SHREVEPORT, La. – Ohio will take on Louisiana-Monroe in the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl at 2 p.m. Dec. 28 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La.

It is the fourth straight bowl game for the Bobcats, who are one of a record seven Mid-American Conference teams to qualify for the postseason.

"The Ohio University football program is extremely excited for the opportunity to play in the Independence Bowl," coach Frank Solich said in a university press release. "For over 25 years, this has been one of the premier bowl games in the country and I couldn't be happier for our team. Louisiana-Monroe has had a very good season and we’re certain that this game will be a great matchup."

Ohio (8-4) is playing in its fourth straight bowl game, its fifth in the last six years and its seventh overall. Last year, the Bobcats earned their first-ever postseason win by beating Utah State, 24-23, in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

“We are so excited for this wonderful opportunity to play in the Independence Bowl,” Ohio University Athletics Director Jim Schaus said. “I’ve been to this bowl several times and it will be a great experience for our student-athletes and fans. With this being our fourth-consecutive bowl game this shows that our football program is continuing to build toward a successful future.”

Louisiana-Monroe (8-4) is playing in a bowl game for the first time in school history. The Warhawks finished tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference with a 6-2 league mark.

Led by quarterback Colton Browning, Louisiana-Monroe has averaged 35.5 points and 442.7 yards per game.

“These are two dynamic football teams that will be a great addition to the long list of great teams that have played in the Independence Bowl,” Independence Bowl chairman Jack Andres said.

For the first time in history, a MAC school earned a spot a Bowl Championship Series game. Northern Illinois (12-1) finished 15th in the BCS standings, earning an automatic spot and will face Florida State (11-2) in the Orange Bowl at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 1.

Other MAC bowl games include:

Kent State (11-2) vs. Arkansas State (9-3) in the GoDaddy.com Bowl at 9 p.m. Jan. 6.

Bowling Green (8-4) vs. San Jose State (10-2) in the Military Bowl at 3 p.m. Dec. 27.

Central Michigan (6-6) vs. Western Kentucky (7-5) in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at 3 p.m. Dec. 27.

Ball State (9-3) vs. Central Florida (9-4) in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21.

Toledo (9-3) vs. Utah State (10-2) in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 15.

“I am extremely proud of the student-athletes, coaches and fans at our seven MAC member institutions that have received bowl invitations and our collective accomplishments as a conference this season,” Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said. “The commitment of the student-athletes to excel has earned them this opportunity. I am very excited for our bowl lineup."

With 72 teams eligible for bowls, two teams were left out: Louisiana Tech (9-3), which reportedly passed on the Independence Bowl, and Middle Tennessee (8-4).
