Just a complete lack of energy/hope/excitement on this board and it's only mid-October. Shows how quickly a bad hire can cancel out years of improvement. (Although in truth, we haven't had real momentum in 4-5 years.)
I feel the way I did during the end of the Saul era. I will root for my team when the game is on and love them unconditionally but I am not hyped all week waiting for the game. You said it, not only is Albin a terrible head coach in terms of his play calling and his lineup decisions etc but he is an uninspiring figurehead for a program that, even at 7-5 most seasons, was a threat to win every game it played. Frank wasn't a ra-ra guy but he had charisma. Albin is just blah. Saul was the same way. He didn't use social media, he rarely got into the game with energy. Boals came in and started using social media, started jumping around, dancing -- that's what excites a fanbase.
Hey, Saul could be very funny. His interviews often made me laugh, not at him, but with him. Albin often leaves me scratching my head.
I thought Saul could be funny as well. I'm not saying he wasn't charismatic. I am just saying that his level of enthusiasm was FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR below that of Jeff Boals when it came to being exciting, dynamic and eager to reach fans.
I liked Saul. He was funny and he has a reputation as a winner. It just didn't work out for him here. But Boals is a transformational coach, in my opinion. You could say that he outperformed the expectations others had for him. He did that as a player, as well. We are fortunate he finally got his dream job on, what was it, his third attempt? The fact that he was overlooked, not once, but twice, might someday be in the movie on they make about Jeff, someday. This guy was born to coach Ohio.
