I was also thinking the areas that are the facing of the upper level may be blocked by people. The ultimate solution is the hanging board, but I still like the idea, and I think the areas that are the face of the silver seats kind of behind the back boards, where the current scoreboards are would be the place for such ribbon boards.

On a non seat subject...how about the possibility of ribbon signs all around the Convo against the walls at the mid level, right below the upper level? This could be used for statistics, advertising, etc. I would think advertisers would jump on this. And it might enhance the ability to show stats.

I have questions/thoughts on this idea:

*How high would those have to be to be well seen? People stand in the front of those areas a lot during games, and we already have that issue with the court side boards.

*How much would those scoreboards potentially be in the way of the front row seats in the upper level? Being a holder of two such seats, I have an interest in that.

Beyond that, as a general idea, I think it's great. I would think they could be put in front of the current media area for sure. Or another thought might be in front of the scorer's table and the Bobcat Black seats. Yet another thought might be to put the ribbon boards along the same baseline areas where the current scoreboards are now, but at the top, so they'd be above those who seem to like to stand in those spots. A lot of information and advertising could be relayed if they were across the majority of that area. I'm not sure how much visual interference it might create for shooters though, or how much regulation there is in the NCAA for those locations of an arena.
I'd never really considered ribbon scoreboards in the Convo. That would be very cool. My first thought is right below the media seats or that level would be perfect. As OU Country mentions, people standing in front of that would be an issue. The tuba's for the 110 block the camera for the livestream.
I really wish the AD could find a way to fit the 110 into the end of the court on the vistor's baseline. That end is smaller so they don't really fit, but if you could somehow fit them there, I feel that would be ideal.
You'd be surprise how much this makes an arena look big-time. When Xavier added theirs, the difference was night and day. The Convo has a weird layout though with all the breaks in wall space for arena entrances. Not sure how it would look.

One place where I've noticed the low baseline ribbons is at WVU. They rotate static ads during play (while showing time and score for players and those seated low) and are then animated during time outs and pre/post game. That scoreboard isn't too shabby either.

Yes, I have heard from two AD employees that the scoreboard is definite in the next couple of years. Sounds like Pepsi is paying. New scoreboard for Peden next year...also Pepsi.
10 year pouring rights contracts are extremely lucrative with today's fountain drink prices. Makes perfect sense that a beverage company would "pay" for the scoreboards.
They won't make the $ back on the product - never seen a beverage company make money from what they sell/pour for these type sponsorships. It's the advertising/visibility they are paying for (plus the customer entertainment/tics premium seats part of the package)

Have to respectfully disagree my good friend. In a town as small as Athens, the whole town becomes a Pepsi town. The theaters serve Pepsi products as do most of the bars and restaurants. In 10 years, they'll make it back in spades.

They don't get the concession per drink sales $'s - they get the canister/pre-mix syrup sales.

Interesting. Their arena is very similar to the Convo, 14K seats. I like the windows. Convo opened Dec. 3, 1968, WVU broke ground on Dec 21, 1968.

They don't make the $'s on the concession per cup sales - the venue does. They only sell the syrup mix/canisters - and that is from the bottler not the parent company. The bottler might get a percentage of the concession sales - but I doubt it. Athens already is a Pepsi town (like most) - and why I get irked just about everywhere I go and have to drink that sugared up version of the original cola. These type sponsorships are all about influencing consumers - all the $ is made in other channels - retail stores, restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores, etc.

If they're spending money to influence consumers (and you are correct), then then they must think that it's a money maker ultimately.

The contract is a whole campus contract which means dining halls, Mem Aud, Baker and every vending machine on campus.

That's exactly the kind of thing I envisioned in my comments. I think it would be very useful to have, with or without the center court scoreboard.

A pittance compared to what they do in off campus area retail chain, convenience, etc. My only point is that the spend is for payoff expectation from brand exposure - not venue (including campus) sales.

If the vendor deems the potential both in and out of The Convo to be worthwhile, what's it matter where the sales come from?

The lucrative aspect for Pepsi is that they buy rights to the entire campus with the athletic department sponsorship.

And for the sport of sending this to Siberia, let's talk about Pepsi's opportunity to influence habit-developing young adults with habit forming carbonated corn syrup and caffeine.

I never drank Mountain Dew until I was in college.

Interesting point Pete. Ultimately it is the parent who buys the beverage so if they don't want their child to have that nasty stuff, the they can buy something else. When we come through the Rohr Room on our way to our seats, it's popcorn (I wish they would use Shagbark) and a water for everyone.

I'm talking about dorm, dining hall, and common area vending, where University students are allowed to make terrible mistakes promoting tooth decay and sleep deprivation.

Tap Water: The official beverage of the Ohio Bobcats

I'm actually surprised Coke or Pepsi haven't tried to do that with Aquafina or Dasani. It'd stand out if you sort of winked at the whole "official beverage" thing with your own product.

Having seen some pictures of the new bleachers in the O Zone section, it does not appear that the Dan Lowe plaque was reinstalled.

I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that will get done before the season. Or maybe even a re-dedication before a game this season.
