How many "super-seniors" do we have relative to other schools? With the COVID rule allowing guys to come back, I figured all of college football was going to have very experienced rosters this year. So fans will probably think "wow, we got all these guys back" without realizing their opponents returned a lot of guys too...
We’re #52 in returning production (according to Bill Connelly’s numbers). Not strictly a count of super seniors, but the easiest correlate i could find. For reference, that puts us 9th most returning production in the MAC.
Louisiana is #3 and Syracuse is #44. On the plus side, Northwestern has the second LEAST returning production in the country
That’s very interesting that the MAC has so many teams in the Top 50 of retuning production.
Also, Louisiana... Wow.
I think that is partly a function of having seniors are that are good, but not good enough to move to the next level.
That's a good point. I would think this would be more noticeable in basketball than football. If you could make 6 figures in Europe playing hoops, you probably aren't sticking around in college another year. But in football other than guys going to the NFL, what options are there for college guys who are good but not elite. Canada? Do those guys make reasonable money? I always assumed they made basically nothing like most minor league baseball players. If that's the case, I'd stick around for school ESPECIALLY with NIL now. I'd think even average players at P5 schools are going to make a couple grand extra now in addition to room/board and working towards a free grad degree.
(I'm completely unknowledgeable here, so if I'm off-base in my assumptions please let me know!)
