I noticed it had been months since Tim had tweeted anything and I assumed it was some sort of Elon-protest. Turns out the FBI seized his devices due to an alleged hack of Fox News, an allegation Tim denies.

Taking his devices is an enormous deal for him as that means taking multiple servers, hard drives, and various other hardware.

From what I've read, this is a massive overstep by the FBI and Fox News should be ashamed that they've brought this case against him.

It sounds like Burke found a live stream of Fox anchors during tapings. Unedited, and publicly available to anybody who had the link.

That's not hacking. That's just terrible security on Fox's part.

Wonder if they will listen to his 12 days of Bobcat Christmas creation?

Thanks for the link, was a good read, and wish Tim the absolute best of luck! Unless the Fed's got something else, I don't see how this goes anywhere. And sadly, these claims have been very damaging to Tim.

I'm legally ignorant, so please understand that with these two questions:

1) Has he been charged with anything or just raided by the FBI?

2) If, during the raid, which may prove to be unfounded, they find other illegal activity, is he able to be charged with something completely unrelated?

This is outrageous conduct on the part of the FBI.

I do not believe he has been indicted. Your other question would depend on the scope of the warrant.

Oops, was going to comment about OCF's opinion of the FBI search warrant but then realized he's talking about a lot more than that particular action... Nevermind...

They should be ashamed for existing. And to think an Ohio alum was responsible for developing Fox into what it is today.

Two sides to every story, we don't know the details but I would be surprised if Burke didn't do at least something nefarious. Then again, found him supremely annoying back when he regularly posted here so maybe that clouds my mind. I just remember him desperately trying to sneak mentions of him being a ladies man into any discussion possible.

The story seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Fox News accidentally failed to make URLs which streamed live recordings of shows private, likely under the assumption that the domains were very obscure and nobody would find them.

Tim Burke found them. He then published what he found.

That's not hacking by any reasonable definition. There's a legal definition of hacking: "illegally using a computer to make an attempt to access another computer without consent to cause harm or commit fraud." He typed an address into a browser.

I would respond with some counterpoints in my head but I've got a lot to do today and can't handle the workload of 15 BLSS replies.

Sounds like you're very confident in your stance here. Good luck with your work. Anytime you can support government overreach because you didn't like what someone posted on a Ohio sports message board, you gotta do it.

Keep fighting the good fight.

Sigh. I only said there are 2 sides to every story...so you respond with one side of the story and expose my scandalous bias against him, which I explicitly disclosed upfront and downplayed the very minor point I was making. Yet you still can't resist trying to spin that into a deep dive debate to give you something to do.

I haven't seen the second side to this story. Maybe I missed it. What's being charged?

That is exactly my point. All we have heard about it at this point is the defendant and his lawyer talking about how he did nothing wrong. Woopity do. That is a prototypical situation to say "there are 2 sides to every story." That's all.

Forgive me for having doubts that a former Deadspin reporter hacked Fox News to break that all important story about Kanye West being a crazy person.

And forgive me for considering that a raging liberal that loathes Fox News might have done a little more here than he is leading on. This may come as a surprise to you, but people charged with crimes often say they didn't do it when they did, or as I suggested, at least did something a little nefarious.

I know, it is weird for me too. Two core principles are clashing for me here - My absolute hatred of the government...and my commitment to always allowing both sides of the story to be heard. The feds explicitly said they do not wish to release their probable cause for fear of it messing with their investigation. All I've tried to say is we should wait and see before we crown Burke an innocent victim here.

Hmmm, can't put my finger on it, but this reminds me of someone in the news a lot the past few years. This person I'm thinking of is surrendering to authorities down in Georgia as I type this.
