If you recall when I originally posted this statement, I said that I had a very reliable source who wished to remain anonymous.
I recall. What about protecting that person's anonymity means you can't share examples? What sort of "climate" did she create, and how did she do so? What does it mean when you say she "mistreated subordinates"? What examples can you provide of that behavior? Did your source witness it?

Those are pretty serious accusations. Earlier in this thread you posited they were serious enough that the President may have quietly forced Cromer out. Surely you recognize how serious a suggestion that is, and what having that information out in the world publicly could do to her reputation, right?

It feels like evidence is pretty important, regardless of how much you trust your source.
The source gave me a few examples, which if I was to talk about those examples would potentially reveal their identities, and unlike Cromer they are not high-level administrators who deserve public scrutiny. You might also note that another poster who has lots of street cred on this board (even though he is a dogfaced grunt) indicated that he had heard much the same thing as my source told me.
I don't follow. You can't provide examples of the improper behavior without revealing identities? I'm not asking for a transcript. Just actual anecdotes of this behavior.

Did she yell? Insult them? Threaten them? Maybe I'm just missing something, but I don't understand how a leader created a "culture" and there are all these rumors, but nobody can even cite a type of behavior.
Haven't checked into the board for awhile, not even lurking, and I see somethings haven't changed.

Well, this is good news. Cromer was no credit to Ohio University and did more damage than good, IMHO. I don't think she'll be missed. I would support Amy Dean to get the position. She's a good administrator and is an OHIO gal through and through.

Though it pains me, I agree with SBH that Claude Sowle was the worst OHIO prez of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century. There were some dudes back in the 19th Century who were right up there with Sowle. I often summarize Sowle's presidency as making the worst out of a bad situation. Nellis was just kind of meh.
Help me understand what damage she did. And I don't want to hear any of the Albin bullshit.
Was just meh. Didn't do much of anything, except polish up her NCAA resume. Was not liked by her employees, and fostered a not-so-good work environment in the ADs office. This information was gathered totally independently of Bobcat1996.
The biggest problem with the “culture” in the athletic department is not the work environment but the fact that half the staff does not live in or close to Athens. Some even live in Cincinnati. Both coaches and staff are living farther and farther away. No one wants to live there. I can’t blame them, but it’s going to be impossible to advance the athletic department like this.
What coaches don’t live in Athens County?
And what half of the staff doesn't live close to Athens?
I don’t know the complete list.

The entire development staff lives in Columbus, the NCAA compliance director lives in Cincinnati , the new business person lives in Cleveland.

Football, and both basketballs have assistants living in Columbus.

From talking to staff at the “coaches show on the road”
This is actually one of the topics on the agenda for tomorrow's city council meeting with the president and her executive staff - remote work and the effect it is having on Athens income taxes.
I'm fine with the development staff living...where the donation money is, and it ain't in Athens. Let's hire one in CLE, too. This reminds me of when I tried to get on the board of the Green & White Club. Nope, didn't live in Athens County. Ridiculous parochialism that has held us back for decades.
Jeff McKinney was on that board as was the late Darwin Maple neither of whom lived in Athens County. Must have been before my time and oldkatz time on the board.

You also had to be elected to be on the board. Someone evidently failed to win the election.

I asked how to be nominated for election. I was told I could not be nominated because I lived too far from Athens. Sorry, it's a fact. But a moot point now.

G&W Club used to donate $10k a year to Ohio Athletics. OBC raises 30 to 40 times that figure today. Like him or not, Schaus was right to shutter the good-ole-boy pregame party society.

If we had a Like function, I would hit it one millions times. Loved the Green & White Club, I was a member. Was always amazed at the quality of organization and commitment. Very thankful of the people I met and spirit. But the advancement of college athletics called for something different.

I guess I missed it when it happened , but Shaus retired as Southern Conference commissioner in 2023 after 4 years there. In his retirement speech he mentioned he had prostate cancer the year before but is in remission.

It was closer to $100K. At its height we had 928 memberships (not members but memberships which often included multiple members of a family), sponsored a tailgate before every home football game, some basketball games, one for each Olympic sport where possible, sponsored the Senior Athletes banquet where we had many nationally known speakers through the years, and all for $100 per membership.

It was more of a social organization than a designated fundraising group where folks could simply show up with a chair if they chose and visit with friends and neighbors and other Bobcat fans. We often had 1000 or more folks for a Saturday home tailgate.

When Jimbo said you had to join the Bobcat Club to be a G&W member, that was the beginning of the end. he also eliminated split the pot which BG makes tons of money off of and did away with the Senior banquet. He was no friend of the common man.

Now Kirby, saw the value in it. In fact when he met for the first time with our treasurer and me, he said "gentlemen before we get started, how much is the G&W membership this year?" We told him $100 and he wrote us a check from his personal account on the spot. Jimbo on the other hand never joined.

As much as I generally respect your opinion SBH, you're way off on this one.

But the annual donation to Athletics was $10k. All OBC membership dollars go to Athletics. Between $300k and $400k per year...and without the risk of alcohol related accidents associated with unmonitored distribution of beer via the G&W Club. It was a lawsuit waiting to happen.

And my man, those issues never happened. Donations are measured by direct money and in kind contributions plus the financial burden of putting on tailgates. Again, your ire of not becoming a board member is killing your credibility to speak intelligently about this topic. Let it go.

Some folks got their wish today. I was actually a fan of hers despite everything. Nice tough sxhedule the year after a championship should be applauded. I wish her the best of luck. Only way to get Ohio out of this rut is to switch conferences. The MAC will go down slowly but surely. The commish needs to do something. Im sure 5 years from now Miami, Toledo, BGSU and Buffalo will look elsewhere.
I would like to know some of the things that she did to move the athletic department forward. How did her coaching hires do? How were revenues raised? What special projects was she able to raise money for? Did she even have a say in the current schedules? When this years schedules were made, we had no idea what type of year we were going to have, that’s for sure.

I don’t know her, I only met her once so I have no idea what she’s like as a boss/leader. I would rate her success here primarily based on some of the answers to my questions above . I’m glad she hired Albin as head coach, but considering the timing, I’m not sure she had a lot of options.

Regardless of what type of job she did, Ohio’s financial situation will make it tough to get out of the “rut” you refer to. Ohio ( and the MAC) would have to raise its financial commitment to athletics to keep up with the evolving reality of today’s D-1 sports. I don’t see that happening regardless of what conference we’re in. We can’t keep making students pay for 70-80%(or whatever it is now) of our costs-can we?

Key quote: "The hire is contingent upon a satisfactory background check and approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors"

Seems likely that this won't be approved based on OCF and 1996's deep, well-supported evidence of abuse of subordinates by Cromer.

The only question at this point is how much jail time she'll end up receiving for working as a woman in athletics. What gets me is how blatantly she did so. Didn't even try and hide it.

Jokes aside, does anyone know if there is a short list of candidates out there?

We've had a pretty successful string of AD's - as well as being a place where people come in and have success and continue on to further success. So I gotta think OU is high on some list of assistant AD's across the country. Kirby was at Miami for a few years after us, and has been at Texas Tech for at least a decade at this point. Julie off to LSU. Schauss moving on to being a commissioner.

Actually, when I was on the board, you never attended a meeting that I was at, and I didn't miss too many meetings during my brief tenure of a few years. My presence on the board was probably the real reason that the AD decided to shut us down.

Yeah, I saw that. I don’t know how all her serving on committees really helps the department but it’s good for her, I’m sure. Reading hiring statements is a lot like reading an obituary - lots of nice things to support the individual and that’s what you would expect. Sounds like some good things happened during her watch.

At face value, I enjoy seeing Ohio University AD on all these committees when they're talked about. Maybe we didn't see direct benefit, but it's always good to feel like you have a seat at some of those big tables. Certainly better than not being on them at all. She was always thought more highly of in that world than on this board (lol).
