Ohio season comes to end with loss at ETSU
Bobcats rally for late lead, but Bucs pull away in final minutes

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Ohio rallied from an 11-point second half deficit, but East Tennessee State scored 12 of the final 14 points in the last two minutes to pull out an 82-73 victory in the quarterfinals of the College Insider.com Postseason Tournament in Johnson City, Tenn.
DeVaughn Washington closed out his career with a 21-point, seven-rebound effort to lead the Bobcats (19-16). Freshman Nick Kellogg knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, and Tommy Freeman scored 11 points in his final game.
Justin Tubbs scored 19 of his 27 points in the first half as East Tennessee built an eight-point lead at the break. Mike Smith posted a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Adam Sollazzo had 11 points and seven boards for the Bucs (24-11).
D.J. Cooper, who had nine points and five assists, connected on a 3-pointer with 2:17 remaining to give Ohio a 71-70 advantage, but Sollazzo answered with a free throw-line jumper to quickly put East Tennessee back on top.
After a defender fell down, Freeman had a wide-open look at a 3-pointer, but it was off the mark. He was just 2 of 7 from the outside.
Mike Smith connected for a basket to put the Bucs up by three, and Cooper missed a long step-back triple try with 52 seconds left.
Smith made two free throws to make it a five-point game, but T.J. Hall answered with a jumper from the corner, but it was ruled a 2-pointer, and Smith essentially closed it out at the foul line by making two more free throws.
The Bobcats trailed 61-50 on two Micah Williams free throws with 10:20 remaining in the game, but they fought back.
A Freeman 3-pointer got Ohio to within 62-58 at the 7:27 mark, and he hit another to get the Bobcats within three with 5:55 to go.
Later, a Kellogg trey made it 69-66, and after a J.C. Ward free throw, Cooper got a short jumper in the lane to fall to get within two. After a Bucs miss, the Bobcats took their only lead of the second half.
The Bobcats started the game strong, taking a 9-3 lead with a pair of Ivo Baltic baskets included, but East Tennessee took over after that, scoring 12 straight points.
Hall ended the run with a 3-pointer, but the Bucs came back with another six in a row for a 21-12 advantage, and Baltic picked up his third foul with 9:33 left in the first half.
Tubbs threw down a dunk with 2:20 left to put the Bucs on top by 10, and they went up 11 with 1:02 remaining on the first-half clock.
Kellogg knocked down a 3-pointer, and Washington added a layup, but Tubbs got to the hoop for a layup to close out the first 20 minutes with East Tennessee leading 43-35.
Tubbs went 7 of 11 from 3-point range, and the Bucs shot 52.9 percent overall. They made 21 of 29 free throw attempts.
The Bobcats made just 39 percent of their shots, but stroked 9 of 22 3-pointers, including 6 of 12 in the second half, and 18 of 21 free throws. Ohio held a 34-31 rebounding advantage and had a 15-1 advantage in second-chance points.
It was the ends of the careers of starters Washington and Freeman, fifth-year senior Asown Sayles and walk-on senior Adetunji Adedipe.
East Tennessee advances to the semifinals of the CIT to take on Iona, a 78-63 winner against Buffalo on Tuesday night. The Gaels and the Bucs will play Saturday for chance to compete in next Wednesday’s championship game.
