Surprised nobody has mentioned The Greenery yet.

or Lucky's.
Hey, Mr. Sweet Hook Shot, I mentioned The Tavern, which was in the same location as the Greenery, just a few decades earlier. So, I should get half credit, or something. ;-)

I was thinking The Tavern was on Union, but i must have been confusing it with The Graduate? or The Town House? Do I have that right?

The Town House was on Union. I think where Jackie O's now is located, or very close. I don't remember too clearly where The Graduate was, but I think it was on the upper part of Court Street. I'm sure someone will remember that one clearly.

In it's era, Night Court was the best bar in Athens, in my opinion, until it closed. I might not have been a Cat's Eye regular if that place had stayed open.

Its funny,I was at O.U in the mid 70's.

Back then we could only get 3.2 beer.

Our favorite bar(s) uptown was whoever had the smallest crowd.

I can't remember the name of any specific place we went to.

If I remember correctly, uptown bars were closed on Sunday.
So a lot of guys would head out 33.
In fact I believe one bar was called Club 33.

Others that I haven't seen mentioned:
Gee Willickers
Hanger 5
McSweeney's
CJ's (I think that was the name)

Two great things about Night Court were its unique location (away from any other bar) and the fact that it was "two bars in one" because the downstairs was a chill lounge while the upstairs was more of a college bar.

I recall(fuzzy) that Club 33 was up Rte 13 in Chauncey...or maybe Glouster?

Dean's Midway was on 33. A good place to catch Mark Markham & the Bogus Bros.

Count me in the group that loved Night Court. I really liked the scene in there during Winter and Summer breaks. Maybe I am the only one that admits it, but I had a lot of fun at The Greenery from age 18-20.9. After 21, my rotation was Junction on Thursdays for Quad Night, West End Tavern to start Friday nights (free wings intended for bikers, but they were free so why not?), then later on Friday & Saturday nights usually at The Pub or CI. The Cat's Den was close to my place and very underrated among students, but you had to know a local or two to feel welcome in there. My liver is angry at me for even reading this thread.

Club 33 was an institution at OHIO for many, many years. It was located on Rt. 33 (now Rt. 13, or "Old 33") between Athens and Chauncey, a little closer to Athens, on the right hand side of the road as you travel out of Athens. The building is still there, and has been several different things since the Club 33 closed. At one time it was a used car dealership. My late Uncle Russell, who was a student both before and after World War II, spoke fondly of memories of times at Club 33. I believe, if I remember his stories correctly, they used to have a dance floor in the bar. I think he first met one girl friend there that he dated throughout his college career.

The Graduate was on Union just down from The Union, almost across from what was then BBF (Borden Burger Fries) and across from BBF was Haning Hall on Richland.

Surprised no one mentioned Magoos and Igors (on Court St.) although we spent most every night at the CI playing foosball and drinking 25 cent happy hour beers.

McSweeney's later became The Dugout, on the corner across from The Junction on the ground floor.

Loved BBF. However, BBF stood for Burger Boy Food-o-rama. It was bought by Borden and later became Borden Burger.

89cat,

In the 70's when I was on campus it had become Borden Burger Fries (and was owned by Borden). Living on West Green we stumbled by it many nights heading back from uptown.

The Union. When I first returned to campus in the early 90s, I think The Union was the only bar operating under the same name as when I was a student in the mid-60s.

But, do you know what the name of the Union was in 1880? I can actually upload a photo of it back then, which I'll do once someone tells me what business occupied the building, and what the name of that business was.

Contrary to what my kids would tell you, I didn't personally take the photo! ;-)

The wall-bearing, brick construction of this building is one of the reasons it survived the recent fire that destroyed buildings all around it. It sustained damaged, but the infastructure of the building remained intact.

(Hint: It wasn't a bar back then. The building was actually constructed for the function it was serving in the 1880s. I believe it continued to serve this function into the early years of the 20th Century, perhaps up to around the time of WWII, but I'm not sure about the exact date when in transitioned to a bar, or if it was something different in between when it served its original purpose and its becoming a bar.)

I liked Wednesday night because we could get cheap pizza by the slice at Courtside then go to Lucky's and get cheap liquor by the picture.

The Junction is my overall favorite.

My inside sources tell me that Red Room had too many grunts in it and that it was not sailor friendly! ;-)

I remember it well. It was THE place on Sunday nights in the 70s. It was outside the city limits and had Sunday liquor. It was pretty wild. Something out of a roadhouse movie. A lot of the jocks went out there because it was unlikely that a coach would spot you there.

It’s been a week. I’m dying to know the answer.
