I was at the Akron game Tuesday, and the volume overall is much higher than the Convos. They do a better job planning and executing game atmosphere stuff.
What was your impression of the new video boards in the JAR?

I have worn sunglasses in the convo at times recently. Photo-sensitivity is the reason. My alternatives are get a headache from the lights, or get a headache from squinting for long periods of time. For my condition and seat location, the lights are right on the border of uncomfortable -some days I can take it, others not. It can be far worse during women's games where I typically have much better seats. (And you would be right to ask me why I go sit there, then.)

That being said, I don't see the average person having any trouble with the lights around where I normally sit. I've explained all this to them and they say something like, "interesting, I never really noticed the lights."

I guess the punchline is there is nothing wrong with the lights; there is something wrong with me. It's why I wear the sunglasses. No one should have to feel bad for me, or feel compelled to make a motion to have them replaced; it's just a headache for Pete's sake. I can't speak for those other whimps that can't take the lights, however.

The University should create an official policy limiting decibel levels at 110.

First step is putting muzzles on the trumpets to prevent ear damage of the drummers in front of them.

Safety first.
Well played. :)

Here's another Athens Voice that recently appeared in the A News:

Please protect our hearing and vision at the Convo! It’s too loud for kids and other living humans. Decibels often reach 110 that can cause hearing loss and ringing in the ears (tinnitus) for periods longer than one minute, according to the National Institute on Deafness. I wear ear plugs to reduce intensity levels at the Convo (though it makes it hard to engage in conversations) and will continue do so if uncomfortable loudness levels persist. And protect your vision too. The lights are too bright, but wearing a hat or visor (and I’ve even seen people wearing sun glasses) significantly deflects the light and gives a much better view.
Not only is it too loud, but its too bright......INSIDE! I needed a good chuckle this morning. I imagine this person suits up in full football gear to drive their car.
I am actually astonished at our shooting percentage in there. Everytime I went to release a jumper those new spotlights are brighter than hell and right at the release point I went blind everytime. Never fun. As for fans, yes those seats suck when you look up at the right angle.

The lights are great, was a nice addition for broadcast and photo journalist. However, just not for everyone. After being ignored for decades, the department is putting some very nice touches on the old lady.

I'm four rows above the railing that separates platinum and gold tonight, and if this is too loud, the A-News complainer is just weak. It's fine and not 'too loud'. Not even close. The band, that everyone clamors for more of, is TWICE as loud, if not more.

This post is just not true. The band maxed out at 101dB tonight and here is the problem - the guy on the mc and the piped in music. They both topped out at 103 dB. If you want to come down and see for yourself, please do so at the next game. No one is complaining about things being too loud other than the noise coming through the speakers.

What about it is not true? I sat four rows above the railing that separates the gold and platinum. The band was louder than anything else where I sat. None of it was THAT loud.

Edit, using your little phone db measurements to justify your point is fine. Facts are, it ain't that huge of an issue.

I liked the new boards in the JAR. I hope ours end up something like that.

Actually, it not well played at all. No one in this thread has suggested that the 110 is too loud. The comments have all been directed at the canned music coming out of the speakers. I will admit that TO is funny with this post, but it's only because he is beating down a strawman.

The thing is, the 110, within reason, is equally as loud based on my experience this evening.

Not to get all serious, but,at least in drum corps,a lot of members, especially percussion,do use ear plugs to prevent hearing loss.

I know a number of guys who marched who do have hearing issues.

I think I've discovered the disconnect - volume versus quality of that volume. The 110 and the speakers are only a few dBs apart but what comes out of those speakers - the voice of the promotions guy/gal or music from the sound board is vastly different from an accomplished band. Turning down the volume (Lou logs in around 90db and is fine) would solve the problem of a problematic sound system.

I paid attention last night and I didn't think it was too loud at all? I thought Lou and the band was much louder than the music, but nothing bothered me.

The group I work with in Rosemont is sponsored by Etymotic . I have attended numerous lectures on hearing loss in musicians that remind me why hearing loss is permenant. Though my Kawasaki sounds like a flock of angry bees I wear noise reducing ear plugs inside my helmet to combat wind roar and sound while riding

Hearing loss and sound levels are serious business

My decibel meter app never registered above 90-100 range. Most of the time it was much much less

More concerning was all the barely filled lower bowl sections at tip off. Most had 30 or less people in the whole section. (Not counting the lower Swank/Mckinney type seats). Depressing.

If the team were to play better, the crowd noise would drown out the recorded music.

LOL. I’m not happy to post this stuff. Section 117 had 7 people in it at tip off. Seven. All 4 upper bowl sections behind he student section had 3 people in them total. Three. I was so bummed I took pictures of those sections. Then I did a quick count of the twelve 100 level sections I have a good view of. Less than 300 people were in them by my count. Again - that’s not the lower pull out seats. Those were full and the student section was full due to ROTC and the band. But Friday night 6:30PM basketball is just a plain old bad idea. I didn’t alert any old OU buddies or family/friends that we were on national TV. Didn’t get one text that someone found the game and was watching. Not one. I’d rather be sitting in the Convo right now. But, I’m watching some nice Saturday college hoops games on TV instead.

Anyway, it was a fun game nonetheless. Our guys played hard d and well but are just a bit undermanned this year.

I just sent Ted a picture of three sections of season ticket holders in the lower bowl. Hopefully he can post them. And speaking of which, what is an easy way to post pictures?

We can say it's a bad idea, and I don't really disagree, but it's not going away when the B1G has two Friday games, and they're basically sold out.

Went up to use restroom late in the 2H and walked by a concession vendor who was counting money. Just to make conversation I simply quipped, "good day?" and they responded that concession sales (and he gave me exact $$ figures) were down over 60% compared to previous seasons. How accurate that was I don't know, but he said things were bad and he was very discouraged.

Seems like just yesterday I was trying to get season tickets for friends in my section and they were sold out. Nothing available and on a waiting list. I've heard people on here mention outside lighting, pricing, games on TV, kids having alternatives, game times, score boards, speaker volumes, concourse decorations--and I don't doubt all those play some role. But to me, the bottom line is the product on the court. Turn on the TV and you'll see that the programs that have a quality product have customers and buzz. The Convo didn't suddenly fall off the face of the map. One thing I do think is true is that customers are fickle and have a short memory. Blame what you want to make you feel good and make any excuse you'd like (like suddenly the outdoor lighting is bad, suddenly kids have other recreation alternatives, or were Carter, a couple Freshman we've never seen play and a healthy hip away from relevance), but in my circle the word is out and has been out that the product is not what it used to be and not one to build your calendar around. I'm still coming, but those around me aren't following suite as regularly.

Unfortunately it's not just W & L, but most likely there's a direct correlation between down seasons, ticket sales, vendor sales, sponsorships and donations.
