ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio racked up almost 500 yards of offense to provide a happy homecoming for fans at Peden Stadium on Saturday in a 38-10 victory against Akron.
Boo Jackson and Terrence McCrae moved to the top of the Ohio record book for career touchdown passes and receptions, respectively, and Jackson added two rushing touchdowns.
The Bobcats (4-3, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) rolled to points on their first four possessions while the Zips did not attain a first down until their fifth possession.
"I think we showed flashes of really good football, but there were moments where we didn't operate with as much efficiency as we'd like and those are always frustrating,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said. “We're out there trying to put together four quarters.”
Jackson scored on a one-yard run on Ohio’s first possession, and McCrae, who finished with six catches for 107 yards, caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Riley Dunlop for a 14-0 lead.
Ohio’s third possession resulted in a Matt Weller 42-yard field goal, and McCrae’s seven-yard touchdown pass from Jackson less than two minutes into the second quarter set a milestone for both players.
McCrae’s touchdown catch was the 16th of his career, passing Todd Snyder for first place all-time in Ohio history. It also was the 29th passing touchdown of Jackson’s Ohio career, matching the all-time record of 29 by Cleve Bryant.
“I don't feel like it's clicked fully yet,” McCrae said. “Just the thought of it, and what it means to the university, to me, it's humbling. It's really humbling.”
The Bobcats got their second one-yard touchdown run from Jackson in the third quarter, and Phil Bates scored on a 33-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Akron (0-7, 0-3 MAC) score of the first half came on a 39-yard Igor Iveljic field goal just before halftime that made the score 24-3 at the break.
The Zips’ touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a Matt Rodgers three-yard touchdown pass to Austin Bailey.
“We got taken to the woodshed today in every phase of the game,” Akron coach Rob Ianello said. “We didn't play well on offense. I don't think we played well on defense, and we didn't play very well on special teams. I didn't see anything we did well out here today.”
Jackson completed 14 of 21 passes for 161 yards with one interception and also caught a 42-yard pass on Bates’ only pass attempt. Bates had a team-leading 84 yards on nine carries.
Ten different players caught Ohio’s 16 pass completions in the game.
Akron starting quarterback Patrick Nicely was 16 of 29 for 159 yards with two interceptions, including the fifth of the season by Donovan Fletcher. The Zips had just 72 yards rushing.
Ohio did not punt in the game, but did convert a fake punt with a 27-yard Paul Hershey run.
First place in the MAC East is on the line when Ohio travels to Miami for its homecoming game at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
