I vaguely recall a classic poster (circa 1983-4) of Victor Alexander dunking v. DePaul when legendary coach Ray Meyer brought the Blue Demons to Athens for a Valentine's Day game in the Convo. Maybe someone can recall more details about this poster.

As an ND fan living in the middle of Buckeye country, I recall going to St. John's Arena in the mid-1970s when I was in junior high school and Adrian Dantley was a freshman at ND. The Irish, a top-5 team that year, were heavily favored against a sub-.500 o$u team but trailed late in the game thanks in part to Dantley receiving a technical for dunking on a breakaway. I remember thinking there was no way I was returning to school for several days/weeks if ND had lost but was saved on a late comeback by the Irish.

Quiz time for the old-timers: what was one thing Alexander and Dantley had in common?

Jamie Brock was one chiseled dude.  Man, I forgot all about that dude.

I'm pretty sure Lorenzo Bryant, and not Basra Fakhir, stole the Nintendo.  Mainly because we started calling him Nintendo Bryant.

Lewis Geter indeed was a great dunker.

All that said, the best dunker I ever saw in the Convo was Thunder Dan Majerle.

No way, dude. Chandler Thompson. Period.

(I know this because we are the same age, I think)

He threw down several like that in the Convo. Just sick.

As for Brock, I went to high school with the guy--he's about three years older. Great guy. Didn't pick on me in high school, but the double shot of Wild Turkey he bought me the first weekend of college sure was kind of cruel.

I thought it was Nintendo Bryant. But then I couldn't remember if it was him or Alonzo Motley. Either way, I don't think it ended up being that big of a deal. Both guys have gone on to live productive lives, from what I've heard.

Too funny.  I couldn't remember Chandler Thompson's name - just that Ball State had a dude who could dunk back in my day.

Alonzo Motley -- edit -- had the wrong guy in mind pre-edit  I think.

Best Dunk By OU Player - Geno Ford alley oop bank off the glass to a trailing Gary Trent. Cannot remember who we were playing but it was thunderous!

Best Dunk By Opposing team player - Ron Harper, off a steal at top of key down the court alone with a twist and pump. It was his senior year - only time I remember an opposing player get an applause/ovation (and pretty good one) from the OU crowd - it was a thing of beauty.

Have no doubts about Harper. But like I said in an earlier post, I enrolled at Ohio in 1987.

Sorry, BSquared, but the Historian will have to school you on this one.

The poster in question - prominently displayed in the Blue Ruin - was from an EMU game. I remember the dunk in question - a rare breakaway for Victor followed by a power slam.  The place went crazy.  I know this to be true because I was at the EMU game but had to watch the Depaul game on TV after having completed an interview for an internship in Cleveland. Didn't get the internship.

And because your trivia question is so open ended, I win by answering, they both had Danny Nee as a coach.

I disagree.  Every single Devo dunk is the same.

I don't think Nee got to Notre Dame until the year after Dantley had moved on to the NBA.

I give him credit for finding a new, unexpected way to be eye-rollingly negative.

At the risk of sounding eye-rollingly negative (whatever that is), I would agree.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think there was a poster of Alexander dunking in a packed Convo v. DePaul. Could be mistaken. Perhaps cc cat, Joe Mac or Jeff Mac might remember.

Dantley and Alexander might share Dapper Dan MVP honors. Not sure. Nee was not a coach under Digger Phelps at ND when Dantley was there. Quite possible, although not sure, that Nee was in Vietnam at that time. More likely he was back in the US by then.

Hint on quiz: DePaul's Mark Aguire also shared this attribute w/ Dantley and Alexander.

To clarify, SBH is negative to an extent it makes me roll my eyes.  Every Washington dunk is the same.  Our freshmen are awful.  We can't develop big men.  It's just ridiculous.

All three were as wide as they were tall?

As for the dunking, how many players have we had that vary the dunks greatly?   Devo does have a variety of ways that he gets his dunks (i.e. alley oops, put backs, fast breaks, etc.)

Very good, Van. You could say their rear ends were an asset for rebounding.

If I recall, against BG last year (senior night), he had a two-hand flush, one-hand dunk with the other behind his head, and he went up and dunked one behind his head.

Clearly all the same.

BEST Dunk rejection of all time

Tim Joyce back in the late 70's at the Convo with the Cats on the short end, an opponent wanting to add insult decides a tomahawk throwdown is appropriate but Bobcat Joyce thought otherwise.

With the player about to slam it through a defiant TJ jumps up and gets his hand over the top of the hoop and palms the ball as it comes into the hoop and with a he-man force flips the opponent still clutching the ball in the tomahawk position assbackwards onto the floor.  Goal tending and one but the best clean foul anti-dunk money could buy.

Perhaps when you get into the real world in eight or nine more years, Dragon, you will take off the green-colored glasses with respect to all things Ohio.  I didn't say our freshmen are terrible; just that they're not causing other coaches to lose sleep at night.  And you haven't seen me post a word on the fact that our coach tried to call time out (with none left) in the closing seconds of Tuesday's game.

Reading all these accounts of dunks of the past brings back a lot of memories.

There have been many great individual dunks by quite a few players in the history of Ohio University, but Gary Trent without a doubt is the greatest dunker I've ever seen.  My close acquaintance with Ohio basketball began in 1977, so I can't judge Don Hilt.

My favorite dunks by Trent involved seeing a rebound hit the floor under the basket or go low, leading to several players in a scrum trying to get the ball.  All of a sudden, you would see Trent elevate from below the basket and absolutely crush the dunk.  Not many players can do that.  (Actually, Ivo did something along these lines recently in the Convo.)

I enjoyed BobcatJH's post tremendously. And not only do I agree with with him about Stoney (being one of the people who mentioned him upthread), I agree about Flenorl. I think he gets overlooked because the team as a whole was so bad when was he here -- the Wilderness Campaign and all -- but he was an awesome athlete and dunking machine.

I just have a hard time ranking things like this because I like all of them so much... but clearly, Trent was head and shoulders above everyone. He was a freak of nature.

I have to say also that I can't see how anyone could say all of Devo's dunks are the same... he has all kinds of moves and definitely belongs way up there on the best dunkers list.

Oh, wow, I didn't realize your endless reserves of grace.

Please, lecture me more on my life that you know so much about.

And I had no idea I was wearing green-colored glasses.  I just thought I was making observations based on what I saw rather than what I wanted to see.  Weird.   I guess you're right.  You'll never find me criticizing this team.  It's just not in me.

You seem oversensitive for someone who's continually "rolling his eyes" in response to others' posts, or who joked about Marshall fans' "reedin' and writin'.  Sorry to have clouded the snow globe that is your fan experience.
