I could get 373 people off the street for a free basketball game of 7th and 8th graders. That is beyond embarassing for EMU.

The Vikings are going to be an interesting team to defend.  Nearly everybody they put on the floor can hit the three. To put it in perspective, their worst shooter from three has comparable numbers to Nick Kellogg.  They aren't very big though.  The line is pick em the last time I checked.

Edit: I just checked again and it's moved to Ohio -1.5

Here is an ironic headline.

"Eastern Michigan beats Norfolk State, 58-54 in CIT opener; players bemoan sparse attendance"

This is the final paragraph from story

"After the game, multiple Eastern Michigan players took to Twitter to comment on the game's sparse attendance of 373, according to the official box score. EMU averaged 901 fans in 19 home games this year."

What's funny (and sad at the same time) is that they complain about 373 showing up for an uninteresting (from the fan perspective) game vs a MEAC team from Virginia but apparently don't have a problem with averaging 901 during the regular season.  The NCAA has them at 930, which is 320th out of 351 D1 teams.

This sort of thing always makes me wonder why a basketball recruit would choose many MAC schools over Ohio. I realize crowd size/atmosphere is only one of several possible factors a recruit takes into account. But I have to scratch my head when a high school recruit picks a Miami or BG or EMU over Ohio. This also applies to some degree to football as well.

Completely agree.  Throw in the quality of the campus and facilities and I truly don't get it.  But hey, we are biased.

Im so confused as to how they decide the 2nd round opponents. Their website has like no info other than saying they use the "old NIT model" of selecting future round opponents. What does this mean? This seems bush league and open to manipulation by whoever runs this tournament

I'm guessing that all decisions are made by the selection committee. They attempt to pair geographically close teams every round, based on the history of this tournament. I'm not sure where I read this, but I also thought I read that home teams express interest to host, which I think would also be a factor in selection. Anyone else read that somewhere?

Their website just says that the old NIT model seeds each round based on the results of the previous round.  They probably take whatever criteria they used for the first round matchups and apply that to each succeeding round.  Facilities availability probably has something to do with it.  Lots of colleges (Ohio, for one) host high school tournament games this time of year.

I can understand an athlete preferring an urban setting v. rural/Appalachian setting. That's a matter of opinion. But playing in front of the O-Zone and 6,000 fans (sometimes over 10,000) v. playing in front of some of these pathetic crowds in other MAC arenas is a no-brainer.

Being around recruits a lot over the last 2 decades I really don't hear the urban/rural setting as a primary motivating factor. Coaches, facilities, education, campus feel are the top reasons for selecting a school. When visiting a campus most recruits get slapped inthe face that the next 4 years are going to be within the confines of their sport facility and on campus with very little time to venture off campus. . Campuses like Loyola, UIC, Detroit, St Johns, Georgia Tech are not as convenient and nice as some think while places like Auburn, Ohio, UGA, UVA are appealing to others for different reasons but create other problems with travel for families and being away from the conveniences of urban living. One of our New castle IN kids passed up a low D1 and a D2 ride to be at Roosevelt University in Downtown Chicago following one of our Muncie Central guys who loves being at Loyola. Both of them factored location into the equation more than most kids I know.

Talking to many of the Volley parents....they have a love affair going with Athens from the first visit. If you are going to send a female to college....at first sight this is very appealing.. Urban campuses like SLU, Marquette, UW-MIL, Detroit are described as being nightmarish to those parents.

This is a  very good Cleveland State team we are playing tonight.  Would be comparable to the better MAC teams this season.

It's hard to find weaknesses with this team.  They are just a good all around team.
  • Backup wing player Sebastian Douglas will be out for this game.  Having surgery.
  • They go 8-9 deep.
  • They are an excellent shooting team, including threes and at line.
  • Jon Harris, their sixth man, was a good player at Miami who gave us problems when he was there.  A lean forward who can shoot.
  • Gary Waters is one of my favorite coaches.  He was the head coach at Kent State when they made their improvements to become the best all around program in the MAC during those years.
  • Their defensive numbers are pretty good, too.
Doubt we'll see much zone tonight from Ohio.  But not sure how good CSU is with dribble penetration.

So, why would a first round matchup feature two of the top three or four teams in the tourney?  Seems dumb to me!

Oh, I forgot this is about buying home games.  Still a head scratcher matchup for round one.

From their metrics it doesn't look like they are great at it.  Their shooting numbers, both 2s and 3s indicate that they probably move the ball very well though.  I saw them play in December but wasn't really paying that close attention and have no real memory of the game.  If I had known then...

OT here, but..... The handle recalls my time as a member of the 110.  My 4 years at Ohio coincided with the first 4 years of the 110 (the Coach Gene Thrailkill years).  Way back then, as some will remember, "110" stood for "The 110 Marching Men of Ohio".  I do have stories about my time on campus - as does pretty much every Bobcat I've ever met regardless of era.

One of my best friends from high school went to Cleveland State instead of Ohio, so we really need to beat them so I can talk trash.

Of course, the biggest mystery of all: if I was a D-I recruit allowed five campus visits, one of them would have to be the University of Hawaii.

You don't need a W today to trash this circumstance.  It speaks for itself.

This ugly, disjointed game matches well with this island of misfit toys tournament. This seems like a waste of time tournament

We really took advantage of the size differential, but that didn't make him 9-10 from the line.  He has really developed this year.

Better second half and a good game. Liked the performance from the same guys that came on at the end. Good experience for the kids. Let's win some more.

I just made a lot of cash.  I'd bet that  1) we'd win this game with   2) Mo, Nick, Wilkins and Bean in low single figures and   3) Stevie with 13, Setty with 13, and Campbell with 21.

Russ said maybe a little more than 3000 after early in the game saying 2200. Would have thought better turnout given that students were away for Senior Day and only saw the Ball St. game since.

Worth noting: Mo was the only Bobcat with more than 2 fouls. We were +11 on FT attempts and +8 on makes. CSU as a team shot 75% on the season, so keeping them off the line was a great accomplishment.
