ATHENS, Ohio – For the second straight game, Ohio built a big halftime lead and cruised to victory, defeating Wofford, 73-50, on Sunday afternoon in The Convo.
The Bobcats (3-0) shot 57.4 percent while holding the Terriers to 30.0 percent shooting.
Reggie Keely scored 16 points and D.J. Cooper knocked down 5 of 7 shots and finished with 15 points, but only had two assists two days after passing out 14 in a defeat of UNCW. Nick Kellogg had 10 points and Ivo Baltic scored nine points.
Karl Cochran finished with 14 points and Indiana Faithfull scored 12 points for Wofford (1-3).
Ohio was cold offensively at the start and Wofford hung close with the game tied at 8 until a Nick Kellogg 3-pointer with 11:39 remaining in the first half put the Bobcats up for good.
“From that point on, I just thought we played a smart basketball game on the defensive end of the floor,” Ohio coach Jim Christian said. “When you hold somebody to 30 percent shooting from the floor, that’s pretty good defense.”
It was part of a 9-0 run, capped by a steal and layup by Cooper that made it 17-8.
After Faithfull knocked down a 3-pointer, Kellogg had a steal and layup that was the first of nine more points in a row for the Bobcats. Walter Offutt’s jumper at the 4:56 mark made it 28-13. In all, it was an 18-3 Ohio run.
“We know if we get stops, we can get out and run,” Cooper said.
The Bobcats took a 34-16 lead into the half and pushed their lead to as much as 25, 44-19, on a Jon Smith dunk with 15:54 remaining. The differential was never less than 20 points after that, even as Ohio’s starters gave way to the bench.
After sitting out Friday with a knee injury, T.J. Hall saw time in the closing minutes, scoring four points and grabbing a pair of rebounds.
“We wanted to get T.J. some minutes to just play through fatigue,” Christian said. “He hasn’t done anything in four or five days. … He hasn’ t played in five days so he was tired. He was just starting to get back to a good rhythm when he got hurt.”
After two good rebounding games, the Bobcats gave up 12 offensive rebounds and had only four of their own. They also had a season-high 17 turnovers while forcing 21.
“A lot of (the turnovers) were unforced – trying to make a play or didn’t see the right play at times, which happens,” Christian said. “… This is the third game in a row where we’ve shot over 50 percent. I told them at the timeouts, let’s just get shots at the basket.”
Ohio will play its third game in five days when it hosts Hampton at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
