If I had the time, I'd search other message boards to see how many others have people whining 65+ posts long about it being too loud at an indoor sporting event, or complaining every week about the choice in music.

For some who are complaining, when is the last time you went somewhere besides The Convo? Ohio State, Cincinnati, Dayton, Xavier, Akron (according to Mr. McKinney) ALL are louder that OUr experience.

Go to Cincinnati, and the music selection is, well, more progressive that we have, and just as loud, though maybe more balanced throughout the building. Go to Dayton, and there is a nice blend of pep band and "piped in music". No offense folks, I know some of you donate a ton of money, but the atmosphere for college basketball is made by students, as evidenced by the lack of them this year. Atmosphere made by students also needs to, at least to some degree, cater to students. That includes their choices in music and volume of music. If you want students to show up and have fun and create that atmosphere we're all missing this year, deal with the "piped in music" and embrace a little rowdier environment.

I'll get off your lawns now.

Tough to compete with high school basketball. It's a shame the MAC forces us to play on Tuesdays and Fridays. That wouldn't help with student attendance, but playing on a non-high school night would help with townie attendance.

I mentioned this last year and got slayed by many who say that "true" fans would choose OHIO over the local H.S. game. Simply not true.

Maybe the "true" fans will, but we need the casual fans at the games too. My dad, for example, chooses high school basketball games because of the personal connection he has with the kids. I could rattle off several people I know that choose high school over college, but if they were played on different nights, they'd probably attend 50-75% of Ohio home games.

Speaking of the "personal connection" is it possible for our Bobcat athletes to make more public appearances? I understand the rigor of being a student athlete, but I think seeing more of the Bobcats in the community would entice people to follow the team more.

In a smaller college town like Athens, it's an issue, especially considering that many of the people that support HS basketball also come to The Convo. I guess my question/comment goes something like this:

Is this something that's an issue for ALL of the conference? If it is, why not go back to Wednesday's? I know part of the reason that the midweek game was moved to Tuesday is the Friday night TV games. That's fine - move those games where travel is an issue account for Friday to Tuesday. Leave the rest on Wednesday. Another thought - I know I've said it before - it's not acceptable in my mind to schedule a Friday night non-conference game at home. HS basketball is one good reason, but the obvious loss of revenue from not having Saturday games has to be huge.

I don't know to what extent Ohio Athletics works with the community in and near Athens. In my mind, I'd be offering cheap/free tickets to high schools within an hour drive to Athens on Saturdays in November and December. Get people coming when they're young. Draw a 75 mile radius wall around Athens an push it as "Bobcat Country". It just doesn't feel like OU Athletics, OU in general, and the communities around them are often working together. Maybe I'm wrong.

To that same tune, I'd be sending emails to Alumni within 90-100 miles offering $5 upper level seats for those same games. For every single game. It sometimes seems as if it was taken for granted that "The Best Fans in the MAC" would always turn out in large numbers.

I'm no genius, but I know the popularity of high school basketball in NE Ohio, so I'm sure Akron and Kent would also say it's a problem.

Why not go back to Wednesday's?
I can only guess that TV money is the reason. As folks can tell by my posts, I go back and forth from being really frustrated at the lack of fans at games to realizing the MAC doesn't care as long as TV money is rolling in, so why should I care....

Some strong ideas here, OUC, and I know that in Dublin Ohio athletics has done ticket giveaways like you suggest.

Also, re: television -- the Horizon League does travel partners format with a Thursday/Saturday, Friday/Sunday format. I wonder if the MAC has considered a similar approach where we could do Wednesday/Friday? Seems easy to do with the East -- Akron/Kent, Buffalo/Ohio and Miami/BG as partners. Toledo/EMU, CMU/WMU and Ball/Northern as partners.

Good thoughts Joe. To your point, I guess I don't understand why all of the MAC needs to be married to only Tuesday nights? They could do, for example, the road trip Ohio takes to Michigan, on Thursday night/Saturday afternoon.

The NCAA would have an issue with the offering of "Cheap and Free" tickets to high schools.

This is a good point and perhaps what was done in Dublin schools had nothing to do with the athletics department at Ohio. I know they weren't distributed via the athletics departments in the local schools. But they were available at multiple grade levels -- elementary, middle and high school.

And, from personal experience, I believe that the athletics department takes its compliance responsibilities seriously and errs on the side of caution. That's good.

That is a good point, and kind of a sad one really with regard to the NCAA and some of their "compliance" rules.

Yeah, because no school has ever given stuff away to lure athletes.

Yeah, I see your point, but 4 basketball tickets to one game aren't going to convince a 14-16 year old to come to Ohio to play instead of somewhere else. That, and how many athletes compared to general students are we really talking about? Anyway...your point is still good - this wouldn't fit in the guide lines of NCAA Compliance.
