It's amazing what a high level youth football is played at these days. It's obviOUs this kid has been training to be a QB for a long time. Pretty flawless mechanics by 8th grade.

But he's also rated ahead of 3 star Mitch Trubisky who has verbaled to North Carolina.....Trubisky is good...real good.

The funny thing is, just the other day I was wondering when someone would post a thread with a title like "Worst recruiting class ever", or "How come we don't have any recruits yet when such-and-such school has 4?". I'm guessing that after watching the quality of recruits that Ohio is getting, people are resisting the urge, and being patient.

It  looks to me like the teams are just going to keep getting better and better, and 2011 will prove to be just another step up, not the top.

Do we get a WR or TE next now that this years QB is in the fold?  Which defensive position verbals first?

Really, of more interest to me will be whether the trend continues towards earlier and earlier commits. Not so long ago there were few verbals prior to January, and what few there were were people that were under-the-radar guys, perhaps with family connections. That isn't to say they were bad players, mind you. For example, Curtis Meyers was a good player that fits that profile - early commit, under the radar, family connection.

Back then the word was you could hold your Ohio offer until the end of January, and see what else came in, and it would be fine. Gradually that has changed. Each year the classes fill earlier. They may offer 20 linemen, for example, and want four. Once they have 4 commits, the other offers are pulled. Thus, a high school student with an offer can hold his offer for awhile, now, but I wouldn't recommend waiting until January.

I see the earlier commits as a very positive sign. To me it is an indication that more and more Ohio is becoming a desired destination, not a place to go if "you don't get a better offer". I'm hopeful that Ohio gets a couple more commits this summer, and then they keep flowing in at steady pace in the fall. I'd love to see, say, 10 by the end of November.

Rivals has some old data on recruiting, with the commit dates, but the data before 2005 is missing or suspect. Since 2005 was a class put together at the last minute due to a coaching change, that data isn't all that relevant. Here is what I see:

The trend is clear towards more early recruits, and less late ones. It isn't dramatic, year to year, but over a long period, the tend is obvious.

Yeah....beating a bunch of other schools....including Fiami on both verbals......me likey.

4 verbals as of 7/5 is awesome.  2 on each side.  All look great!  Times sure have changed since I started watching OHIO football in 1986.

Since Buddy asked in another thread how we are doing competing against other MAC schools, here's the data on players offered by both schools, who chose one or the other. It doesn't include players that were offered by two MAC schools, but who chose someone else:

All told Ohio has six recruits that have other MAC offers, and have had 5 players they offered choose other MAC schools. This is about three times better than any prior year. I can only guess that some of the factors are:
1. indoor practice facility
2. Being on national TV 6 times, winning 5, including bowl
3. Having the highest winning percentage in the MAC over the last 5 years
4. Getting people drafted consistently, plus many free agents
5. Having people making national honor lists
6. Highest preseason ranking in the MAC
7. Developing a winning tradtion
8. Coaching stability
9. Great fans
10. Great game-day atmosphere
11. Beautiful Campus
12. No popped collars
13. Academic support program
