NICE!  I remember when WOUB used to play all home games ... this is back in the 80's .. but I remember when Marty Lehman got taken down by a Farshall player and "a hockey game " broke out... John Rhodes picked him up ... I was 10 years old and a ball boy.....my dad had to come down to the court and get me cause Farshall fans were not kind!

Anyone remember what an athlete Basra F. was.  ? then he stole a nintendo from KMart.  Jerry LeBold and Chad Gill era.....

Are you thinking of the right guy? Fakhir played (post-Trent) 96-98 with his best season his senior season; Gill and Lebold played together in 1990.

A bit of Basra Fakir lore:

In the bozo section, we couldn't wait for senior night for Bas so we could loudly acknowledge Mother Fakir when he walked out.  Simple times, simple minds, simple amusements, and peppermint schnapps must have fueled that episode.  Sigh.  I don't think she was there that night.

Kirk Lehman?  His brother played for Toledo.  And John Rhodes and Kirk were of different eras.

No, I think he's correctly referring to Marty (Warsaw, IN if memory serves). I vaguely remember a very ugly incident with Marshall. I think Marty ended up a little bloody after that one.

And for my money, no one can touch Trent.  He performed a thunder slam from behind the backboard at BGSU that simply stunned the crowd. It was my only enjoyable trip to that godforsaken place.

34 posts on this thread and not one mention of Bridgewater?

Sure he didn't get a lot of run, but the Dunk Contests between Bridgy and Flomo in practice were legendary.

I don't remember Victor Alexander being a "project."  There were lots of news stories about what a great "get" he was when Danny Nee signed him.  I remember going with friends, including BSquared, I believe, to see his first practice in Athens because there was so much hype about him.

Do not think Vic was condisered a project. Was one of top players in Philly (Ben Franklin HS I believe) and was a huge get for Coach Nee.  Next to Trent (his dunks were sick-vicious-dangerous) Vic Alexander would rate #2. He had some girth and when he slammed one down the backboard would sway for what seemed like a few minutes.  Vic was fun to watch and him and Devereaux  along with Snoopy-G and Jamerson were the best 1-2 punch Bobcats that I ever saw.

I've only been paying attention since 2004, so I can't speak for Flomo, Trent, etc. Clearly, Washington is the best since I've been a fan. After that it would be Jerome Tillman, who was blessed with hops but not a lot of height, which hampered his dunking ability working in the post. Dunking on Osby of Maryland twice and the two huge alley oops against Akron are my fondest memories of Jerome.

www.youtube.com/watch

From there, I will lump Terren Harbut, Sonny Troutman, Johnnie Jackson, and Ivo Baltic in the same group. They all have had a few great dunks but not nearly as much volume as Devaughn and Jerome.

I don't remember him either.

Edit: Just looked him up and he's there.  Marty Lehmann 1985-1988.  I left Athens for good 12/1984 so that explains it.

Marty Lehman was a starter on Billy's '88 team that, well, kind of choked away the MAC regular season title at home and lost the MAC tourney title game to EMU. Kind of a glue guy, he was on the same squad as Dink, Jamerson, Snoop, and Rhodes. He shared time at PF with Jamie Brock if I recall.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Basra briefly walk on to the football team? It may have only lasted a few days in the spring but I swear I walked over to catch a spring paractice circa 1997 for that specific reason.

No way Vic was a project.

6'7"-260 and he could shoot....and of course with that size rebound and dunk.

I just remembering that team in the midst of the doom and gloom of a dismal football program.....brought a little pride back into this old boys green heart.

If we include Grover we have to include - Jason LaFerla, 5-11, St. John the Baptist (West Islip, N.Y.); Justin LaFerla, 5-11, St. John the Baptist (West Islip, N.Y.).

Wasn't "dunking" illegal up until 77 or 78?  I remember guys going up over the rim and delicately dropping the ball into the hoop.  One of Vic Alexander's hero's, Darryl Dawkins, was a big reason for the introduction of the break away rim.

No, it was legal in the 1960s and before but was made a violation for a few years -- mid 70s I think it was -- and then the anti-dunking rule was removed.  As best I can recall, the anti-dunking rule was only in place a half dozen years or less.

Having grown up in Athens and then going to OU, I'll chip in with three top dunkers that I saw over that spread:

1. Gary Trent: Hands down. Gets #1 status for that breakaway windmill dunk on BG his junior season all by itself. I was in middle/high school then, so the one thing I remember from those days - other than the ancient Legion ushers never knowing which section was reserved and which wasn't - were flashes of Gary stealing cross-court passes at foul line extended or half-court and rushing to the other end for slams. He had killer drop step moves, too, that ended in dunks. So, too, did Curtis Simmons. Let's not forget how good he was. I know he had some issues when he was at OU, but he could be a bad man on the court.

2. Diante Flenorl: I can't believe he only has gotten a passing mention on here. Perhaps the best dunker on the team over the entire post-Trent era, save maybe Devo. You could fill a highlight tape with nothing but him dunking alley oops from Corey Reed and, later, Dustin Ford. He was a nice guy, too, but again, a bad mofo with some of the craziest ups I can remember from a Bobcat.

3. Shaun Stonerook: Again, he got a passing mention in a few posts, and he didn't necessarily have a ton of dunks (compared to now, when his highlight tapes from Italy are some real dunkfests). BUT, I did have the benefit of seeing two of his all-time greatest dunks, both taking place in the same game - the win over a then-undefeated and then-12th (or so) ranked Syracuse team in their own building in the first round of their own tournament. One was a tip jam that saw Stoney rise to seemingly Dwight Howard levels of altitude and the other was a baseline slam that came in a crucial moment toward the end of the game. Both were in very close proximity to Etan Thomas, who's had a nice pro career. He had an amazing game that night, as did Sanjay, but Stoney looked like the prequel to Blake Griffin that night.

I sat at midcourt on press row and was a couple of seats away from Donovan McNabb, who was still at Syracuse and was doing color for the home hoops feed. I think, having seen the tape, that he set the NCAA record for saying "most definitely" during a broadcast. That game was awesome. We beat them fair and square, led the whole game and saw the contest end in a handshake line shouting match between Jim Boeheim and the dean of MAC assistant coaches, Mike Elfers. Reason why: Syracuse was something like 6-0 at the time, but most of their games had been on TV, so we had tape of them all. We, on the other hand, were 2-0, having beat (I think) Wilmington and BG. Well, MAC rules prevented Syracuse from getting the BG tape. And Wilmington was coached by a former Hunter guy, so there was no way in hell he was sending that tape. Fast forward to the end of the game, handshake line. Elfers, who had jawed with Boeheim during the game, rhetorically asked the coach if he still needed some scouting tape. That sent Boeheim over the edge and some "mofos" were thrown around. It was hilarious.

Lew Alcindor rule 1967  until 1976 sure did slow down those Bruins

Thanks for the clarification.  I was going from memory.  You, obviously, took the time to look up the actual facts.  Hey, moderators, is that grounds for suspension?
