PORTLAND, Ore. – D.J. Cooper posted a triple-double and the Ohio men’s basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 72-54 victory against Portland at the Chiles Center on Saturday night.
Cooper finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals, while Jon Smith came up just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Walter Offutt scored 12 points and Ricardo Johnson finished with 10.
Ryan Nicholas and Kevin Bailey scored 13 points apiece to lead the Pilots (3-7).
Ohio (7-1) led 38-35 at halftime and Portland got to within one with the opening points of the second half, but a 9-1 run pushed the lead to nine points, with an Ivo Baltic jumper making it 47-38 with 14:26 remaining.
The Pilots were within seven at 50-43 when the Bobcats scored seven consecutive points to go up 14 on a Smith layup with 9:02 remaining.
Tim Douglas hit a 3-pointer to cut Portland’s deficit to single digits with less than six minutes to go, but that was as close as it got the rest of the game.
While Ohio led most of the first half, Portland tied the score on several occasions, the last at 27 on a pair of Douglas three throws at the 3:18 mark. It then continued its 7-0 run with a Thomas Van Der Mas layup and Riley Tanner 3-pointer for a 32-27 lead.
Ohio, though, ran off 11 straight points before halftime, including five consecutive points by Johnson after a Kellogg 3-pointer. Cooper added a three-point play before Tanner ended the run with a triple before the half to make it a three-point game.
After shooting 42.9 percent in the first half, Portland made just 29.2 percent of its shots in the second half to finish at 36.5 percent in the game. Ohio made 43.1 percent of its field goal tries in the game.
