Great finish, thought we were done. Two changes I would have made though in overtime:

Smith has not lost a center tap at the Convo this year. Not sure sure Keely has won one. So why didn't John start the OT?

Also would have like to see Rico, TJ rotate offense/defense.

Rico and TJ can't rotate offense/defense since TJ has been playing primarily at the four spot. More realistic would be Kellogg and Rico rotating on offense/defense as well as TJ for Jon Smith.

FWIW, Reg won the opening tip in this game.

kents played tough.  After we went on our big run, they had  a stretch where they hit a lot of shots, even as we were scoring some (it wasn't as if they were scoring and we weren't).

I guess what disappoints is reality.  We are not a really good defensive team.  We don't have a group that can lock the other side up when needed.  And the way that we play D leaves us vulnerable on the boards.  Our offense is okay, best when we can run and play at a high pace and move the ball.  We are who we are and will just have to hope that we have a few more big moments in each close game than the other side--since it's unlikely we're going to have easy wins in our tough games.

I will disagree somewhat and say it was our defense at the very end of the game that actually won it for us.

You are right in saying Ohio is what it is, but I would counter with, "so what?"  There are no teams in the MAC that dominate game after game, Akron included (see their recent string of narrow victories).  The last thing Ohio was last year in the MAC was dominant (I actually think Ohio has more convincing wins this year than last) yet Ohio became a team within an OT of reaching the Elite 8.  I'm a glass half full guy-I take it as a positive that we can come back with tremendous poise at crunch time, after having blown a 15 point lead, and get the win.  If anything, Ohio's last 2 wins against Kent State shows Ohio has more poise when it counts than Kent State and I think that bodes well for the MAC tournament.  We'll see.

Edit: And we overcame the overtime deficit with our best player on the bench.

Maybe, Mark.  But we returned essentially everyone after a Sweet 16 run.  And the MAC is roundly cited here as being pretty bad after us and 'kron this year.  Also, I'm with borna that our sights should be higher than just competing for the top of the MAC.

What were the views in the 'prediction' thread?  I know that those were pre-season infused with green kool aid.  But I'm betting that our performance in the key games hasn't been what we'd've hoped for.  (Big W's over such as Ball and CMU don't impress me.)

Ideally the team should have kicked Kent's butt.  What matters is the  Cats in the end won a close game against a key rival.
I think and hope this game gives them some of the fire they will need come March.

I think Kent gets really cranked for two teams -- Ohio and Akron.  It's really odd to have a season without an OT game this late; it was good to see the team respond so well.

Sometimes Stevie looks a little out of control, so I was apprehensive when DJ went out.  It was great to see Stevie handle a pressure situation the way he did.

Any word on the official attendance? It looked like a good crowd on tv, probably in the 9k range or so from the way it looked.

I wouldn't describe him as out of control. More like he's got no plan.   You can tell that DJ is generally expecting something when he goes one way or the other.  Stevie looks like he is looking for something to open up but not sure what.  IMO mentally he's more of a shooting guard trapped in a point guard's body.

Any Cat fan who is disappointed with this team's performance this year should be ashamed of themselves. We are 10 and freakin 1 in the MAC. Last year we were a sweet 16 team at 10-6 in the MAC! We were fighting for the 4 seed to get into the quarters. Now we're battling for the freakin' 1 seed! Let's go Cats fans, we're good!

That's paid attendance.  I think actual was probably in the high 6000s.  Not surprisingly with the early start, there were a lot of no-shows today...

I could watch the last minute of this game for days.

Has to be one of my favorite basketball sequences I've seen live, ever.

That was a great crowd for an 11 am start. Kudos for the "Breakfast Blackout" promotion and free McDonald's...it certainly got the O Zone out of bed. Lot of locals, families and groups there too. There's not many programs in the country that can draw 8,500 for an 11 am game.

after today's win we are 19-6 (10-1), a year ago we were 19-6 (7-4) and had just dropped 2 in a row to EMU and Toledo.

I like Akron carrying the burden of being undefeated, we can just ride their tail and draft and save energy for the final sprint.

I personally want no part in a rematch with KSU unless it's in the MAC Championship.  They may be a seven seed on paper right now, but they scare me.  Hoping Akron gets them on their side of the bracket.

I really don't understand the necessity of winding up with a halfcourt shot when you have over 3 seconds.

+1

You're probably better throwing from halfcourt with a clear look vs a few steps closer in more traffic.

Yes, by that logic, all shots should be from beyond half court. ;)

I can see a semi final containing Ohio, Akron, Kent State, and either WMU or EMU.

+1.  I'm pretty sure I've watched it at least 5-6 times since I got home last night.  The excitement and emotion in the last minute or so is fantastic.

I did a little research on this out of curiosity.  As stated, we had essentially 8,500 in the house yesterday.  Past weekends the 11am slot has had:

1/5     Pitt at Rutgers - 5,081
1/12   St Johns and G-Town at the Garden - 11,057
1/19   VMI at Coastal Car - 2,400 (I'd guess it seats 4,500?)
1/26  Syracuse at 'Nova - 18,000+
2/2     UC at Seton Hall - 6,960
2/9     UD vs Temple at UD Arena - 12,000+

These numbers tend to dispel the "too early for a good crowd" notion.  Along with that, how good was that finish for us on national TV?

Off track a bit, but Dayton continues to be a benchmark for fan support. If things fall through for Dayton and Xavier leaves them for the Catholic 7, can we please get them in the MAC? It could be a great rivalry.

Its hard to beat a team 3 times in one year.

But they'd only have to win once more. It's not three times, it's one. Winning the first two doesn't make the third game harder.

Not true. Games arent played in a vacuum. They have 85 mins worth of tape showing what we do against their schemes both on offense and defense. They would have plenty of footage and experience to make adjustments for a third matchup. They are also going to be pissed off and extra motivated if we faced them again as well. I want no part of Kent a third time.

A team that wins the first two games wins the third a high percentage of the time. The statistics don't back up this myth.

If a team beats another team twice in a season, they are statistically more likely to win the third game. In the NFL, it's 65% likely that the winner of two division games in the regular season will win the playoff matchup. In the NCAA, where the top teams are better and the bottom teams are worse, it's 81%.

Think about it. Memphis beats Rice twice during the regular season. They have RPIs of 24 and 310 respectively. What makes you think that the terrible, terrible Rice Owls are somehow more likely to win that third game? They aren't, and the results back it up. Sure Ohio-Kent third matchup will likely be a lot closer than the Memphis-Rice third game. However, the winner of the first two games are more likely to win the third by a 4 to 1 margin.
