Anyone know what they’re doing with a new helmet? They’ve teased a photo twice now, and I can’t tell if it’s a bad photoshop or what I’m even looking at - but they’re either a weird new sticker or they’re covering up a logo change? Anyone seen an actual photo or with their own eyeballs?

Presumably it’s some sort of homecoming nod… ?

My guess is they're using the sticker to cover up a new logo that will be revealed on game day.

Otherwise, we're trying to do our best New York Jets imitation in design?

It is a throwback helmet logo as is normal for homecoming. You can see it here on twitter.

This is a dumb question, I'm sure, but did something change with helmet/decal technology that made it easier to change helmet design frequently?

It feels like for decades helmets never changed, now there are teams that rarely seem to wear the same over week to week. Are they just reskinning the same helmets, or do we just buy way more helmets these days?

Most things get cheaper over time with new technology as long as the natural resources involved aren't depleted but I am certain that isn't what is going on here. Decals have always been cheap and, while I have never known an equipment manager, I suspect that a significant fraction of them are replaced weekly even if the logo isn't changed. The cost of doing this for homecoming is probably almost negligible.

I think that what is going on is a different take on what the purpose of uniforms are. Uniforms were supposed to just that, "uniform", so that it represented and identified the team that was wearing it. Now it is a way to get media attention, recruit attention, help the school sell gear to fans, and in the case of D1,help Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor sell uniforms to high school and youth football.

I kind of feel like there can be a happy medium here. You can have fun with different uniforms every week if you can afford it but the uniform should still be identifiably yours. As in, don't invent new logos just for a one off, never ever add a color that isn't a school color for a one off, and your primary two or three colors should be somewhere present in every uniform.

What did you think of the Albino Bengal Tigers last night? I think they've worn them before, but I find them kind of strange. I think they violate at least one of your "rules," but maybe they don't apply to NFL-level professional teams (as distinct from what are now college-level professional teams).

There isn't a lot of orange so it comes close to violation the third rule but technically didn't. They might be a little more off from the norm I think that they are still pretty easily identifiable as Cincinnati Bengal uniforms so I don't really take a big issue with them.

In case you didn’t know, the Cincinnati zoo has white Bengal tigers.

I heard about 15 years ago that they were thinking of making it their actual uniform. I think if they are going to use it as a alternate, they did a pretty good job of still making it a Bengal uniform.

Really. That's interesting.

Edit: Now, I see the post below by OCF. Seems you wouldn't want to wear uniforms that represent a tiger with what is in essence a rare genetic disorder. Puts this in a different perspective for me.

No, I did not know that, but my favorite AI Bot told me this about white Bengal tigers:

"White Bengal tigers are not a distinct subspecies but a rare color variation of the Bengal tiger caused by a double recessive gene, a condition known as leucism. They are almost exclusively found in captivity today due to selective breeding, which often results in serious health problems and genetic deformities. Wild white tigers are extremely rare because their lack of camouflage makes it difficult for them to survive, and there have been no sightings in the wild since the 1950s."

Did you know that?

[One must, of course, be careful with information generated by an AI Bot, but this answered seemed to have some credibility.]

I wish that they'd have throwback helmets to those in the early 1960s with the wide green strip down the center. Can anyone find a photo of one of those helmets? I did a search and could not.

Well, I'm going to bed now, but first -- GO OHIO beat NIU and wish them well in their future endeavors!

BTW: Some weird stuff going on right now with me losing internet connection for a few nano seconds in the middle of a post and then having to come back and finish it after the connection re-establishes. It's happened several times in the last ten minutes or so. Makes my thought process even more disjointed than usual.

Not a fan of the sticker on the helmet. Maybe I'm too old school, but the Paw would to. I still will never refer to the Bobcats , "Bobbies"!

You can find all of OU's helmets here:

Never knew about the 1995 home helmets (white).

Still waiting for the day they wear the blue and white uniforms, like the old Detroit Lions teams. 🤞🏽

Burner, I said I am not a fan of the new sticker that may be used at Homecoming. Nor will I ever use the term "Bobbies"

As a Bobcat whose first year in Athens was 1977, I loved today’s sticker.
