As I mentioned elsewhere, I was good friends with some of the bouncers at the Longbranch back in the early '70s and never knew any of them to take a disturbance outside.  They would take them as far as the front door and leave it at that. 


The Longbranch was a great bar in the early 70's!!  I say no more for fear of being deleted.

Was Kitty's Long Branch Saloon the bar down the alley from the old theatre that's now Chipotle?

Old Athens bars would make a great topic over on the Siberian thread area.

I do not recall Longbranch?  Rosie's Phase I and Bojangles were in that area.  Bojangles was a classic.  My roommate was so proud of earning his around the World T Shirt.  I always thought the toughest bar was the Club 33.  I always felt safe there but did witness a few fights; though nothing as violent as the history that has become Courtside.

Joe, are you thinking of Mug-a-Margarita?

Perhaps SBH or cc cat can help out. If I'm remembering correctly, and I rarely do on this subject, I sorta recall some very cheap buckets of beer.

Perhaps SBH or cc cat can help out. If I'm remembering correctly, and I rarely do on this subject, I sorta recall some very cheap buckets of beer.


Yeah, Mug and Margarita.  You could get a bucket of beer (not a bucket with 6 bottles in it, but a real bucket filled with draft beer) and sit on the balcony over the alley.  To keep people from throwing things or jumping off the balcony, it was enclosed in chicken wire.  Now that place had some atmosphere.

Spent many a drunkin Sunday evening in there.

They used to have a helluva deal on buckets on Sunday.....think $4-5 dollars.

The longbranch was indeed down the alley.  I remember vividly exiting the side door of the theatre, having it close and lock behind us, and getting blasted in the ass by rubber bullets as we ran like Hell!!  Those things left terrible welts!

You sir are correct...Mug and Margarita's and the Longbranch were on in the same. Longbranch transitioned to the M&M when it became evident that the Urban Cowboy trend ran its course.(thankfully!) Personally I favored Genny Pounders at the Nickelodeon while playing fetch with the house dog(Golden Retriever?)

That dog was Scrimshaw and belonged to RD if my mind is working.  Stop by Ski's shop; he has a t-shirt with most of the dead bars listed.

((My band was playing the Nick the night the Challenger exploded--Sines still owes me $30 for that gig.))

As a former bartender I can say that Ski was my least favorite happy hour attendee ever.  Literally might have given me $3 in tips in my 2 years bartending.  Just an awful, awful bar patron.

Long Branch memory:

Carrying my roommate's father out of the place on Dad's weekend.  It surely wasn't the 3.2 beer, was it?

They also had an open staircase and a balcony if memory serves.  Amazing that no one broke their neck in that place.

I went to OU from 1972 thru 1975 and spent most of my time at the Long Branch Saloon in the alley. Dave Altier, a great guy owned the bar. Occasionally, the Boss Grover would DJ at the bar. At Dave's request, I used to perform a skit when Chuck Berry's My Ding A Ling was played. It was hilarious and often brought a standing ovation. Don't forget if you ever swim in Turtle Creek, be careful of those snappers at your feet, while swimming and holding both hands on My Ding A Ling.

  It was the Hole in the Wall sub shop and, back in the day when I was racing in SCCA, Ed would do a bit of sponsorship with the "best buns in Athens" logo on the back of the MG.
   He's still doing the Boss Groover gig now from Philadelphia. Here's the link:
