Ohio is one of six MAC schools still not on-board yet with ESPN’s digital network. Every MAC school is obligated — per last year’s new television agreement with ESPN — to eventually produce more than 30 live events per year for the ESPN3 digital platform.
The issue is equipment. Other MAC schools were closer to reaching ESPN’s standards that Ohio was.
Schaus said Ohio’s plan is to be up and running with the digital, streaming network in time for the 2016-17 school year. Making that happen will require HD capable cameras, a control room, more equipment and personnel.
Ohio can field aspiring broadcast students to fill out some of the personnel needs, but the department will need “several hundreds of thousands of dollars” to make itself ESPN ready, Schaus said.
“It’s a MAC requirement, so we will be doing it. But we also want to do it,” Schaus said.
