Defense Shines in Green and White Game

The Ohio Defense (Green) used a touchdown and four turnovers to post a 57-33 win over the Offense (White) in the annual Green and White Game at Peden Stadium Saturday afternoon. S Chip Cox scored the Defense's touchdown after he picked off a Ryan Hawk pass that bounced off WR Scott Mayle and raced 62 yards to paydirt. The Defense's speed off the ends was too much for a line hit hard by graduation and injury. Four offensive linemen watched the game in street clothes. Use of the option was also limited as the scrimmage did not allow hits on the quarterback instead counting him down when he was touched.

In the scoring system used, the offense received points for a touchdown (6), field goal (3) and first down (1). The defense got points for a touchdown (6), turnover (5), blocked field goal or three-and-out stand (2) and a missed field goal or third-down stop (1).

The Defense got 26 of its points off turnovers. ILB Dennis Chukwuemeka started the scoring when he picked off a pass on the game's first possession. OLB Tyler Russ later blitzed through and actually took a handoff from QB Fred Ray, DE Kevin Carberry hopped on a Hawk fumble and Cox grabbed his pick-six.

Ryan Hawk was in the middle of some of the game's biggest plays. In addition to throwing the Cox interception, Hawk hooked up with a streaking Anthony Hackett for a 31-yard TD strike. In perhaps the best play of the game, he completed a 49-yard pass to Scott Mayle who made a nice, diving grab. Hawk finished the day with 209 yards and one touchdown on 11-of-22 passing. Fred Ray was 11-for-20 passing for 64 yards. HB Ray Huston led all rushers with 20 yards on six carries.
