DJ is a national stat leader in another category as well - technical fouls. #2 in the country, w/4. We all know he can get a little hot headed - but we also know those often pay dividends too (affect momentum, get some calls going OUr way after the T, make Zeke cry, etc.). Part of the "dagger"/aggressive mind set also - the results have certainly been a net Plus/Plus over the career.

The more assists dj gets, the happier I am.  When he is dishing and getting into the lane he can dominate the game.  When he stands out on the perimeter and jacks up threes, I think he is less effective.  He can be frustrating at times but he is absolutely the best all around player in the MAC today.

And how many games this season has he been "standing out on the perimeter and jacking up threes"?

Well, since you asked, just about all of them - at some point in the game. YTD 3 pt stats - 41/117 - .352%. In fact seven (yes 7) players on the team have a better 3 pt shooting %. Now, a lot of his attempts have been when we had a bit of a lead, early in the possession clock, and of the "put the dagger in" type (seems to miss a lot more of those to me). My bet is his assts avg would be nearly a full point higher (and leading the nation as opposed to 2nd) if just one more of those a game was a more determined effort to work the offense and try to get a better shot or dish to higher % shooter/position. I ain't yellin' and screamin about this, I love what he is doing this year, but facts (both observed and recorded) - is facts.

1) he's not "jacking up three's" nearly as much as prior years, and it's noticeable to me.  2) using the percentages to say seven guys have better percentages isn't entirely accurate. A couple of those of those guys have attempted 2 and 4 threes on the year. One is Reggie, the other is McKinely.  3)  I know no one is screaming about this, but I don't think it's fair to refer to DJ jacking up three's when it comes to this specific season.  He's selecting shots better this year and I feel like it shows.

This may be a dumb question...why do they call assists dimes?

I thought it was 'cause a pay phone call cost a dime at the time the expression happened...so you were 'hooking a guy up' by giving him a dime for a call or by assisting him for a hoop.

There has been some debate - and your reference is close to the more popular alternate interpretation that posits a dime given for the pay phone to call the police - to bust somebody. I think that unlikely as the source as it is has a more "negative" connotation per the outcome (unless you are the police). In fact, one Mr. Kellog used the term notoriously early in his broadcasting career ( as in "drop a dime"). I think the evidence much more likely indicates the "charitable" intention of purpose for the origination of the term (Google Rockefeller - handing out dimes). But someone could ask Mr. Kellog what he thinks next time you see him on the Convo - though I think like a lot of cultural phraseology it has evolved over the years.

I agree.  He still throws up a few of those no no no no 3 pointers, but not nearly as many.

Needs to be more engaged than he was tonight.  8 pts, 3 assists and 4 turnovers is probably one of his lesser career showings!

with 10 games to go, he needs to average under 8 per game, doesn't seem too iffy.

He has 1923 points (according to stats from ESPN), so he needs 77 with seven regular season and at least one MAC tourney game (and maybe other tourney games) left.  To get it done in the regular season, he'd have to average 11 pts a game, more than 2 pts under his season average (13.7) and more than a pt under his MAC average (12.7).  It's concerning, tho, that he's scored only 23 pts in his last three games, a 7.7 average.

I'm a team guy but should this happen, this is truly a remarkable accomplishment.  On a NATIONAL level, this university needs to be promoting this big time.  With all of the well placed Sports Ad folks around America, someone in the athletic department needs to kick this into high gear.

I know quite a few of these folks so I'll be placing some calls in the next few days.  i know there are other posters and lurkers who are also well connected.  Start making the calls guys.  Your university and this kid deserves it.

If he's got 885 assists, he should be 15th by himself.

see correction above - Akron could be fun - though both the assists and rebounds are projected at the beginning of the game.  If he goes above his average (7.7 assist/3.2 rebounds either of the next two games, he breaks through at Bracket Buster.

Why does the DJ Cooper file on the Athletic web site say first to have 500 Rebounds to go with the rest of his accomplishments, when he already has 590 some?  Heard that mentioned on TV games and such.  Shorting him by 100.

its a minimum plateau for each bench mark number, by going so far over it just amplifies the accomplishment.

Three of us are heading down to Nashville tonight. (We live in Clarksville)
Thank you to those explaining the DIME thing!
We were trying to figure out signs for tonight, if they're allowed, and just in general, ideas for signs.  If only I had the time to get a dime printed!
My son is excited to know we should see DJ break 900. He's not a player, but has enjoyed the last two years of OU basketball along with the rest of us. He knows this is a huge thing. And we get to see it! (if all goes well!)
