A tough non-conference schedule, an unexpected coaching change, and a relative lack of "super-seniors" lead to the first losing season in a long, long time.

Team prediction: Ohio finishes in the top 10 in turnover margin. (Two years ago we were 90th with a minus 4 but last season in three games we were plus 4 in three games with the second-best per-game average in 1A.)

Conference prediction: No MAC team will have the worst home attendance in division 1A. (Hawaii isn't allowing fans but this is still a bold prediction.)

BOLD PREDICTION TO THE NEGATIVE: The retirement of Solich ends up being more impactful than imagined. As a result, Ohio loses every single game this year. Albin is fired and other recently fired coach, Scott Frost, of Nebraska is hired to take his place, thus leading to the darkest decline in Ohio Football yet.

BOLD PREDICTION TO THE POSITIVE: Unrestrained by the conservative play of Coach Solich, Ohio becomes an offensive juggernaut that overwhelms the MAC and leads to a MAC Championship and then an unexpected upset of Ohio State in the post season. The result being that the entire globe gets turned on it's axis, and we all die -- though happily in our final moments.

unbeknownst to all of us, the team will be beset by unrest as the players realize the head coach is taking the fun out of the game. Compounding this situation we will suffer some injuries, most devastatingly to our starting quarterback. But the second stringer will step up and we will win some ball games. The season will come to a crescendo in our final game (the MACC) when in the first half our star running back will hurt his knee. Only interested in winning, the head coach will try to secretly shoot him up with a drug so he can play. Confronted by the other players who declare they will quit if the player gets the shot, Albin will leave at halftime in shame. An ex-qb (Tettleton) will lead the team the second half and we win — starting a long and successful career for tyler as our head coach. unfortunately our replacement QB transfers to Brown.

I don't think this is out of the question. I think if the Cats didn't have Nathan Rourke in 2019 it could've been a losing season. I also think the team could have a losing season and not be heading in the wrong direction. The tough OoC schedule and some very tough conference games could make this possible.

The Bobcats spring a 3-4 defense in week one, with Daxon at NT and a host of linebackers squeezing the orange on pass and run blitzes
This would be cool.

I agree. Having 2 P5 schools, even if one only won one game last year, plus a ranked G5 opponent, a long time coach suddenly retiring dur to health, a lesser number of 5th year seniors than a lot of MAC schools or so it seems to me, a QB whose last two seasons ended with the same shoulder injury, only getting in 3 games last year so a relative lack of gained game experience..... It seems like the deck is stacked to end the run of .500 or better seasons. If we go 5-7 this year I won't look at Albin as an immediate failure nor will I be thinking that we can't win 8 or 9 games and maybe a MACC in 2022.

How many "super-seniors" do we have relative to other schools? With the COVID rule allowing guys to come back, I figured all of college football was going to have very experienced rosters this year. So fans will probably think "wow, we got all these guys back" without realizing their opponents returned a lot of guys too...

And if the Cats didn't have Tyler Tettleton they wouldn't have won their first two bowl games and topped Penn State.

I love the 3-4, but not sure this is the year to switch with all the talented DT’s we’ve got. I’m optimistic about our run defense improving this year with Caesar and Daxon clogging up the middle. Those are two very large humans.

We’re #52 in returning production (according to Bill Connelly’s numbers). Not strictly a count of super seniors, but the easiest correlate i could find. For reference, that puts us 9th most returning production in the MAC.

Louisiana is #3 and Syracuse is #44. On the plus side, Northwestern has the second LEAST returning production in the country

That’s very interesting that the MAC has so many teams in the Top 50 of retuning production.

Also, Louisiana... Wow.

I think that is partly a function of having seniors are that are good, but not good enough to move to the next level.

That's a good point. I would think this would be more noticeable in basketball than football. If you could make 6 figures in Europe playing hoops, you probably aren't sticking around in college another year. But in football other than guys going to the NFL, what options are there for college guys who are good but not elite. Canada? Do those guys make reasonable money? I always assumed they made basically nothing like most minor league baseball players. If that's the case, I'd stick around for school ESPECIALLY with NIL now. I'd think even average players at P5 schools are going to make a couple grand extra now in addition to room/board and working towards a free grad degree.

(I'm completely unknowledgeable here, so if I'm off-base in my assumptions please let me know!)

Lou will make a PA play call that refers to "social distancing", as in bad defensive coverage on a play. Hopefully referring to the opposing team :)

Sorry. Akron actually scored ten pts, including a 4th-quarter TD, in a 50-pt loss to Auburn.
