HOW DOES 5 BECOME 1?
No player in the history of college basketball has ever recorded 2,000 points, 900 assists, 650 rebounds and 300 steals for a career. One current Bobcat has a chance to accomplish this feat.

In the history of college basketball, only 12 players have ever recorded 900 assists.

Two players on the 900 assists list have surpassed 2,000 points. Those names are Sherman Douglas and Gary Payton. Of those two, only Payton had more than 300 steals. However, no one has ever reached 650 rebounds, until possibly this season.

Actually, no player has ever reached 900 assists, 2,000 points, 300 steals, and 600 rebounds (or even 500 rebounds)

Sherman Douglas
www.orangehoops.org/SDouglas.htm
960 assists, 2,060 points, 235 steals, and 310 rebounds

Gary Payton
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/gary-payton-1.html
938 assists, 2,172 points, 321 steals, and 480 rebounds

DJ Cooper - as of today
824 assists, 1830 points, 288 steals, and 564 rebounds

15 regular season games remaining - he is averaging for the season:
8.2 assists, 14.7 points, 1.8 steals, 3.2 rebounds

projects to:
947 assists, 2050 points, 315 steals, 612 rebounds

So he should stand alone.

When he hits those marks, our media relations staff really needs to be pestering bugs in the ears at ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, etc.

Does anybody know if DJ's NCAA tournament stats are figured into his career totals?  I assume they are, but know that sometimes numbers compiled in postseasons are separated.

In case you're curious, here's what he's compiled in five NCAA tournament games (is that an OHIO record, obviously shared with this entire senior crew?):

89 points, 32 assists, 18 rebounds, 9 assists

I just couldn't believe that 9 assist stat and checked the boxscores from DJs 5 NCAA games.  Looks like 31 assists although I looked quickly.

Whoops, sorry, just re-read and and realized that "9 assists" cited above must be steals not assists.

Ok, looking closer I have DJ with 89 pts, 31 assists, 19 rebounds, 9 steals.  Thanks FinnOhio for pointing out DJ's tourney numbers.  I wonder how his averages of 17.8 pts, 6.2 assists, 3.8 boards and 1.8 steals in the Big Dance stack up against others with at least a handful of games played.

Sorry, meant 9 steals, not assists.  I'd love to see him (far) eclipse the 100 point total in the tourney.  That would be pretty awesome.

They should try to get in their ears now, so the press pumps out a mention every time he climbs.  I don't know that the media would listen, but it is worth a shot.

With 8 tonight against NIU he moves up to 832 and #23.  He's two away from passing Pooh Richardson and Chris Thomas and 21st place.

Fun fact: NIU had 5 assists AS A TEAM, THE ENTIRE GAME. This year, Coop has 8 more assists than the Huskies overall

I will gladly contribute money for some sign making.  I am thinking over sized dimes with DJs face and the logo, "In Coop We Trust."  Can we do this before the next home game?  Anyone able to help?

I think DJ might be counting assists too.  I only got to watch the second half of the Miami game tonight but there were a few instances that, in my expert (i.e. never played the game) opinion, he forced passes to try to create assists.

True, we were ahead double digits, but Miami started making me nervous around 4 minutes remaining.  Thankfully they can't make uncontested layups.

What three players would you add to this team? Coach?

PG - Coop
G - Esterkamp
G - Mychal Green
F - Hunter
F - Trent

Coach - Would it really matter?

Not a lot prolly - but Graham before Green, Troutman (or Simmons) before Esterkamp.

Troutman... you mean the guy who dribbled the ball straight out of bounds when we had a chance to knock off Florida in the round of 64 in 2005?

A great career perhaps, but that's all I remember of him.

Well there were a few other historic fails in that game too (Fears breakaway dunk fail in particular). If that's all you remember then you missed a lot of hustle and hard play.

I would be perfectly happy w/any team that starts w/Sonny then pick the other top four to fill the starting five! Sonny was Great moving w/o the ball, and a slasher (and would have been great for DJ). Good defender as well, and quick to push the ball up the court on TO's.
