Since in one thread Ben Howland was mentioned, I am going to throw out a Solich type possibility.  Orlando "Tubby" Smith.

I say hire one of those two guys (Ford or boals)now. We know their kinship to OHIO and both are Big10 assistants who are ready.  Get them in here now to talk to returning and recruited players.  This is not the time to wait a week.  Right now the team is in a chaotic state having lost, evidently, one returner and one recruit.  Time to stop the bleeding cause we all know there is at least one other unhappy guy who wants to be closer to a city with a mall

Why don't we just hire Dambrot away from Akron and take Abreau as a transfer?

Still have a bad taste in my mouth from when Tubby tried to get out of UK's commitment to play in Athens in 1997.

For the love of all that's holy, give up the idea of hiring a long term Solich kind of guy.  IT DOESN'T WORK.

Hire a young, hungry up and comer and keep the revolving door going.  It's the most rational course of action for a program like Ohio.

The talk of Ben Howland, Tubby Smith, etc., is just plain unrealistic and off course.  They wouldn't come to a mid major anyway.

Funny my wife and I were talking about Tubby coming to Athens when we drove into work the other day.

I don't disagree, but every one I talked to (Ohio fan or not) about the last coaching change, at the top of the discussion was an apparent desire to not just get another coach using us as a stepping stone, and that JC could be a great find in that department, and was backed up by the comments he made in his first days here.  And more than just general boiler plate new coach speak.  I still believe Schaus did have this in mind when he hired Christian.  Now he may have learned his lesson and won't be naive this time around, but I think it is part of the discussion.

And I agree with others who said the contract should be structured with stiffer buyouts.  I am fine with being a stepping stone job, but I envision that step taking 4-5 years like Groce, not 2 years like Christian.

Anyone else feel like Christian was a "safe" hire for Schaus? That's not a knock on Schaus, it was a very smart move. JC clearly knew how to win in the MAC and had a talented returning roster. Given Groce's high-profile departure, the immediate emphasis on continuity in winning was there. JC was an ideal choice for that. Schaus made a very good choice given the circumstance and JC produced 24 and 25-win seasons. I think we were all blindsided by the 2-year commitment by JC, but that's life in the MAC.

Now, this next coaching decision likely has more flexibility. There's really not a huge core returning. And it's an opportunity to really build a program in this coach's mold, with immediate contributions from Campbell, Stevie and Bean. I think the emphasis will still be on winning, but there will likely be more latitude on how to get there. Less pressure on Schaus than after Groce left.

Maybe that means someone who can grow with the program vs. someone who is already "established" (JC). And maybe that means more of a "personality" that can relate with players vs. a "resume" since it is becoming more clear there may have been personality clashes with JC.

For example, if next year's coach leads the team to 15-17 wins during the 2014-15 season, that might be success given what is happening. If JC came in and only  had 15-17 wins in 2012-13, there would've been hell to pay.

Until the MAC improves as a conference top to bottom, we will be a stepping stone.  We may as well embrace it.  As far as left field candidates, Dane Fife.

NOOOOO Thanks. Bobby Knight wannabe with all the sabre rattling, player demoralization and none of the bb intellect.

HAHA...I knew that would draw a reaction.

Hearing from a source that Ohio AD Jim Schaus is only looking for a current/former head coach to fill the vacant position. No assistants

Is Walt still in Indy? LinkedIn suggests he's now in Memphis since March in corporate world.

If true, not sure I agree with that approach (per my earlier post on the thread). That approach would not have netted us Groce. But Schaus has a pretty good track record, so I trust he knows what he's doing.

Buckeye fans are overjoyed Boals won't get an interview, which probably tells you how stupid we are to not be interviewing him.

Since we don't know how many people will actually be on the roster (pending decisions on transfer from current roster, decisions by the previous staff's signees about whether they are still coming to Ohio, etc.), do you think most attractive candidates for this job would be willing to endure a very tough season next year until he can get a full recruiting class in here to steady the ship?  Or will this cause some candidates to shy away from the job?

This relates to my earlier post about a short term criteria for a new coach:  does he have the ability to retain the Coach Christian recruits, or does he have enough recruiting resources to immediately bring in good players who will be eligible next year to replace players/recruits who may be lost?

Kowalczyk at Toledo decided to go the big time transfer route, let those guys sit a year, and just accept losing for a year.  It paid off for them this year.  The big difference is, the Ohio program has been in MUCH, MUCH better shape than the UT program was when Kowalczyk came in.  We should be able to come up with a legitimate way to avoid a Wilderness Campaign next year, right?

I think the constants of this program are so strong for the mid major level that that should counteract any misgivings about what may happen re wins/losses in the first year of a new regime.  I know Jim Schaus is a good salesman and I would expect him to effectively deal with these questions in the interview process.

Eliminating a bunch of potential candidates before even starting? That's just dumb. I don't agree with this approach just like I don't agree with the half-assed effort that landed us Christian.

I totally agree, it will not be either Ford, Boals, Alexander or Kuwik. It will probably someone that hasn't be mentioned.

I wouldn't assume Dustin or Boals would want to work for Schaus. Jimmy didn't actually give either of them any support the last time around. Boals should be the choice but he may not want the job right now.
