Seems like there aren't many Akron fans there.  Maybe they're already on the Turnpike heading home.

I hate Akron's mismatched shoes.

Among other things.

Rafferty called them Crossing Guard Shoes. I loved that.

VCU is playing a different brand of ball.

Leading to the obvious question:  why don't we try that at times.  Analogy:  Oregon football offense.

It's unacceptable when teams gain an edge merely by out-thinking, by taking a different approach.  One which is obvious, out there for the taking, has been around for decades and decades.

First response will be that we don't have the same athletes that VCU does.  But we can at least try some of this.  Very apt are the comments about why we didn't do this vs. 'kron in the title game.  What weren't we thinking?

GraffZ06 and Borna--you're right on target.  For as smart and fundamentally sound as Nick appears, he and Reggie were most often burnt on D vs. Denver.  And yes, Nick had multiple career highs placed on him.  I credit Nick for attempting to add another dimension to his game this year by putting the ball on the floor more, but in a game such as VCU (more athletic teams) he's just not going to get it done.  And this is coming from a guy who will tell you Nick is their favorite Bobcat--me!

I really think OHIO needs a more athletic, versatile #2 SG with Nick/Travis as the designated zone busters--especially if we don't develop an inside game that requires teams to sag/help.  This year we were a perimeter team and when teams started to guard the 3 point line consistently, that pretty much took Nick out of the game.

Unless WInfield develops into this type of player (and I've never seen him play a minute) I don't see anyone on the current roster who's going to step into being an effective scorer/slasher/distributor like we'd like to have at the #2 position.

If this were a Prize Fight they would stop it.

C/mon Shaka call off the dogs. It's starting to be classless.

Per MAC people on twitter, largest MAC tournament loss is 32 points by Ball State in 1986 (Memphis 95, Ball State 63 - in Baton Rouge)

We're at 42 right now.

I don't have a problem with pressing still, it's the damn NCAA Tournament.

I truly do not think those kids know how to play any other way. He has played 12 deep. How do you back them off and not lose the edge for the next game? I want my kids to play every possession as if it were the last they ever play. I want them to execute my system each and every possession and strive for the perfect game. Calling it off in this system sends a bad message to the team. IMHO

More fun stats... from ESPN

The record for largest margin by a 5-seed over a 12-seed is 35 points.

+1
I've always been of the opinion that if a game gets out of hand, put in your backups, your walkons, whatever, but those guys that are out there had damned sure better be giving it their all/sticking to the system. If that brings the point differential to a ridiculous level...well, that's on the team that is down. If they don't like it, they should play better and put a stop to it.

Thinking the same thing. What Ohio has done for the MAC's visibility over the last 3 years, the Zips are undoing those 3 years in LESS than 40 minutes.

Have some pride Akron... WOW

You're playing for a national championship. There's no such thing as running up the score. You don't tell your team not to do what they'd done all season because your opponent can't handle it.

I said Akron might lose this by 40.

I hate it when I'm such an optimist. I meant 50, I swear.

Obviously, MAC recruiting over the last ten years has really fallen off.  I would say most MAC teams are lucky to get a "stud" every other year.  That probably gives them three guys who can compete.  Then, all you have to play with is guys that ONLY other MAC teams or MAC level teams also recruited.  Unless and until the MAC starts getting more and better athletes they are destined to be the 15-20th league in the country.  You just MUST get ONE real "stud" minimum each year and then get those guys everyone else in the conference is recruiting.

Looks like Christian got one "stud" in Ndour this year (Big East offers as I recall).  I think the rest of the recruits (as I recall) were basically recruited only by MAC or MAC level schools.

I was looking up that fact on the MAC site. As expected, dating back every 40 years, the MAC doesn't get blown often.

Akron now has a point guard in jail and, likely, the worst loss in MAC NCAA history. Great job Zippy!
