First saw the Browns in Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1962 at the bright old age of 7. As fate would have it we sat in section 32. My dad was a Kroger manager and won season tickets because he sold a ton of bakery goods. Needless to say because he had a pop machine in his store, we got a new football every year when we turned in pages of coke caps. What we saw today out of Baker Mayfield was far from what true Browns fans from that era would appreciate. His antics in regards to Hue Jackson were despicable. Short of a personal and heartfelt apology, I'll continue to root for the Browns but not that clown. Sad.

I saw that. Wondered what he has against Hue Jackson. I agree with you Alan....but did you notice the announcers thought it was great? Can you imagine Ray Scott, Curt Gowdy or Pat Summerall thinking that was great?

Baker is quite young and in the heat of the game today possibly made a mistake. Could there be some injustice which coach Jackson inflicted which could elicit such a reaction? He did determine very early that Baker was not ready to be an NFL Quarterback and he would learn under Tyrod Taylor.
There was and probably still is rancor between Hugh Jackson and his loyalists and John Dorsey the new GM and his management team. Weak ownership doesn't help.
I will give Baker a pass on his behavior today.

PS: I didn't know you could get a new football by turning in bottle caps.

Between my dad's Kroger store and the local barber shop, we had lots of bottle caps.

The Browns are about to become very successful and very disliked. Both due to Baker Mayfield.

Baker is immature and cocky. Surprise, surprise. Early success in life can go to anyone's head. Baker is in a business though where one's luck can change dramatically on a single play with life changing consequences. Enjoy the moment, Kid, because nobody stays on top forever.

I like watching him play. I enjoyed watching him plant that flag at midfield in Ohio Stadium, because they asked for it. Today's actions? Not so much.

I wonder what the reaction would be if he wasn't white. I feel like he gets a bit of a pass because, while his antics are immature, he has the look. If Michael Vick, Cam Newton, or god forbid, Colin Kaepernick, did any of this, I think the kickback would be ten times more extreme.

Hue Jackson jumped to the Bengals a division rival less than a week after being fired. He also Threw Mayfield under the bus in an interview. Hue Jackson was 3-36-1 as coach of the Browns. They are 5-2 since they fired him including 2 wins in a 4 week span over the Bengals with Hue on the opposite sidelines. This is a special case where the former coach is sitting there knowing the other teams calls and audibles. Hue could have waited until next season to join the Bengals staff.

Not sure what the big issue is here. Comparing the 1960’s to today is totally foolish. The guy is a winner and has that mentality. Is it cocky? Yes. Is it unsportsmanlike? Yes. If football entertainment? Yes. Do antivs like this get people talking about him? Yes. Is this attitude part of what makes him a winner? Yes. Does all the above make him mor money at the end of the day? Yes.

Poor Alan.

Personally, I’d like to see Baker plant a Browns flag at midfield of every AFC North opponent next season. I’m sure Roger Goodell will fine him but it’s not like anyone respects the NFL anyway. There’s a long list of players out there every Sunday who are guilty of far worse.

Well, I'll be making sure my young son knows you can be intense and a winner without behaving like a total jerk like Mayfield.

If I was a GM, I'd wonder when my star QB will end up with a concussion or a broken collar bone due to these antics.

Just a continuing race to the bottom in terms of civility and class. MAGA. I'm a Browns season ticket holder by the way and the behavior of their fans is unreal.

From the comments of many on this thread, it looks like I'm not alone. Based on the posters who I know, it seems to divide along the lines of age. Now if I could just find one of the those Coke footballs.

Found these. I'm pretty sure we had these in the 70's as well. I think I remember collecting Reds players.

Hue went to the division and in-state arch rival within a week of being fired. Give me another example of a HEAD COACH doing that? I don't blame Baker at all for razzing that traitor. In fact, I thought it was hilarious.

Hey, it's the NFL. They've pretty much taken the clamps off players' on-field celebrations so sportsmanship is a thing of the past.

That's it Ted. 5 complete sheets got you a MacGregor leather football. On the sheet you posted, one complete sheet got you a Bears Bobblehead. Hard to believe that was over 50 years ago.

I certainly am not wringing my hands over it like Alan, but it's ridiculous to criticize a fired man from going and getting another job. Why should he have loyalty to the team that fired him?

And Mayfield's antics seem pretty damn petty given that Jackson's biggest sin seems to be not throwing him to the dogs on week one. Easing a rookie QB into the NFL is hardly a radical approach.

I would hardly consider in wringing my hands over it. When a player on the one team you've followed for over 55 years acts like a child, it's disappointing. As many coaches have said to many players and fans after the exhibition of bad behavior, we're better than that.

How were the bottle caps attached to the paper?
We are talking about an era of fairly unsophisticated adhesives.

Pretty sure we glued them down with airplane cement/model car glue.

If you've followed the browns for over 55 years...you've got deeper problems.

I have greatly enjoyed off of the people on my facebook feed (particularly walmart fans) bemoaning "anyone from the state of ohio who can root for Mayfield after what he did to the Buckeyes". Delicious.

I don't understand this at all. The Browns fired him. He was no longer a Brown, he was unemployed. He got a job offer, and took it. If he had quit to take a job with a competitor, yes, I would call him a traitor, but since he was no longer a Brown, that doesn't apply. Unless he had a clause in his employment contract prohibiting him from working for another NFL team for some amount of time, there is nothing wrong with this at all.

Hue did nothing to advance Baker's career and you could argue that he actually hindered it. Additionally, the Browns are still paying Jackson so the fact that he's getting paid to coach against them, twice in the same season, is highly unusual, especially in light of the fact that Williams and Kitchens haven't changed much (because you really can't) in term of offensive scheming. I'd be very upset too so I'm not faulting Mayfield, it just seems like he's just a little over the top on this one. You can be pissed in a more diplomatic way in my opinion.
