Anyone else feel like Christian was a "safe" hire for Schaus? That's not a knock on Schaus, it was a very smart move. JC clearly knew how to win in the MAC and had a talented returning roster. Given Groce's high-profile departure, the immediate emphasis on continuity in winning was there. JC was an ideal choice for that. Schaus made a very good choice given the circumstance and JC produced 24 and 25-win seasons. I think we were all blindsided by the 2-year commitment by JC, but that's life in the MAC.
Now, this next coaching decision likely has more flexibility. There's really not a huge core returning. And it's an opportunity to really build a program in this coach's mold, with immediate contributions from Campbell, Stevie and Bean. I think the emphasis will still be on winning, but there will likely be more latitude on how to get there. Less pressure on Schaus than after Groce left.
Maybe that means someone who can grow with the program vs. someone who is already "established" (JC). And maybe that means more of a "personality" that can relate with players vs. a "resume" since it is becoming more clear there may have been personality clashes with JC.
For example, if next year's coach leads the team to 15-17 wins during the 2014-15 season, that might be success given what is happening. If JC came in and only had 15-17 wins in 2012-13, there would've been hell to pay.
