I'm not a follower of the NBA and have never watched thei draft before last night but I was surprised at the drop off from Round 1 to Round 2. Even the announcers acted like R2 is for scrubs, they seemed very disinterested and at times nearly disrespectful.

There were several players with less impressive resumes than DJ that were drafted, I guess if you're tall and not very good you're a "project" but if you're short and have room for improvement you're just out of luck.

It's not always the best 60 players available getting drafted. Teams not wanting to tie up roster spots will frequently draft foreign players that they can "stash" overseas for a few years, holding their NBA rights without having to use a spot on their 15-man roster. Some of those players end up coming into the league a few years later, others you never hear from again. This is especially common in round 2.

If it was purely the top 60 players available being drafted, I'm pretty sure Coop and/or Zeke get picked.

All games are NBA TV: 216 on DirecTV, 402 on DISH. Other carriers may have various numbers depending on where you are, but it is not an uncommon channel to have although many don't know they have it.

Does this make sense?  Can a U.S. player be stashed overseas, also?  Wouldn't a team draft players which it feels are most likely to help the team?

Monroe - Only foreign players can be "stashed" overseas.  Unless, a US born player has already signed a contract with a foreign team, then maybe.  Not sure on the legalities of that.

The reason to draft and stash is that player's contract or cap hold for the draft slot does not count against the current salary cap.  So, you can retain the rights to someone and not use cap space.  Sometimes, the best way to help your team is to not cut a veteran for the cap hold on a rookie not good enough to contribute to your team.  Plus, you retain the rights to a young player while they mature and someone else pays them.

I've lost track of who owns his rights at this point, maybe Minnesota, but Nick Calathes was drafted out of Florida and "stashed" overseas. Likewise, Kyle Singler went over for a year due to the lockout and the Pistons retained his rights. Both were 2nd round picks though, so their money wasn't guaranteed. But, were a team to draft Shawn James, who is one of the leading American scorers in Euroleague, I believe they could own his rights until his contract in Tel Aviv expired and he was eligible to come play here.

Philly also has rookie point guards Pierre Jackson and Nate Wolters. It's clear they want a young point guard or two, but I'm not sure the Sixers provide a favorable situation for DJ.

Right, teams can maintain the rights to drafted players for a couple of years. Jon Dielber has played overseas the last two years. He was drafted by the Blazers. After one year, his rights were traded to the Rockets. This year, he will be in camp with the Rockets. If Houston opts not to put him on the roster, he will become an NBA free agent.

I'm not really sure how different this is for international players, or if it is at all.

Jackson was in the Noel/Holliday deal and Wolters was traded the second he was drafted so DJ and MCW are the only PG's for the our (Big Sixers fan) summer team.

Looks like Royce White will be moved to Philly. Perhaps DJ can be the full time back-up PG on the road.

DJ got a solid amount of run in his first summer league game. He finished with six points on 2-5 shooting, one rebound, one assist, one steal, one turnover, and five fouls.

Zeke Marshall kept his warmup on.

Ha about Zeke. Good for DJ though. Seems they're actually interested in looking at what he can do then

DJ's shot is looking pretty good.  Quicker release and more straight up and down than he used to be.

Hopefully he does a little better job running the show. He seemed to give the ball up a little early a few times.

Solid on defense though. He stayed in front of his man and played some solid help d, including stopping a dunk on a free run to the hoop by Jack Cooley.

Overall,  I'd give him a B. Better the 'DNP - CD' that Zeke got.

I tuned in about half way through the 3rd, Cooper has definitely put on some weight. With Carter-Williams running the point looked like Coop played the 2 guard most of the time. D looked good, good hustle. 13 player roster and 11 played, not a good sign for Zeke.

She's far more representative of an athlete's parents than an anomaly, I'm afraid. Our own resident athlete parent is far too rare.

How the author wrote in 1st person had me believe it was not mama.  Wording like I should know I am trying to live it or I learned it in my sports management class.  It could be mama.  I don't know and I have already put way to much effort into it.

I need to be more concerned with the future of our program.  It is a waste of time to even think about former players from other programs.  I won't lose a wink of sleep if I never hear the name Zeke Marshall again.

Cooper was 2 of 5 overall, including 2 of 4 on 3-pointers, in his first Summer League game. He had one rebound, one assists, one steal, one turnover and five fouls in less than 15 minutes.

He's not gonna make a team playing off the ball anyhow. I think he'll get a better look in the Vegas league, where Carter-Williams doesn't have a usage rate of 87%.

One thing you have to keep in mind about the NBA summer league. They need bodies to play the games. Getting an invite to play, while better than a sharp stick in the eye, still makes you a extreme long shot to make a roster. Earl Boykins comes to mind in a situation like this. He wasn't drafted, but he showed them something and kicked around the league for a long time, putting up some impressive numbers in many of his years. Maybe DJ can raise some eyebrows.
