That really sucks. I can't imagine a kid under the age of 20 whose father played in the league being told he cannot play basketball anymore. I'm heartbroken for DJ.

I wonder if he would be interested in working with the team as a manager. I remember Ohio State's women's team had a high profile recruit, Brianna Sanders, a few years back. She never completely got over an ACL injury suffered in high school but stayed with the team as a manager.

Perhaps he qualifies for academic scholly…which would be grand.

Ohio University does not offer full academic scholarships for transfer students.

I had wanted to wait until something came out from the school, but JC did just mention on the postgame that they still "have others" to get, so i will tell you that it is two scholarships.  The doctors told DJ Wingfield that his knees are too arthritic for him to continue to play basketball.  He retains a scholarship at OU to continue forward as a student.  The team now gets an additional scholarship.  They will probably be looking at more of a shooter type to go with the PG they are looking for.  Sad, sad news for a good kid.

That is very sad news all around. Not only does he have to live his life with terrible knees, seeing his highlights he had a very promising basketball career in front of him.

I was very excited to see DJ Wingfield play next year.  Are they sure there is no chance?

Having two scholarships available might be a golden opportunity to solidify the point guard situation for 2015-2016. We can look for a D1 transfer and a freshman. Have both redshirt next year and BOOM - two point guards in different classes with a year of practice in our system.

That PG from Purdue will only transfer if one of his friends from Indiana goes with. I forget who it is. Let's go 2-for-1!

As a MAC coach, especially one who wants to hit the big year then hit the road for a bigger gig, you almost have to consider leave one scholarship open in hopes you land a home run type hitter.  Not sure this is JC mindset and if he wouldn't rather build it in a more conventional manner, but you gotta think many of the younger upward mobile guys are thinking this way.  You land an Bassett or Offutt type and add them to a very good nucleus, you can suddenly hit magic in a bottle.  I always felt JG had those connections and put a flyer in on some of these Big 6 type guys who need a new home, not sure if JC is as connected or attractive to these types of guys.

Of course the downside is high risk.  AB had issues, Anrio was a bust and your fan base may not appreciate the "win-at-all-cost" mentality, especially if you're inheriting other programs problem children.  But you almost want to consider keeping one scholly in your back pocket and play the PowerBall in hopes of landing a guy that could transform your program for a couple years.  Wonder if we have flyers on a couple of the guys on the transfer list hoping to get lucky?

I agree with most said it. It's unfortunate for Wingfield. It's hard to see that happen to a player but I'm glad it's been said that he gets to maintain some form of scholarship and hopefully he can even remain associated with the team.

As for the two scholarships, I think Ohio certainly will try to land someone to take at least one of those spots sooner rather than later. It won't hurt to hold on to one open slot for a while. It can be advantageous to have a scholarship available in the event that something comes up later and many schools might not have one to offer.

Question (and I think a fair one) that perhaps can best be answered by Borna:  Do incoming student-athletes have to pass a medical examination before receiving an athletic scholarship, or is simply a case of buyer beware?  I think we can speculate that this severe medical condition didn't spring up overnight…but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Very sad to has this. Injuries are the worst. For all the NCAA does wrong, I am glad they allow injured athletes to stay on scholarship.

I am very confident one scholarship will be a pg (hs sr, juco or transfer) and I am also very confident we end up using both scholarships before next year starts. We may hold out until late in the game to actually fill it (very possibly to get in the transfer game), but I guarantee we do fill it before it is all said and done. JC and staff will have backup plans contingent on if they can get guy #1 or #2 and so on on their list. No excuses for a program of this size not finding (and signing) a player at all. If we can't find anyone, we didnt look hard enough. At the very least, take a flyer on a kid who will be an extra body in practice. (we haven't been playing 5v5 for months....)

There are still a ton of names out there for 2014 that haven't signed anywhere, at least according to the recruiting grid on this site. It would be a nice summer surprise to read on Twitter that Ohio has signed someone late.

I heard JC mention that "others to get" comment a few times, hopefully DJ can get through this.  Can't be easy.

I've been wondering who our 3-pt shooters will be next year with Nick and Travis gone.  Bean leads the returners with 38% and N'dour is second at 33% but he doesn't shoot a lot.  Stevie was under 30% this year, in part because of the injury.  With Wingfield apparently unavailable, that leaves Khari Harley as the only unknown from this year's roster.  I'm not sure what he's like from 3.  Kendall Crute would seem to be the one among recruits.

Crute is money from 3. He has had his own struggles with health although his are of quite a different nature from DJ's.

Would be a good one year solution at the off guard position.

The overuse of band aids will eventually lead to losing an arm.

He has already been in school for 4 years so my guess is that he will receive his degree.  If he wants to get an advanced degree in an area that his current school does not offer, he is immediately eligible to transfer to a school that does.

Solves PG Need via 4 year transfer.  Plus, likely granted immediate play.

Stan Heath's son is transferring from USF. PG with 3 years left to play and can play immediately. I wonder if Stan Heath and JC are still friends?
