Long time reader, first time poster. I can't believe these two complaints are even real, this behavior goes on at venues all across the country. Sounds as if they had a sheltered life.

Glad to see you out of the shadows. Dexter. DOn't be a stranger

I'm not the least bit offended by the Ozone's "you suck" on a foul, but it's really lame. It's more embarrassing than offensive.
Agreed. I never understood why there was anything tacked on to the end of the foul thing.

I don't mind the "you suck" on a foul out though.

If she went to 30 OSU games any time before the past couple of seasons, it was akin to attending 30 funerals because they basically placed the student section in Dayton (as mentioned by someone else, when it opened the students were an afterthought since they had sold their soul to alumni to build it)

I think we should have their letters blown up and put up in the Convo as confirmation of the effectiveness of our student section.

Ozone, these are gifts from the student section gods.  Have a ball with them.

Reprint and poke fun in the next edition of the paper being printed for the O Zone to crumple up.

I don't care about the low standards of other schools.

Answer this:  If we didn't do such as "you suck" would we be better or worse?

We'd be better as a fan base.  The team would be the same!

Neither. The amount of hand wringing over this is excessive. It's not going away, especially when the only suggestion for replacing it is, "Be more creative," which couldn't be less helpful.

These two have definitely over-reacted to the Ozones chants.  Rightly or wrongly, the common level of dissing now includes a certain level of vulgarity and under the right circumstances, a particularly bad, bad, ref call for example, is needed to express in the briefest of terms how the crowd feels about it.  Sometimes there is no substitute for "You Suck!"

On the other hand, the Ozone (and Band) need to have some level of self-respect.  I was actually offended by the chant "High School Team"  near the end of the Heidelberg game Saturday.  For a D2 school they did well.  I expect they will do good things in thier own league.  I also expected nothing less than the games outcome.  They were guests at the Convo,  They knew as well as we did what the most likely outcome would be.  WHAT WAS THE POINT??  There was no great affront given nor surprise victory.  The chant was just mean.    I doubt anyone would have felt like doing that chant during the first 12 minutes of the game.  OZONE save that chant for when we trash Akron.

The chant of "Buckwheat" by the band members was much more offensive to me and those who sit near me.

Why? The guy looked like Buckwheat. Just like the guy from Portland looked like Ron Weasley. Just like the guy from Marshall years back looked like Powder.

I agree that chant was in very bad taste.  I'm not a great fan of "You suck" either, but this was much worse.  Some possible substitutes for the latter, depending on circumstances, might include:

1. A really bad call against us when we play Miami (works for other schools, too): "What year did you graduate from Miami?" To be effective this has to be yelled right at the ref who made the bad call.

2.  A general bad call chant: "You're blind, you're blind . . . you must be out of your mind!"

3.  And, here's one I used to hear more: "Three blind mice!"

Finally, here's a thread I stumbled upon on an NHL fanboard where several posters conclude that "You Suck" just makes the refs more likely to give you the shaft again . . . presumably on a subconscious level, of course.  To me at least, cheers #2 and #3 above are more humorous and less likely to bommerang in this manner.

Our society has become a collective in seeing who can be offended the most.  Stop looking for ways to be offended. Is the "You Suck!" chant creative? No. Is it offensive? Only if you are dying to be offended.  The world is not going back to saying things like "swell" or "neat".  Time to catch up and get over it.   I'm all for looking for new and better chants by the Ozone but the "offended" parties in this thread are saying the same kinds of things that they rolled their eyes at when their parents said them 40 (or 50 or 30 or 10) years ago.

I don't feel the need because I have no problem with "sucks." I probably said it 10,000 times. I still say it.

Canadiens don't know how to be mean. Odds are they apologized to the refs after saying these.

At risk of being completely counter-productive: These suggestions suck.

Oh Yeah!  In the other thread there is talk about how tough Mercer will be to beat!  Five senior starters, great team, beat Tennessee at Tennessee, blah, blah, blah.  I think a few "you suck" cheers are in order or "high school team" cheers.  We get into a huge discussion about whether it's right or not?  Come on, we gave the likes of the Hipsher boys that stuff and it usually cost us the game.  I know that I would have fed off that stuff when I played and tried my best to stick it back in your collective mouths.  Everybody thinks that does our team a favor.  Somebody mentioned the ref chants usually mean a few more calls going against you.  I tend to agree.  It is rare that those chants, to even the opposing team members, accomplish anything good for our side.  Five seniors starting have heard that crap for 4 or 5 yrs. now.  Do we honestly think this stuff will rattle their cages?  Probably not!!!!!  The only reason that kids like to say that stuff is for their own enjoyment.  Just think, in 6 months to 4 years from now they will have to act differently when in the job market.  Why not start now?  So, as you can see, I decided a rant on the subject was in order after reading the many posts.  I'm not for giving the other team an advantage in our house.  This coming from a former coach.  I'm not saying that the fans can't be spirited, just in a more proper manner.

Believe me roar-room!  I was also a hs principal and can attest first hand to the brains of kids.  I used to tell them to do that foolishness when they get to college, just not my college!  The guys would rip the other team members at VB and girl's BB games.  They didn't give one bit of crap, if you know what I mean, about whether we won the game or not.  I ruined their fun more times than I care to remember.  Same things went for the guy's games.  I once had a mother come and tell I was ruining her son's senior yr. as a fan!  I just don't buy into that!
