We got to the line more than they did.  We converted at the line.  We took care of the ball.  If we would've know before the game that we'd have 4 guys with 10+ points, outscore them from the line, and have less than 10 TOs, most of us would have assumed we would win.  Not so fast.

Somebody said it in this thread, and we've all talked about it all year:  Walt.  He's our X-factor.  To me, the glaring stat was Walt's 3/13.  While that wouldn't be a concern if he attempted 8-10 free throws, it is a concern, because he attempted only one.  If he sinks one more 3 pointer and ends up 7/13 from the floor, we're looking at 9 more points, and we have ourselves a ballgame.  We still lose, but it's very close.

So, in our next (hopefully two) matchups, it's clear we have to have a more efficient Walt.  But where else do we make up those points we need to win?

1)  Ivo could show up to the gym.  That would help, IMMENSELY.  Not only did he put up a goose egg, he was burned on the defensive end.  Treadwell dominated him.  I still don't get how he's listed at 6'9", and TJ is listed at 6'5".  TJ looks bigger when he's on the court, he certainly plays bigger, and I thought he did a pretty decent job defensively when he was down in the post.  I'm all for TJ taking some of Ivo's minutes if Ivo continues to go into the appropriately coined "ghost mode".

2)  Rebounding.  I agree with JSF's premise that we don't have to be a great rebounding team to win, but if we can even grab 5 more per game, that would help a lot.  11 2nd chance points for Akron could be cut to 5-6, and we're closer.

3)  Better defense.  Team effort.  It was there for 12 minutes on Saturday, then it disappeared.  I have to call out Coop a little bit.  Alex burned him a few times.  I don't expect that to happen again, though.  Would like to see Green on Marshall for 5 minutes ini the next game, just to wear him down a little.

I'm nowhere close to panic mode.  Alex and Zeke won't combine for 15/18 again.  Treadwell though, could have a bigger game.  They are a matchup problem, at least for us.  The comment over on Zippyland that they want OSU gave me a laugh.  That would NOT be a good matchup for them, at all.  I don't think the Bucks are all that great this year, but they'd handle Zippy pretty good.  The Zips are built to cause guard oriented teams without great bigs issues.  Shooting can overcome that though, so it is very clear, we need to be 'on' in round #2.

Let's hope their newfound confidence turns more towards arrogance.
