Ohio recorded its first home shutout since 1997 as it blanked UCF 28-0 on Homecoming Saturday afternoon in Peden Stadium. On a day when many familiar faces returned to Athens it was a new face that led the Bobcats (2-4 Overall, 1-2 MAC). True freshman quarterback Austen Everson, starting for the injured Fred Ray and Ryan Hawk, ran for 3 TD's and passed for another to account for all of Ohio's scoring. For the game, the 6-2, 220-pounder from Brentwood, Tennessee ran for 130 yards on 21 carries and completed all 4 pass attempts for 118 yards.
The Ohio defense was equally impressive shutting the Knights (2-4, 1-2) out for the first time since 1984 (209 games) and holding them to just 98 yards of total offense. A week after the Cats put the clamps on Northern Illinois' Heisman candidate Michael Turner they allowed UCF -6 yards rushing on 22 attempts. OU dominated in time of possession as well controlling the ball for 39:34.
The Everson-directed offense came out as hot as the 80-degree temperatures scoring on its first three possessions. Everson's first college pass hit Brad Young who took it 57 yards to put Ohio up 7-0. Dion Byrum's 44-yard punt return set up the next score giving the Bobcats the ball on the UCF 35. Eight plays later, Everson would push in from the one to make it 14-0. It was Everson again, this time breaking loose for a 57-yard TD run, that put the Cats up 21-0 with 2:15 still left in the first quarter. The freshman QB would wrap up the scoring on a one-yard plunge in the 3rd quarter to make the final 28-0.
