For those of you that were at the Convo how many people attended the Friday game?
Maybe 3750. 7000+ at Toledo tonight (I have a photo).
Toledo 100% sold and full? Impressive. I think 7000 is capacity of Savage.

edit: Savage Arena capacity 7014.

Sum of my thoughts on the thread

Convo Atmosphere - Sucks and on the decline. The old dude over there in the NoZone every game TY rocks - puts the entire student body to shame.

New Scoreboard - Can only help increase attendance and in game experience and home court advantage. Not making the investment only guarantees further decline. If nothing else is an added draw for the local/regional community - OU students have become almost a non-factor.

Decibels - The pre-game piped in music was Loud - and Bad - Bad as in not that great selection - and Bad system Bass/Tenor sound mix - Tinny as friggin' all get out - Need More "All About That Bass" (so does not sound like just a bunch o' screechin' crap piped out by crap sound system - and/or system control team who also has no clue how to do this stuff). Loud is good - if WHAT is Loud - Is Good...... As far as the 110 (60?) vs the system - I think the band is not as loud as it used to be - and I have been going to games at the Convo since 1977 (and was originally an accepted OU Music School applicant who knew how to make a trumpet/cornett blast - was accepted as 2nd part player without even auditionining as I had been prior accepted to tO$U School of Music - one of six trumpet/cornett accepted of 40 plus auditioned) before deciding to come to OU instead....).

Parking and getting Into the Convo. I'm pretty much pissed off every game I go to this year before I even get into the Convo. Platinum/Bobcat Club supporter for nearly 3 DECADES. Ongoing couple years now I sweat where I will end up being able to park - and even with MUCH lower attendance I end up typically parking closer to the OU Credit Union than the Convo - WTF! I put out pretty big $'s - WTF! And then have the long hike from the credit union parking lot and Then the Long wlak now around the Convo Outer walkways because - Why? NOBODY has Ever explained this crap - Why is Anyone Safer for this? I still allege this is some sweetheart collusion $ deal that offers No Added Safety or Security - Just lines a Donr and a Receivers pockets.

We still have some strong and energetic fans. Even with the piss poor attendance at the UB game - we did get some noise up a few key times (irregardless of the begging dude on the system begging and making me feel pretty much embarrassed hoping that did not came across on the broadcast)

The ROTC group was awesome. Bet that is the last game they are at TY though.....

Further per parking - My point was the experience Before even get into the Convo - sucks. I just did some math - I Spend/Invest/Contribute every year for Years now - appx $1,200 FBall/BBall tics, plus over $700 a year Bobcat Club donations - then other ad hoc donations. And for FBall I park right outside the entrance - for BBall I park closer to The Plains....

FBall attendance is strong - BBall is Soft - WTF??

I don't get the parking/long walk complaint. I kind of hope your problem only gets worse as that will mean more fans in the Convo. Sounds like it's your pet peeve though. Maybe just call and see how much more $ it will take to get a pass better than the blue lot pass. Anyway parking is always gonna be a problem at OU.

I have a red lot pass (used to be blue but cut back on tickets this year) but I park in the Peden lot. Much closer to the entrance door plus there is always a spot so I can get there right after the national anthem. Two big plusses - no pregame music to listen to and close parking.

Shh . . . don't want too many people to know about this option, or it'll be full all the time like the rings around the Convo.

A promotion to get people in the seats like band day and the other promos they do. Glad they came because the student side would have been empty.

Have had blue lot forever - and for some reason it's harder to park in the "ring" lot last couple years. Sucks when driving 75 miles after work and trying to get in before the game starts....

Largely due to an increased and needed handicapped spacing.

That, and the fact that due to security concerns, the highest level of OBC donors can no longer park under the Convo. Therefore, those first-level donors are now in the first ring, forcing those who used to have access to first ring out to the second ring and beyond. Also, there are virtually never enough first-level donors to actually fill out that first ring.

The Al-Qaeda sleeper cell foiled again! I'm sure a multiyear OBC member nefariously got platinum seats just to park underneath the Convo during a game. Our crack security eliminated that option, so he planned an attack on the side door of the Convo... but once he got scolded by a guy in a yellow jacket, he realized he was facing a hardened target and no attack could succeed.

I'll take any chance I can get to complain about the overdone security. You'd think I would be used to it by now but nope, angry every time I walk up. Let cars park under the convo, fire the yellow shirts and sell the pointless barriers for scrap.

Some serious and not so serious Convo issues for me

Outside the convo issues:

I take a person with mobility issues to the games and drop him off in the back where he has access via the elevator. Of course he has a handicap pass but there’s no place to park, always full, and even if there was a place I don’t have a blue tag so I can’t park there. He’s been walking with my wife about 100 feet for access as I find the best place to drop them, then I go search for a spot to park in the red lot. Getting out poses other problems.

Then there’s the security people (many of them walking around the building smoking) blocking the entry ramps, Can be a ‘lovely’ walk on a cold, rainy day all around the Convo to the front. The intent I guess is to make it more difficult for the terrorists lurking about in the bushes to sneak in. But at the women’s games, there is no security and no barriers and it’s fine for attendees to enter any entry ramp. Safety apparently doesn’t matter for the women.

Inside the convo issues

The volume thing is a problem. I’ve seen well over 100 decibels with the guy holding the mic. on the court. There’s a hearing safety issue here and I’ll leave it there as others have stated the problem above.

I swear half the people around me hope the opponents score so they can sit down. And it usually doesn’t take too long! It’s like rewarding the opponent’s basket .Makes no sense to me. And goading us to stand? I sit.

We are in the dark ages with the gimmicks used during timeouts if you check out other venues. They are often an embarrassment. One of these days a little kid running with big men’s pants and shoes is going to trip and bust something. And why do they always have to have little kids winning and losing? Over the years I’ve seen a few kids crying or close to it, or looking embarrassed as they exit. Just for a difference, can’t we have the crowd clap individually for each one and leave it there? Does it always have to be who’s better? And who can name the most farm animals? e-i-e-i-o. Ok, I’ll stop.

If I had the time, I'd search other message boards to see how many others have people whining 65+ posts long about it being too loud at an indoor sporting event, or complaining every week about the choice in music.

For some who are complaining, when is the last time you went somewhere besides The Convo? Ohio State, Cincinnati, Dayton, Xavier, Akron (according to Mr. McKinney) ALL are louder that OUr experience.

Go to Cincinnati, and the music selection is, well, more progressive that we have, and just as loud, though maybe more balanced throughout the building. Go to Dayton, and there is a nice blend of pep band and "piped in music". No offense folks, I know some of you donate a ton of money, but the atmosphere for college basketball is made by students, as evidenced by the lack of them this year. Atmosphere made by students also needs to, at least to some degree, cater to students. That includes their choices in music and volume of music. If you want students to show up and have fun and create that atmosphere we're all missing this year, deal with the "piped in music" and embrace a little rowdier environment.

I'll get off your lawns now.

I think I've discovered the disconnect - volume versus quality of that volume. The 110 and the speakers are only a few dBs apart but what comes out of those speakers - the voice of the promotions guy/gal or music from the sound board is vastly different from an accomplished band. Turning down the volume (Lou logs in around 90db and is fine) would solve the problem of a problematic sound system.
My posts were laced with very heavy sarcasm, but here is the point I was making: "quality" of music is subjective for each person while "volume" is much more easily quantified across the board.
Those are two entirely different debates.

There are a number of factors causing this that have been discussed on this board... Whatever the causes, the result is an empty lower bowl which KILLS the overall atmosphere in the Convo.

Pack the lower bowl first and worry about everything else later.

Ask not what Ohio Basketball can do for you, ask what you can do for Ohio Basketball.

Bring some folks to the the CMU game with you.

Never said a word about the quality of the music - I stated quality of volume. Even a song you like played on a Kenner Close and Play will sound like crap. It's the quality of the sound that is a problem not the song.

This board is kind of like Yelp or Trip Advisor in this thread - people talking about their "meal." And yes, I've been to Akron, Kent, BG, Toledo, VMI, Cleveland, and MSG in the last few years not to mention more concerts than you can count (just bought two tickets to the Indigo Girls at Stuart's Opera House in April this morning). Each location other than Akron provides a far superior fan experience than the Convo.

Well hopefully the quality will be fixed with the new scoreboard. There is supposedly an enhancement in the sound along with this project. Maybe they won't have to jack up the volume as loud with better equipment.

One of things I noticed when I was at the season opener in November was not just the volume, but distortion.

That could be in part because the Convo was pretty much empty.

I know when I worked concerts at the Convo sound "bouncing" in the empty building was an issue at bands' sound checks.
