As you might expect, it looks a lot like the photos I've seen of when the Convo was built.
Jeff, from what you've seen, does it look like an improvement over the old seating?
I meant that without the seats it looks like it did during the original construction days.

Apple is making a giant, scaled iPhone version that it's going to offer to arenas as a hanging video board.

The cement makes it look more like Mackey ...maybe I am not following your comment. http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/6d/12/72/6d1272bb1...

I'm guess I was not following yours, the empty arena looks like any concrete bowl without seats, I took it that you were saying it looked like bleachers. I'm well aware of what Mackey looks like, been all through it many times. I wish we would have implemented the tunnel system like Purdue did, makes going from facility to facility very convent.

I haven't been in there in years. What did they do, what do they use, the old "cheap seats" "broadcast" booth. When it was built it looked like a good idea but no one want to use it.

All of you do know the story behind putting locks on the large air returns?
Or about when they started to lower the roof and it just kept sitting on the center posts?
Or about the fatal fall from the roof?

Or about the handball courts that were somewhat hidden away from the public/students?

Geez, I remember it seemed we moved the media row/area around about every couple of games. I would put place cards showing where the media and scouts should sit. A couple of really sharp students would look them over and always wanted to meet a couple of high profile scouts/ front office people like Dick McGuire or Wayne Embry.

Fond memories of the big, then new roundhouse. Used to love standing at midcourt where the sound just went dead because of the shape. I recall a couple of game official at the toss talking to the two centers and then looking around like something strange was going on.

An Arkley article about Convo, and other facility upgrades from yesterday:

http://www.athensmessenger.com/sports/ohiouniversity/from...

Answers a bit about the actual seats that will be going into The Convo:

"Ohio is swapping out the cloth, padded seats for molded plastic. Padding will be found on the seat and chair back in the lower levels, with padding only on the seat in the upper reaches of the Convo."

So we're looking at new Convo scoreboard but we still haven't done the damn roof study yet???? Guess I won't hold out too much hope on getting a hanging board anytime soon.

OK - I'll go with a PG w/8-9 assists and 8-10 pts (and <2 TO's) a game over a new scoreboard as a priority over the next year or two - EVERYDAY/ANYDAY

They decided to compromise by making the seat padding a limited option.

If what Arkley described is what we're getting, it's fine by me. We didn't have padded seat backs before anyway.

It's been talked about again and again, but why is a hanging scoreboard entirely necessary? If we get rid of that, then we get rid of the need and expense of engineering studies.

Well our current scoreboard sucks and every school has one so I can't imagine it would be that expensive to do in today's electronic age. Of course I'll take a winning team first, but the scoreboard misinformation and procrastination by the athletic dept is getting old.

Yep. I hate seeing highlights, actually knowing how many points and fouls different players have, and seeing the score of the game without cops and cheerleaders standing in the way. The rest of the schools in the conference are really behind our innovative approach to scoreboards.

Agreed. Add to that the glitches with the current scoreboard blanking out occasionally. If not a center hanging scoreboard, at the very least, fix the scoreboards in the current locations and place additional scoreboards/videoboards on the upper walls of the convo. The current video boards are pointless when they flash printed information, like injury updates. Nobody can read it.

How many fouls does (enter OHIO or opposing player name here) have? I dunno - they put it on the scoreboard for 2 seconds while I was not looking at it - or there were cheerleaders, not cheerleading, standing in front of it when I did.......

I also think that a high quality, 4 sided, hanging scoreboard with video screens that everyone in the arena sees can add a lot to the fan experience (read "total value" of experience), as well as add to the home court advantage. The impact of the "Ozone" is declining - and that is a trend nationally with student participation - doubt that is going to change. Exciting and Impactful thru the game videos and sound build energy and response from the home crowd. I need binoculars to see the videos we have now - and I'm not that far away from the (blocked view by various court side pedestrians) video screens we have now.

Yes,and from my vantage point they often block part of the scoreboard with those damn black seats. That's what you call a self-inflicted injury! ;-(

My point wasn't that upgrades weren't needed - they most definitely are. My point was, if costs are a factor, why not put them in the upper levels where weight isn't an issue.
