A furious second-half comeback led UConn over Ohio 37-19 Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies (2-2) scored 31 straight points to overcome a 13-point Bobcat (0-4) lead. Despite the losing effort, senior running back Chad Brinker rushed for 159 yards putting him over the 2,000-yard mark for his career.
Ohio's special teams came up with a big play early as a partial punt block by Tony Collette put the Bobcats at the UConn 36-yard line at the 8:13 mark of the opening period. A seven-play, 36-yard drive capped off by a Chad Brinker 2-yard plunge put Ohio up 7-0. After a Huskie field goal Brinker would again find the end zone, this time on a 54-yard scamper that gave the Bobcats a 13-3 lead with 13:40 left in the half. UConn's Mark Hickok's second field goal of the half made the score 13-6 at the intermission.
OU took the second half kick and drove 55 yards in nine plays to set up a Kevin Kerr 32-yard field goal. On the next possession, Kerr would convert from 24 yards after Ohio's drive stalled on the UConn 6-yard line. The scoreboard showed Ohio up 19-6 with 5:46 left in the third quarter but the Cats' inability to get touchdowns off their second-half scoring drives would come back to haunt as the UConn offense would ignite.
It started when Huskie QB Dan Orlovsky connected with Jason Williams on a 26-yard TD pass capping a drive that saw UConn go 80 yards in three plays and just 1:06. Orlovsky would then score on a quarterback keep to put the Huskies up 20-19 with 14:05 left in the game. After a Dontrell Jackson interception, Terry Caulley's 4-yard touchdown run made it 27-19. Caulley would later run 27 yards through poor Bobcat tackling for a score that made the final 37-19.
Orlovsky would finish 15-for-29 with 224 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Caulley became the first 100-yard rusher against the Bobcats this season with 117 yards on 26 carries. For Ohio, Chad Brinker had 42 receiving yards and two touchdowns to go with his 159 yards on the ground. Quarterback Dontrell Jackson completed 11 of 19 passes for 95 yards but threw two costly interceptions late in the game.
Brian Knorr's squad looks to break their 10-game losing streak next Saturday night at Peden Stadium against Buffalo.
