Just listened to the radio interview - count me in!  I stated I wanted a energetic, electric guy that can walk into dorms and cafeterias and connect - sounds like we got him!!

Interesting that he was won over by Athens/OHIO in one trip back in his Wisconsin days.  The Ohio magic works yet again.  You Are Home Coach!

Another radio interview

http://www.detroitsports1051.com/mattdery/2014/04/06/saul...

"I played D3 because there is no D4"

"Flat out it sucks leaving a bunch of guys."

What do people think of when they hear of Fargo - "wood chips"

- really like his personality.

Just listened to the radio thing...this guy has an awesome sense of humor...and self deprecating and humble too.  It would be extremely hard not to love this guy.  Glad to have Saul in Athens.

Listened to the interview.  Started at 36:18, for the record.  Thanks very much for posting the link.  Seems like a very likable and funny guy.  It was clear that he knew the show hosts well enough to banter back and forth with them, so I'm assuming that this Minnesota station had given some ongoing coverage to NDSU.   It'll be a real hoot once he develops rapport with Russell and Rob.

I grew up about 40 minutes from athens in a town where you had to drive at least 30 minutes to get to anything unrelated to outdoor things more exciting than a grocery store and always wished I went to Athens high school. My mom went to Ohio as a non-traditional student in her late 20's-early thirties and got a bachelors and masters degree so I ended up in Athens a lot as a child, and now that I'm a student and have friends here who went to athens high school, they've told me it was pretty sweet. Athens doesn't seem like a bad place to grow up

HAYSEED FALLIN' OFF TURNIP TRUCK BRIAN ASIDE:

(Daniel Stern narrating)

I got to Athens and it was about six times bigger than the place I grew up. My freshman dormmates thought I was from the moon (they weren't too far off) because I said I'd never lived in a place where you could buy gas or get something to eat after 10 p.m. Athens seemed like such a big place to me. Sometimes it still does.

(Joni Mitchell song)

It's weird for me. My hometown was 4700, and the entire county had less people than OU has students. I think deer out manned us.

Same here - Hogs, cattle, prolly even chickens outnumbered the humans in the county................

Very excited for this hire, ironically surprised Boston College didn't go after him.  As a Wisconsin native and casual fan of the Badgers (my Dad's alma mater), I am especially pumped to get a guy from the Bo Ryan coaching tree, and Bo's son as assistant to boot.  I absolutely love Bo Ryan, and I can tell you that brand of basketball is far from boring to watch.  I love it, always have.

The comments basically committing to 8 years at Ohio...Wow!  That was more explicit than Christian.  Even though we were just burnt by false promises, it still excites me.

But...still unreasonable to expect him to stay much past that 6-8 year mark if we end up being successful.  Here's a potential scenario - Ohio goes on a great 8-10 year run with Phillips, who after years of turning down great offers, finally takes one when Bo hangs em up.

He talks a lot about taking care of the basketball. If he can continue to work with bean on cutting down the odd ball mistakes that could be a game changer for him. And agree with borna. This guy can take Stevie to a higher level

I really like this second interview.  Thanks for posing TO!  Boy, he really does make it clear that he's in this for the long haul.  Talks about not being a "moving kind of guy" and assuring that his daughter will graduate from AHS "period."  I control when I move and no one else, he says.  It sounds like Jim had stability as a top question in the interview process.  He's also quoted as saying that his buyout is so high that he's locked in for a good long while.  I'm real curious what it might be -- $3 million, maybe?  I really hope that he turns out to be as good as we all think he is at this moment, because that long-term thing cuts both ways.  We won't be able to afford to buy out his contract if he doesn't work out.  Being almost as much of an optimist as The Optimist, I'm thinking that we don't have to worry about that eventuality!  Can't wait for Saul Ball in the fall!

Random thoughts:

-Kudos to NBC4's Matt Barnes on the interview of Coach Phillips

-Say what you want about Christian. I believe he truly had Ohio in mind for the long haul, but BC came calling. You can't blame anyone for making the professional decision that was right for them. In the parallel professional world, you or I would be crazy to pass up a similar opportunity. I left on my own terms after just three months at one job because something THAT much better for me came along. I consider myself loyal and it was tough to do, but JC and I are not the only ones who didn't stay somewhere long. And does he need to post a message on ohiobobcats.com or get a Bobcat Attack account and thank all of us? No, that's just crazy.

-I thank JC for his time at Ohio. Inherited a great team and couldn't solve one other conference team that season. It happens. Then this year, most expectations were low. The team exceeded most expectations. Let's not act like another team in this state that thinks it should win the conference every year. We may never know what transpired with Jon Smith, and it is certainly unfortunate, but JC is not JG, whom Smith came to play for. Maybe it is a sign that JC was more of a TOS in the locker room. Maybe not. Either way, I will remember these last two years as fun rooting years for this team. There were no tourney wins, but the team was competitive, entertaining and humble. We were spoiled to be able to root for these players. Much credit to both JG and JC for building this team.

-It was unfortunate to lose Levert and may be unfortunate to Owens. Anyone on this board passing judgment on these two... Seriously? Let them live their lives and let the players that want to be in Athens play. That said, I would say it is very likely Mr. Owens has received a call from Mr. Phillips.

-Speaking of Phillips... WOW! DOES THIS GUY HAVE SOME ENERGY OR WHAT!? His personality is like JG after a cup of coffee, a monster energy drink, a 5 hour energy and some Jessie Spano pills. Kudos to Schaus on moving quickly to a guy who looks like a great ambassador for this program. JC is talented at his craft and I'm sure he has passion for the game, but the kind of bubbly passion that Phillips has is rare.

-Those are some big words in Barnes' interview stating his daughter will graduate from Athens High School. He doesn't want the nature of the coaching beast to get in the way of setting down roots and that is another admirable part of his personality. Still, it is not up to us to hold him to these words. If Ohio does well and if a certain Coach Ryan retires some day... well, let the man make his own career moves. For now, let's enjoy this ride!

-No offense to Christian... But I am as excited to attend a Phillips meet-and-greet as I was to attend any Bobcat game this last year. (That said, I was an angel of death in the Convo in 2013-14 - sorry!) Not sure I will make it Tuesday, might have to wait for the caravan.

-Lost in all of this, and the most unimportant thing basketball-wise, Phillips said in Barnes' interview... He said he was sitting around with his college teammates/"buddies" at the Final Four when he found out he had an interview with Ohio. Just imagine how special it would be for you or I to be hanging out with our college friends and to then get this job in a 24 hour turnaround of what must be the team's annual tradition.

-Not to downplay how fun a meet-and-greet can be, but... IS IT NOVEMBER YET!?

The more quotes I read from Phillips and the more I listen to his interviews the more excited I become about this.  I've been fighting the urge to scream "This is our coach! This is our coach! THIS IS OUR MOTHER****ING COACH!!!!" (my parents are asleep or else I probably would be)

I almost started a Saul's humor thread after reading this from a ND website.  He related a story about playing for Bo Ryan...

“I rarely got to play,” Phillips informed the media 17 days ago. “But I do remember one game when the student section started chanting: ‘We want Saul, we want Saul.’ So Bo waves me over, puts his arm around me and says: ‘Saul, go over there and see what they want.’”

Try growing up in a town of 1,200 and graduating only 62 kids in your high school class. Oh and K-12: all in the same building.

I think the thing I'm hearing from him, just by the tone of his voice and the way he speaks, is that he just cares more. He knows Ohio is a good job and he cares a lot about what he does, who he works with and most of all, his family. This guy is going to be a king in Athens.

I LOVE this hire!!!

After JC left I said I wanted the hot young assistant. You know what is better? A hot young head coach!!! Schuas has upgraded our expectations. No more assistant head coaches... we can go and grab that young head coach that took his team to the NCAA tournament in a lower level conference.

Love that he wants to stay for a while. Do I think that will happen? Nope... but I I am more confident it will be for the right reason... kinda like Groce where a big job opens and they want Saul because he made Ohio into a VCU/Butler/Wichita St type program.

Welcome aboard Saul!
