ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio basketball team has added three players in the last week.
The Bobcats reported have added center Kenny Belton as a walk-on to this fall’s roster and have received verbal commitments from shooting guard Caris LeVert in their 2012 recruiting class and center Anthony Allen in their 2013 class.
Belton, a former scholarship player at Cincinnati, has not played in more than three years because of a spinal injury.
He was last listed as 6-8 and 255 pounds, but his weight is now listed at 280 pounds on Ohio’s roster.
The native of Greensboro, N.C., played in 21 games as a freshman for the Bearcats during the 2007-08 season, averaging 1.6 points and 1.0 rebounds in 6.7 minutes per game.
His injury was once thought to be career-ending, but he continued his education at Cincinnati, recently graduating.
Belton came out of high school as a top 200 player and originally committed to Maryland, before signing with the Bearcats.
He will have one year of eligibility remaining, with the possibility of a second year possible if he is granted a medical hardship exception.
LeVert, a 6-4 shooting guard from Pickerington Central High School, is the first player to commit in the Bobcats’ class of 2012.
ESPN’s recruiting database ranks LeVert as an 87, listing him as the 59th-best player at his position. It calls him an “excellent shooter,” but says he needs to work on his strength to improve his slashing ability.
The departure of Joe Mitchell, a junior college transfer who was supposed to begin with the Bobcats this season, opened up a spot for LeVert.
Ohio also will have another scholarship available for the class if regains the one it lost in May for failing to meet NCAA academic progress report minimums.
Allen, a 7-0, 240-pound center from Bridgeport, Conn., is the Bobcats’ second commitment for the recruiting class of 2013.
Currently enrolled at the College of Southern Idaho, he is expected to play there for this year and next because he did not qualify academically for the NCAA out of high school.
Evan Bradds, a 6-6, 195-pound small forward from Jamestown, was Ohio’s first commitment for the class of 2013.
The Bobcats are expected to have four scholarships available in total for the class of 2013, with D.J. Cooper, Walter Offutt, Ivo Baltic and Reggie Keely on pace to play out their eligibility at the end of the 2012-13 season.
