YPSILANTI, Mich. – Ohio scored three third-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 30-17 victory – the 500th in the program’s history – against Eastern Michigan at Rynearson Stadium on Saturday.
Vince Davidson scored three touchdowns, including the first two of the third quarter less than two minutes apart after the Bobcats and Eagles played to a 10-all halftime tie.
Riley Dunlop scored on a wide receiver reverse with 24 seconds left in the third quarter, giving the Bobcats a 30-10 advantage.
It was the 17th straight loss for the Eagles, who had a chance to gain the lead in the second half after Dwayne Priest busted a 52-yard run up the middle.
But he was run down by Julian Posey at the Ohio 26-yard line, and from there, the defense of Ohio (2-3, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) came through with a pair of sacks that kept Eastern Michigan off the board.
Boo Jackson, who finished the day 15 of 24 for 218 yards, completed passes of 21 and 24 yards to set up a Davidson 7-yard run that gave the Bobcats the lead for good.
After Ohio forced a three-and-out, Davidson was left wide open along the sideline and ran away for a 61-yard touchdown reception.
The Bobcats were in business for another touchdown when Jackson fumbled, but the Eagles failed to capitalize. Ohio stopped Eastern Michigan on a fake punt.
Ohio turned to some trickery of its own, getting 23 yards on a Steven Goulet end-around, and on the very next play, Dunlop scored from 18 yards out by diving for the pylon on a similar play.
Eastern Michigan (0-5, 0-3 MAC) answered back with a Priest one-yard touchdown run that was set up by a 49-yard completion from Alex Gillett to Trey Hunter, but the Eagles were shut down the rest of the game.
Davidson, who had 40 yards rushing on 11 carries, scored his first touchdown early in the second quarter on a two-yard run to give the Bobcats a 10-7 lead.
Ohio also led 3-0 on Matt Weller’s 49-yard field goal on the game’s first drive, but Eastern Michigan gained its only lead of the game with a touchdown on its first offensive possession.
The Bobcats seemed to force a three-and-out, but the Eagles executed a fake punt with a direct snap to Ben Thayer, who ran 32 yards up the middle of the field. The Eagles cashed in on a nine-yard pass from Gillett to Kiszman Thomas.
Sean Graham added a 25-yard field goal for the Eagles with 37 seconds left before halftime.
Ohio had a season-best offensive performance with 412 yards.
Jackson, who played the whole game at quarterback, led Ohio on the ground with 60 yards on 13 carries. Ryan Boykin had 45 yards on six carries in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats attempted to run out the clock.
LaVon Brazill, who like Boykin was returning from an injury after missing the last two games, was the Bobcats’ top receiver with 46 yards on five catches.
Priest led Eastern Michigan by gaining 117 yards on 19 carries, while Gillett was 15 of 30 for 208 yards with one interception. Thomas had five receptions for 57 yards.
After playing three straight road games, the Bobcats return home next Saturday for a 2 p.m. game against Bowling Green.
