Looks like the people who wrote the letters are not the only up tight people at Ohio basketball games....

JSF - I have a request.  I want you to tell your wife "you suck" and say it like you mean it!  I want you to tell your mother "you suck" with meaning!  or your father for that matter.  Better yet, go see your boss, especially when you disagree, and tell him/her "you suck" like you mean it!  Then let me know the results that you get with this little experiment.

Because that is very much the same as a student section saying it during a rowdy basketball game.

I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone complain about the occasional Convo chants of "bullsh#t" after questionable calls, this has always seemed vulgar to me in a family environment while the "sucks" is rather tame IMHO.

And when vulgar meets creativity, does that merit different criticism?  I have to say, although vulgar, I chuckled with my teenage son at the Valpo game when the Ozone (or 110?) added Alec Peters' last name to the "You Suck" chant.

That is an insult and it's not a matter of word choice but intent. Different matter. And the above post is correct: Your disapproval should be directed to the BS chant.

First of all, you are comparing apples to oranges. Now, if he said to his wife "Wow, the Miami Redhawks really suck!" I'm sure she wouldn't mind a bit. Just today my boss asked if I was worried about the weather since I'm driving to Ohio tomorrow. I said "Yea, it's going to suck but I think it'll be ok." I had no problem with using that word and he had no problem hearing it.

I sense that some here are being hypocritical. We regularly refer to BGSU as BGSUcks on this forum. Several people calle OSU OSUcks. We have an entire thread devoted to the fact that Miami does indeed suck. In fact, people often report on the sucking feeling they encounter when they get closer to Oxford. How is this any different from what the students do?

I actually think that people are being purposefully silly because I can't fathom how anyone cannot understand that the context of words is important.

JSF - I already had it figured you would find a way to side step the issue. Not real sure why my request was an insult? I do find the Bull**** and all the other questionable chants/cheers out of line.  Yes it is a matter of how you intend the saying of you suck or whatever other saying in question.  I believe that you think just because it's a BB game it's OK.  Or if out with the guys it's OK.  Maybe your grandma, that you said would be offended, knows best.  I believe it is totally unnecessary and that the o-zone, band and any other fan for that matter can make lots of noise asnd support for our team w/o the use of any of those cheers.

I know my wife, mother, boss, etc. would have never condoned me saying those things and I therefore wouldn't say it anytime, even at a BB game.  Heck, I was a teacher!  Can you imagine me telling a student "you suck"!  I am sure I wouldn't have lasted long in the profession.  How many parents would have taken that issue to the bank?

I cannot believe how much we ridicule OSU and their fan base for the things they do and then rationalize because they do it, it is OK for us to do (ie: comments in this thread about the cheers that OSU, Duke, etc. use)  I am "not" an OSU fan by the way!  Seems to me that we speak out one side of the mouth until we want to do the same, then we speak out the other side of our mouths.

PS - Please tell me how I insulted you!

You said it Delbobcat!  It does have a different ring depending on how you say it.  Tell me the ring at the game is the same as you described above?  Saying something sucks (as you described BGSUcks) on a message board is a lot different  than saying "you suck" to an individual or team when they are present with you and it is directed to them.  That was part of my point with JSF.  It is not always OK to use that term, but JSF justifies it as common, respected language of "young" people today and is acceptable to use anytime, any place.  I disagree!

Of course you would deserve to be fired if you seriously told a student they suck. You would also deserve to be fired if you told them they were stupid or ugly--yet "stupid" and "ugly" are not considered bad words and no one would mind if the Ozone called our opponents ugly. Your point doesn't even really make sense. Context does matter and everyone speaks differently based on the situation they are in.

My grandma would have a big problem if I told her she sucked, but if she came to a basketball game with me and I yelled at the ref that his call sucks she wouldn't even think twice. Why? Because she's a smart woman who understands context and isn't looking for something to be offended about.

I see no difference if you are yelling at your opponent. Now, if Stevie turned the ball over and we started yelling that he sucks that would be a different story. But yelling that your opponent sucks is the same as saying "you're bad at basketball" which is not offensive at all.

There was a time when showing up at the dinner table in your own house without a tie was considered uncouth and vulgar.  Playing cards on Sunday used to be considered uncouth and vulgar.  Using the word "sucks" used to be considered uncouth and vulgar.  Emily Post ain't walking through that door, people.

Two semi coherent and tangentially related thoughts come to mind as I read the most recent posts in this thread:

1.  I wonder if the expression "you suck" might be a corruption of the old expression "to suck hind tit," which meant to be in an inferior position.

2.  We had an expression when I first started college that I'd like to revive.  The expression was "take it in the ear"  It was used to describe poor performance, such as, I had my math test today and I really "took it in the ear."   Some of old farts would find it very funny if the O Zone would yell at the refs after a bad call -- "Take it in the ear!"

I just did a web search found out that Dec. 8 is National Take it in the Ear Day.  Note the webmasters of this site are too young to understand the meaning of this archaic expression.

I'm confused; are you saying it's okay to talk disrespectful about someone as long as it's behind their back?  When we say Miami Sucks*, we are saying that everything that represents the football team sucks.  That trickles down to every individual, does it not?  I could be misunderstanding your post, but that's just the impression I get.

(*Miami Sucks is a proper term around here, therefore justifiable to capitalize.)

Is "suck" my favorite choice of word?  Not at all, but it pales in comparison to other things I've heard from various student sections and adult fan bases.  I've taken my 6-year-old niece to college basketball and football games.  I like to think of those venues as "kid-friendly" environments but can handle an occasional discussion with her when she asks me "what is that word they are saying".  A brief explanation that it was an inappropriate adult word, never to say that in school or in front of mom or dad, followed by a way to easily distract her and move on to something else usually does the trick.

I want the student section to be loud, involved and show up in good numbers.  I realize I won't agree with every thing that is said and if something is said that offends me, I can tolerate it enough to let it slide.  Be creative, be loud and support the team.  I'm much more offended by a student wearing an OSU shirt to an OU game than an occasional "you suck" chant.

Now let's keep the momentum going and beat Mercer tonight.

This whole thread is bizzaro land. Saying "____ sucks" at a sporting event is basically as tame as what you would hear at a middle school game from students. If you are offended by hearing "you suck", dont turn on a television or go on any other message board on the internet except this because your ears will be burning. Any truth to the O zone adding this to their cheering playbook??? www.youtube.com/watch

When you've played athletics, having someone say that you suck just bounces off you and you're amused by it. If you really sucked on a play or a game, you know it and try to get better. So if anyone thinks that is hurting someones feelings, they are mistaken.

The flip side of that is we can and should be more creative when is comes to our insults.

Let's just agree to differ.  Along with a few others, I find it offensive.  Others are okay with it.

Beyond that, it's difficult to believe that there's not some combo of words, some phrase that can replace the alleged vulgarity.  Something original that will mark us as unique.  Something that all sides can agree is excellent.

That alternative is the real point.

Bonus question:  what words were said that got Dragon, Bobcat thrown out?

Roar-room - I'm not an OSU fan.  Pretty simple what that means.  In my statement above I didn't want anyone to think that I was as it would have misrepresented my point.

LoganElm - I'm trying to get across the same point as many others.  There are different ways to say you suck and it will come off differently.  Somehow most who feel this is true have failed to see that the way it comes across at the BB games is exactly the connotation that they say is a poor use of the term.

I realize and knew when I first posted this would probably be a losing battle from my end.  Most everyone here is justifying their own means.  It reminds of an incident I dealt with in education.  I had a young man who drove a pickup truck to school.  He liked to enter and leave school at too high of a rate of speed (5mph limit).  After much discussion and warnings I had to take disciplinary action for the safety of everyone else.  Keep in mind that our school was K-12 so we had kindergarteners walking across a cross walk.  After handing out the discipline the student gets on his phone to his dad who was in my office within 10 minutes.  I explained everything to the dad who proceeded to tell me his son's truck couldn't go any slower because of mechanical reasons of some kind.  I told him I didn't buy that excuse.  He came across my desk and I honestly thought he would punch me.  I never flinched.  The discipline stood and both the dad and son were thorns in my side until he graduated.  Driving down the road I even got flipped off to as Dad went the other direction.  The real question is: Had his son hit someone and hurt or killed them, who's fault would it had been.  Mine!  They would have somehow twisted the situation around that I didn't properly supervise the situation at hand.  That's what has happened here!  At BB games it's OK to yell certain things that the whole arena hears and maybe even the home audience over the TV hears.  But to say it in the same way in other situations isn't OK.  I find a problem with the line of thinking.

I am done wasting my time writing on this subject and am therefore not posting again on the topic.  I read many posts before I posted and truly believe there are more than you think that would support my line of thinking.  I am a season ticket holder for FB because I generally don't hear this stuff at FB games.  I do not buy season tickets for BB because of what I have to hear.  I just don't get it!  I'd rather stay home and watch online, etc.  By the way I usually sit amongst the o-zone for FB games and frequently bring guests as young as 2 yrs. old.  The last few times I've been in the convo with these same guests I've questioned paying $20/ticket (as much as over $200 for 1 game) for that experience.  Can't I just come and enjoy the game?  Please don't tell me it is my choice to not come as I would like to come, but don't get that warm/fuzzy about the experience anymore and more importantly the experience of the young people I bring.  You also must know that I am a die hard BB fan, by far more than any other sport.  That should tell you something!

So long and may your "you suck" statements (and all other questionable ones) be fruitful for the benefit of Ohio University.  I don't believe they will.

I happen to think when a call is, in fact, a BS call then it should be stated as such.  It is also okay to tell your kids they that they should not say BS even though the 110 and the O-Zone did and that one old guy who just leaned over and told his wife "that was a BS call" .

Like others before me related even if we banned the word "sucks" from the O-Zone, Miami would still suck.

I'm tempted to make the drive down so you are not disappointed.

In all seriousness, I am glad you admit to your thinking that a theatrical performance should have a similar crowd to a sporting event.

When I am on the Tower Side in Peden, I swear those people think they are at a Broadway show.

I am of the firm belief that the goal of fans is to give their teams the biggest advantage possible.  Part of that is heckling the hell out of the opposing team.  The idea that fans and in particular students have to be classy is totally crazy.  I think fans have to be intense and sometimes walk the fine line. In college and High school there should be some obvious limitations on the side of "Older" fans, but students shouldn't hold back.  Obviously I think some topics should be avoided, but to act like we should be at a country club is nuts.  If you get offended by a few very harmless chants....then I guess you avoid going to public places in general?  Avoid watching PG movies?  Live in a bubble?  Be home schooled?  Have 0 social life?
