As Doris Day once sang, “que sera sera”. These big programs were operating with impunity, raking in major coin, paying coaches multi millions and not sharing with the players, who did most of the work. Now it’s the Wild West again and some programs will not survive. Likely the power 5 will operate as their own entity and the rest will drop down a notch.

Probably no longer necessary to give credit to the singer of “que sera sera”. If someone didn't know who sang this song, I'm quite sure they do now after your 36th reference to it in the last 15 years.

Its not whether someone wanted it or not - simply the realization that it was going to happen. Players have been paid and received "favors" forever at both the factories and gasp (to a much much lesser level) Ohio. This simply allows some to make a more honest dollar.

Reality - we never competed against Clemson, Bama, OSU or any of the others that will take this opportunity and run.

I'm not up on tax law so maybe someone who's knowledgeable can answer this, but since players' tuition isn't being paid by the school will they have to declare it as taxable income? Or is Built just funneling the money into BYU through a tuition fund?

Now there are high school kids looking to cash in.

Apparently one of the top QB's in high school is from Texas.

They don't allow NIL for high school kids.

He's going to skip his senior year of football, graduate early and enroll in OSU.

According to the host, he'll make more in NIL the the salaries of his HS coaching staff combined.

I say let it happen. If someone wants to prioritize a sport, let them. The fact that BYU is paying for walk ons is huge. Hope it gives them a leg up.

At the end of the day, football to me is asinine to attempt to fund up and compete. At least with basketball (both men's and women's), all it takes is 5 people that can flat out play, and you got a team in the hunt. With football, so many moving parts have to cooperate.

While I certainly don't blame him for cashing in, its an awful, awful look and truly makes me sad that he is giving up maybe the most memorable year of his life for an easy buck.

Kid is supposedly the #1 prospect in his recruiting class at the most desirable/marketable position, he would have plenty of time to cash in.

This is the new norm, crazy that we're going to have a lot more 18 year old kids walking around with 6-7 figure bank accounts. What could go wrong?

Is a scholarship that a student gets from an organization taxable? If I apply for a Gatorade Academic Scholarship (not a real thing...that I know of) and receive it for an annual $1000 scholarship, do I have to claim that? If not, couldn't this company claim that they are awarding scholarships for academic purposes to these students?

This is an NIL deal though, which is endorsement money. If this was done in the form of each of the walk ons received a "scholarship", that would be an issue in many other manners.

Yes, I believe that the law of unintended consequences is coming home to roost. This will be a real mess as it unwinds. Anyone who says that they can predict what the landscape will look like in ten years is delusional.

You're 100% spot on. It absolutely will trickle down as far as possible. Who knows, maybe it already has? Maybe coaches will think twice about the impact offering an 8th grader will have on the game they "love"?

Okay, let’s tone down the hysteria a bit, huh? He’s 18 and was able to do this at all because he graduated from high school a year early. I don’t have any problem whatsoever with a high school GRADUATE foregoing his or her senior year of high school. It’s not the choice i likely would have made, but then i wasn’t choosing between a relaxing year of high school and (conservative estimates of) 6-figure paydays

Coughlin Automotive has given six O$Uers (C.J. Stroud, Chris Olave, Miyan Williams, Zach Harrison, Haskell Garrett and Teradja Mitchell) new cars as part of an NIL deal. In return the players will participate in "community outreach" activities, such as fundraisers, toy drives, etc.

Actually that would be your old Honda dealer Ray Eubanks (???? If my memory has not failed me). Like I said, we are poorly positioned here in Athens for NIL, and when this gets going, it will hurt us, even against MAC competition.
