JSF - That just may be it.  I wouldn't call it for my enjoyment though!  I would probably say it would be for my enjoyment in not having to defend and make excuses for my university to all my many "friends" and acquaintances.  I feel I should be able to bring people to games, which I believe benefits the university, without, having to defend it all the time.  Every little incident that makes the paper, I have to defend or just suck it up and keep my mouth shut and take the punishment.  I have a pride in the university that most can't match.  I really believe that!  I just hate when when I have to swallow hard and take the criticism!

Well said my man.  This reminds me of a story from my junior year at Muskingum.  A friend was on the Pop Concert committee and the band Orleans was going to be doing a show in John Glenn Gymnasium.  He asked a couple of us to serve as part of their "road crew" and actually gave us yellow shirts that said Orleans on the front and Road Crew on the back.  After we had everything set up and were heading back for a little pre-school party at the fraternity house, we were talking about how F - in this and F - in that the show was going to be, words that I don't remember using that often back then but which for some reason were spewing from my mouth quite often that evening.  As we rounded the corner of a building we literally ran into my all-time favorite professor, a woman I respected so much that I took every history class that she taught.  She had clearly heard our loud conversation as we rounded the corner and she simply looked me in the eye as we passed her and said, "Road crew, really?"  That was 37 years ago and I clearly remember the effect that had on my behavior and language usage going forward.

I think a parallel can be drawn between that incident and what some are saying on this board.  "Ozone, really?"

+1 to both Alan and Lande71

Also, I haven't heard any of the apologists coming back and defending in the "high school" cheer against the Berg.

Anyone see the Northern Iowa fans comments about our online fans? Very positive - they couldn't have been more
complementary. Miami Sucks should be an OHIO trademark at this point. What's the issue here. OSU fans are some of the worst in the country. Have you seen some of their postings about Michigan?  No, their fans are saints! And the beat goes on.

I don't worry about OSU fans.  I don't want to be compared to them in the least!

I'm going to put this in about the plainest way I can:

If we wanted to roll out to every game and chant "F- you" after every foul, we could. Look at Syracuse, where that is common, or Duke, where much worse is said. We don't, and I don't understand what everyone's problem is with having a standard response that 1.) everyone knows, and 2.) is tamer than any other two word combination that could be put there. We're gonna do what we're gonna do, and you guys are going to do what you're going to do. Are we having an internal conversation over new chants and traditions to try and start? Yes. Will there be some changes before the end of the season? Yes.

Let's focus on who we're playing and not about the fans. I love you guys, but the situation is more complex than it should be, honestly, and there's some stuff that I cannot comment on that ties in to what and how we do it.

Finally, The "High School Team" chant was not started by the actual O Zone, it was started by the band.

EDIT: After re-reading this, I realize I may have come across as disrespectful, which is not what I intended to do. I only hope to convey my frustration not with you, but with the culture that surrounds the O Zone as of late.

Younger people don't think saying "suck" is a big deal. Older people do. It's a generational thing.

Are the low standards of others what we want to compare ourselves to?

The comment that 'you suck' is quick and easy shorthand--yes it is.  And it shows no imagination at all.

The really poignant, memorable putdowns are smart, pithy.  It's not easy but it can be done--without the profanity or semi-profantiy.

If you don't think that 'you suck' is in bad taste, then you need to mature up.  It ain't about generational; it's about smarts and respect.

You want memorable--Think of that vid of that portly guy at UteState doing 'I'm a little teacup' during the oppo's free throws.  That is poignant, pithy, witty.

Any mo-ron can go profane.  It takes smarts to cut sharp clean.

The idea that everything said by a student section must be clever and original is ridiculous. "Suck" is not vulgar these days. I'm sorry if you think it is, but you're on the wrong side of the word's evolution on that one.

Answer this:  If we didn't do such as "you suck" would we be better or worse?

Neither. The amount of hand wringing over this is excessive. It's not going away, especially when the only suggestion for replacing it is, "Be more creative," which couldn't be less helpful.

Please, with your experience in the O Zone, give the better suggestion(s).

I don't feel the need because I have no problem with "sucks." I probably said it 10,000 times. I still say it.

I don't care about it's use either.  I suggested that because in your O Zone years, there was in fact a bit more cleverness and thought put into chants and signs, in my opinion.

Incorrect.

It's true that not everything can be clever (duh) but vulgar is vulgar.

I'm curious--what does wifey think of 'sucks'?

At work and other places at which you might want to impress people, do you use such words?  (Don't suggest that the places are different; class is class, character is character.)

From Dear Abby from years ago...equally applicable to crudeness such as 'sucks'

10 REASONS FOR SWEARING

1. It pleases Mother so much.

2. It's a fine mark of manliness.

3. It proves that I have self-control.

4. It indicates how clearly my mind operates.

5. It makes my conversation so pleasing to everybody.

6. It leaves no doubt in anyone's mind as to my good breeding.

7. It impresses people that I have more than an ordinary education.

8. It's an unmistakable sign of culture and refinement.

9. It makes me desirable personally among women and children in respectable society.

10. It's my way of honoring God, who said, "Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain."

p.s.  i swear way too often..not proud of that....but not very often in public places

I'd be supremely surprised if you construct your business communication in the same fashion you construct your BA posts, caps lock and all.

Yes. Aside from my grandmother, nobody cares. I say it at work in front of and to children (but NOT directed at them). It's never been an issue.

JSF - I have a request.  I want you to tell your wife "you suck" and say it like you mean it!  I want you to tell your mother "you suck" with meaning!  or your father for that matter.  Better yet, go see your boss, especially when you disagree, and tell him/her "you suck" like you mean it!  Then let me know the results that you get with this little experiment.
