Another thing about the NBC4 interview that impressed me is his comments that he's gone to the NCAAs with two teams that played very different styles.  He seems to be a coach that will adapt his coaching to the talent he has rather than forcing players to adapt to a one-size fits all style of play.  The more I hear about this guy the more I like what I hear.

I grew up about 40 minutes from athens in a town where you had to drive at least 30 minutes to get to anything unrelated to outdoor things more exciting than a grocery store and always wished I went to Athens high school. My mom went to Ohio as a non-traditional student in her late 20's-early thirties and got a bachelors and masters degree so I ended up in Athens a lot as a child, and now that I'm a student and have friends here who went to athens high school, they've told me it was pretty sweet. Athens doesn't seem like a bad place to grow up

HAYSEED FALLIN' OFF TURNIP TRUCK BRIAN ASIDE:

(Daniel Stern narrating)

I got to Athens and it was about six times bigger than the place I grew up. My freshman dormmates thought I was from the moon (they weren't too far off) because I said I'd never lived in a place where you could buy gas or get something to eat after 10 p.m. Athens seemed like such a big place to me. Sometimes it still does.

(Joni Mitchell song)

It's weird for me. My hometown was 4700, and the entire county had less people than OU has students. I think deer out manned us.

Try growing up in a town of 1,200 and graduating only 62 kids in your high school class. Oh and K-12: all in the same building.

Since we're going there, my hometown had 298 population (45 yrs later, it now has 303!); I went to school in a town five miles away (road the bus uphill both ways); went to school in the same building all 12 yrs (back then, kindergarten was called "Mom"); and we had 68 kids in our graduating class (69 if you count the baby that was born to two of my classmates -- a guy and a girl -- on graduation day).

I only agree with the most wildly emotional posts in this thread.

But I reserve the right to change my opinion in a millisecond should results prove different than expected or anything else change.

Furthermore, what I write here may or may not be my opinion later ....or, my opinion now may be denied/substituted out should later events require same.

In all seriousness, Saul seems like a good hire and Schaus seems to have been all over it.  That's all we can ask for now.  How it turns out will have to stand independent of what we think now.

But give Coach some time, some room.  We probably won't go undefeated next year.

First and foremost, I like teams that play together, play hard, play smart and which are made up of good dudes.  Give me that and winning will take care of itself for the most part.

Just got off the phone with my sister, who like me, graduated from Ohio in '73.  She really is not into Ohio sports, other than volleyball, and lives in VA.  I related the events of the past week to her very briefly, and she interrupted me when I told her who we'd hired.  "I know who he is!  I heard him during the tournament a couple times on NPR...and he's coming to Ohio?"

Gosh, if this guy has some success, he could generate interest in this program to the level that we haven't seen since at least the Trent years....

I'd feel better if SP just said- I'm never leaving Athens, unless these 10 teams call me. Because JC was just as committed to Ohio until that dream job that we didn't know was his dream job, opened up.

That being said, just saw tweets from Stevie and Treg and they are bouncing off the walls excited about playing for this guy. That's good news.

Well, it's official, a 6'8 junior forward is transferring because of Christian.

But out it's not N'Dour, it's BC 3rd team all ACC F Ryan Anderson.

From all accounts it seems like a great hire- love the player tweets!   But I bet he's here only 4 years or so as by that time I imagine the big boys will be calling him.  No way on Earth he's here 8 years.  Right now though I'll take 4 years and be happy.  Start the Phillips coaching tree, Saul!

And would mister Anderson like to come play next to Tony Campbell and Maurice Ndour for a better coach?...

Dangit, used up my 8 free articles on this device. Getting low on my phone too. Guess I gotta use my work computer. Or use one of the other 20 devices I own with internet connectivity.

We all had our little lovefest for Arkley the other day, but if we truly want to show his work the respect it deserves, we should all pay up for the content he's providing. He doesn't work for free, and people like him won't have a job (and we won't have any content) if no one pays for it. If you love it, but some money behind it.

Full disclosure: I haven't gotten a subscription yet either, but I will if I hit that limit next month.

Sorry about hopping on the soapbox and derailing the thread.

Not sure that was his point. I think he wanted us to have an online subs to help pay Jason's salary. I may be wrong.

FTR ...I have had an online subs for years.

Yeah, I think we all know workarounds for firewalls, but those workarounds don't pay the salary of a single person at the Messenger. My point is that if we value it as much as we say we do, we should support it with more than our eyeballs.

I couldn't find out if the subscription removed the 50-100 ads all over the page or not? Does anyone know?

Also, couldn't be more excited with the hire. Between the energy of him, taylor, and Setty, I am excited for next season.

FYI - Saul's wife is/was a journalist/newscaster - she probably knows of the school's prowess, which didn't hurt in the decision.  Perhaps there is a teaching opportunity for her.  Really solidify them at the school.

Saul is absolutely crushing this presser. I once again ask the question everyone has reiterated: "How can you NOT like this guy?"
