UC/Howard coming down to the wire and I'm convinced no one on this video production has ever watched a basketball game on TV. Literally every possession they cut to a behind the basket camera whenever a shot goes up.

Zips on three game skid, losing to UNLV away.

The Zips were in a big hole and made a run at the end but didn't make the most of final times down the floor. OUr guards should force some TOs against them if Zippy doesn't improve in that aspect come MAC time.

In a way the Zips are smallish like OHIO but have a superstar BIG in Freeman but no real help should he slip. Have Sammy Hunter but he seems allergic to the paint. Not getting good guard play with limited assists, too many TO's and not enough balanced scoring.

Just late night dreaming of last spring Freeman going into the portal and picking OHIO for his final year and name on his sheepskin! What a team that could have been in Athens. It takes some getting used to getting old and having to take a leak too often during the night and getting caught up on the sporting news and having these half awake dreams!

Little Rock shot 63.8% and 60% from the field and 3pt land, respectively. From the FT line? They only had 7 attempts but shot 57.1%.

NCAA says NO to Ali Ali ... MAC race has tightened up.
Feel bad for the kid, but talk about a cautionary tale for portal jumpers.

He could be a starter (maybe not and thats why he left) on a Top 25 team, instead he's just a student at Akron.

On that note, Reggie Bass is really struggling lately.

Since that big game vs JMU, he's averaging 7.2 points. Shooting 36% this season. 28% from 3. Only played 16 mins last night vs College of Charleston.
I read an article in the Akron Beacon and I was left pondering on the mental health topic as it relates to the portal.

Seems to be a very fine line here. Groce was quoted basically saying that Ali not being granted eligibility/lack of playing time negatively contributes to his mental health. I was pretty shocked that he went there.

Mental health needs to be taken very seriously and I understand the complexity that comes with it. As it relates to the transfer portal, this seems to be a gray area on if it meets the NCAA's threshold to grant immediate eligibility.

I mean, yeah, obviously riding the bench is going to take a hit on anybody's mental health. I've lost a starting job, it sucks, no other way to put it.

The article makes it sound like they have medical documentation from both Akron and Butler that states Akron is the best place for him. I'd be curious to know their opinion on if being part of the basketball team affects his mental health one way or another.

One of the primary criteria for waiving the one year wait period is whether the transfer was for mental health reasons. I’m sure that Akron is setting up for an appeal. Butler is in tha tank with them so that Ali is out of their hair.

Within the first five minutes it was a beat down.

Huh, Fran Dunphy is now at LaSalle. And taking his former team to triple OT on their home floor.

The article makes it sound like the appeal was already denied, I haven't really followed this situation closely because I just assumed he transferred knowing he would be fine to play right away.

Groce said he is concerned about Ali's "mental health," and that UA will "continue to work with the NCAA in a professional and respectful manner."

"At the appeal level, the mental health waiver was denied," Groce said. "As I said in a tweet that was sent out [last week], certainly we tried to go through the process in a very respectful and professional manner. I think they feel that way. We recognize, obviously, that mental illness is real. It is documented that one in five adults experience mental illness, so we know it's real.

So... two things.

I'm sure there is a lot we won't ever know, but I think the NCAA might listen if this was in reverse. He's from Fort Wayne. He transferred TO Butler.

He'd didn't go to Akron, because he's a local kid. He went to BUTLER, because he's a local kid. Now he's back to Akron and claiming mental health reasons, or at least Groce is.

I'm not sure I buy it, and it's unfortunate they're playing this tune. Maybe Groce is the calm presence this kid needs, but why did he leave in the first place?

And if his mental health is truly the reason he finds peace further from his friends and family, he can still be with the team, he can still be with Groce, he can still be at Akron... he just can't suit up. Because there are very simple rules in place, that are tremendously lax to begin with, that he didn't follow.

I think I'm right with you on this. IMO, Groce looks pretty sleazy here, almost Harbaugh-like.

Another fact I'd be interested in finding out, has Ali taken any NIL money to come back to Akron? Not sure how the NCAA fits into that scenario but if he did take NIL to come back, the mental health argument loses a little bit of credibility.

Ali Ali's friends, teammates, assistant coaches and head coach where Ali had success are all in Akron.

Ali had two concussions while playing for Butler. That can really shake someone.

If the kid has added anxiety from his injuries and new surroundings at Butler it probably makes mental health sense to return to where he is ioved and has had success and is comfortable with the surroundings. I do not understand why he hasn't been allowed to play. It is not like a bunch of others in college sports want to jump back to where they were and take on the title of having mental illness to do so.

Let him play. Where is the compassion? Make a new rule that a player may return (if wanted) to his/her original school of choice if eligibility remains. I'd bet the desire to do so in the history of transfers may be counted on fingers and toes!

I generally agree on this, however, I don't see them allowing players to come back that easily. How would coaches be able to maintain a roster if players can leave and come back at will?

He had 4 years plus summer school to graduate. Holden from Wright State was originally going to be ineligible since he didn't graduate was coming back. However, he took classes this summer and graduated and is now playing. Groce had to know this was an issue. Seems like they are pushing this since he didn't graduate. Concussions are bad, but he had the equivalent of 5 years to graduate and didn't. Need to draw the line somewhere. He is eligible to play next year so get busy and graduate and play next year.

This is just ridiculous. We're gonna make eligibility decisions based on if someone is sad or not now? Give me a break. Make clear rules and carry them out consistently, it's not that hard.

Putting aside the Mental Health things, Ali Ali's case is actually pretty interesting. The way the NCAA policy is written, and the rationale behind the policy, seems to assume a third school. In Ali's case, he's transferring back to his first school.

The policy limits eligibility for second time transfers because it assumes a third school slows down progress towards a degree. I wonder if that's the case with Ali, given that he's transferring back to Akron, and Akron is barely a real school.

As noted on the Zips board, this is Ali's 5th year (3 at Akron, 1 at Butler). He supposedly won't graduate until the spring, which makes you wonder if he has some academic issues. Apparently eligible when he left Akron, and apparently eligible while at Butler (he played).

It's not uncommon to need 5 years to graduate ... but also not uncommon to do it in 3-plus. I would think most of his Butler hours transferred, and whatever Akron hours he lost in the first move he gained by going back. Some wacky math going on???

Weird case all around.

WHAT THE

I saw this halftime score and immediately thought my app was wrong.

But no, WMU lost at home to St. Thomas 66-51.

And to re-trace our steps here, WMU lost only by 4 at Northwestern. Last night, Northwestern upset #1 Purdue.

Foul shooting not just an issue for OUr Bobcats. Akron, down 1 at the half to Bradley, is 1 of 6 from the line, slightly worse than Bradley's 2 of 6.

And, at the risk of jinxing the Blue Hens, Delaware leads X 67-58 with 10 minutes left.
