The thing I will always remember about OUellette is how he came by his number, 45. He had just arrived on campus, as a walkon, and they had a few practices. He had requested some numbers, probably his high school number, and perhaps numbers belonging to favorite running backs of his. He went to pick up his equipment, and was puzzled by why he was assigned 45, a number he hadn't requested at all. When he asked why he got 45, the equipment manager told him with a twinkle in his eye that the number had been assigned by the special instruction of the head coach. 45 was Solich's number, and he wanted OUellette to wear it.

This was long before OUellette had made his appearance in a game, and before he had even earned his scholarship.
I wish the game announcers had actually known the real story. They made up something about how when he came into the Akron game his freshman year because all of the other RBs had fumblitis, Frank said, "Ouellette who"? Like Frank didn't even know who he was because he was a lowly walk-on. It's really nice when these announcers study up before the game, which unfortunately doesn't always happen in MAC telecasts.
The coaches give them work ups and stories on the players. They obviously gave them a lot on AJ, I thought that the announcers did very well.

I can see how that could happen during the game.

The coaching staff knew Irons was not playing,so I'd expect them to be concentrating on coaching the game,not him on the sidelines.

The fact that he wasn't on the sidelines could mean a number of things,including he went into the locker room.

I don't know when he went to the hospital.
But I would think that,either at halftime,or after the game,the coaching staff and players would have been advised what was going on.

Best wishes to him. I hope that of those two choices, it's the appendix, and that it's not ruptured.

I would not assume all players were scheduled to travel as a team after the bowl. Christmas season. Players from all over, would they make them return to Athens then travel to Canada. Our high schoolers are not required to return with the team if the family has a family destination that makes more sense. For the Rourke and Irons households they might have arranged separate from team travel post game and would not then be on travel rosters. Now this is where someone who really knows how this works wiil come into the discussion

I think one or more members of our training staff were attending to him in the locker room during the first half. He was reported to be vomiting heavily and was not going to be able to play.
He is really a good kid and was a good teammate from all reports. Too bad he didn't get a chance to play.
Many think he has a good chance to play in the CFL (or maybe the NFL) next year.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to play in my last game as an Ohio bobcat because I was not feeling to well and ended up spending the night in the hospital along with spending all day in the hospital today, I apologize for not being able to push through and say goodbye to the family.

Most definitely CFL. He's projected as a really high draft pick, especially being a native Canadian

I feel like Frank Solich, we should have won a few more and if this is not a one off and players routinely go to hospitals and they don’t know, that would make them poor leaders. Based on the additional context and the players statements they are good leaders that are incompetent at times, hence we have never won the big one. Of the people that follow and troll me, I don’t think about them, but I wonder. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the the medi-est of them all.

I just read through this thread again and realized no one posted any comments about attending the game/venue/Bash/etc, so I thought I'd give my thoughts and see if others that attended cared to share. (for reference, I've attended Mobile x2/Shreveport/Boise/Montgomery/Frisco/New Orleans, and missed Bahamas/Detroit/St. Pete in the modern era)

-Frisco was a great area that I knew nothing about prior to this trip, and I'd gladly go back to the Frisco Bowl. There was a ton of stuff in general vicinity of the stadium and the team hotel, including The Star, which is the home of the Cowboys corporate and practice facilities.

-Toyota Stadium was a fantastic venue, and relatively brand new. Built to host FC Dallas, but a nice setting for football also, as evidenced by the FCS Championship game being hosted there on Saturday. If we built a new Peden, I'd want it to be a lot like that place. No idea if they had shuttles, but there were a bunch of hotels within walking distance, and I stayed in one of those, a brand new Hampton for which I spent $105 a night, which was a steal. One could have easily flown to Dallas, Uber'ed to an adjacent hotel and back to the airport, and would have never wanted for a car with all that was available in walking distance to the stadium/hotels.

-The Bobcat Bash was oversold, rightfully so, and the setting was better than any other we have had, as there is a permanent tent area that overlooks an end zone/corner stand area, and it was ideal due to the intermittent rains. I am certain many fans chose to stay in that area during the game for as long as they could because it was nice and dry. Great job by the AA for pulling in a great crowd and accommodating walk ups.

-OHIO alumni definitely outnumbered SDSU folks, likely three or four to one, from what I could see. There are many OHIO alumni in the area, but from what I saw in venturing around, we "traveled" well for this game also, likely due to Dallas being fairly easily accessible via air affordably on short notice. Great to see ytowncat, as always, and sorry I didn't catch any other Attackers.

-The development staff also did a really great job, better than past bowls and more cohesive with athletics staff that my perception of past bowl trips. There were a couple of events that were hosted, such as a tour of The Star, and those events were far better attended than most bowl game entertainment events that I have attended at previous bowl games. Contributing to the success was likely having more alumni in the area, and they were able to pull in Chad Estis for the game, EVP for Cowboy's Business Ops and an MSA grad, which was a nice get as well. Big kudos, and hopefully it will lead to some increased alumni engagement and charitable giving from that area near term.

-And as for the game, a total butt whipping, and too bad that many here are just down selling it as having caught SDSU on an off year. We've been on the other end of those, and I don't think we have to apologize for manhandling the Aztecs. They had three weeks to get over the disappointment of the close of their season, but the Cats were disappointed as well. The OHIO staff and team outperformed SDSU, and they should get props for that. And the 110 OWNED the battle of the bands. I hadn't previously seen the dance routine they performed, and this one was stellar, on the level of Gangnam/Party Rock.

So in total, I would give the event an A-, the only upgrade to an A or A+ would have been a weekend date to make it easier for more Attackers to attend.

Interested in other's feedback, and I am already looking forward to next year's bowl.

Overall, enjoyed the experience ... other than the Frisco Flu I'm still getting over a week later. Funny ... I guess sitting in 40 degree rain in December isn't smart. Who knew!

Wish merchandise was more reasonably priced.

Contributing to the success was likely having more alumni in the area, and they were able to pull in Chad Estis for the game, EVP for Cowboy's Business Ops and an MSA grad, which was a nice get as well. Big kudos, and hopefully it will lead to some increased alumni engagement and charitable giving from that area near term.

-And as for the game, a total butt whipping, and too bad that many here are just down selling it as having caught SDSU on an off year. We've been on the other end of those, and I don't think we have to apologize for manhandling the Aztecs. They had three weeks to get over the disappointment of the close of their season, but the Cats were disappointed as well. The OHIO staff and team outperformed SDSU, and they should get props for that. And the 110 OWNED the battle of the bands. I hadn't previously seen the dance routine they performed, and this one was stellar, on the level of Gangnam/Party Rock.

So in total, I would give the event an A-, the only upgrade to an A or A+ would have been a weekend date to make it easier for more Attackers to attend.

Interested in other's feedback, and I am already looking forward to next year's bowl.
Overall, enjoyed the experience ... other than the Frisco Flu I'm still getting over a week later. Funny ... I guess sitting in 40 degree rain in December isn't smart. Who knew!

Wish merchandise was more reasonably priced.
