Kentucky backup quarterback Shane Boyd proved to be the difference as he helped his team to a 35-14 win over Ohio Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. Boyd, in relief of ineffective starter Jared Lorenzen, ran for two scores, threw for one and caught one. The Bobcats (2-5 Overall, 1-2 MAC) again were forced to go with true freshman Austen Everson at quarterback. Everson, who shined last week against UCF, had a tougher time against a strong Kentucky defense. He threw for 147 yards with a touchdown and interception but ran for just 28 yards on 21 carries and fumbles twice.

Ohio jumped in front of Kentucky (3-4, 0-3 SEC) after a Pete Brately sack forced a Lorenzen fumble that Tyler Russ recovered on the UK seven. Brad Young ran it in on the next play and the Bobcats were up 7-0 with 10:28 left in the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter, a partially blocked Matt Miller punt would give UK the ball on the Ohio 27. Boyd capped a 6-play drive with an 8-yard run and the two teams would go to half tied at 7-7.

An Everson fumble on Ohio's first possession of the second half gave the Wildcats the ball on Ohio's 12-yard line. Boyd ran for a TD on the next play to put his team up 14-7. On the next UK possession, Boyd connected with Tommy Cook on a flea flicker to put Kentucky up 21-7 with 9:29 left in the third period. The Bobcats would get back within striking distance when Everson hit Ray Huston with a 58-yard TD pass down the middle of the field to cut the deficit to 21-14.

Lorenzen would return at quarterback and deal the Bobcats a lethal blow. He hit Boyd on a middle screen that went for 30 yards and a score to put Kentucky up 28-14 with 10:07 to play. Lorenzen's 16-yard TD strike to Derek Abney put them up 35-14. Ohio's last gasp was extinguished when the Wildcats' Mike Williams picked off an Everson pass on the UK 1-yard line.

For the game, Boyd had 85 yards on 10 carries and was 3-of-9 passing for 54 yards. Lorenzen hit on 8 of his 14 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Brad Young led Ohio rushing with 38 yards on 10 carries. Fred Ray and Stafford Owens both missed their second straight game due to injury.
