For a minute I thought that I was on the basketball forum. This place gets confusing sometimes! ;-) But, completely seriously, I think if Tony doesn't go down, and we win the MAC that year, as many were predicting, the analysis of the Saul Era, and Saul himself, would be completely different on this board. A "fist pump" at Hurlwy would not be described as "childish," but instead would be cited as showing his great level of competiveness and enthusiasm. Fan boards can be very fickle!
Even when he was here and winning, I thought he was a little too "How do you do, fellow kids." Iunno

Just a complete lack of energy/hope/excitement on this board and it's only mid-October. Shows how quickly a bad hire can cancel out years of improvement. (Although in truth, we haven't had real momentum in 4-5 years.)
I feel the way I did during the end of the Saul era. I will root for my team when the game is on and love them unconditionally but I am not hyped all week waiting for the game. You said it, not only is Albin a terrible head coach in terms of his play calling and his lineup decisions etc but he is an uninspiring figurehead for a program that, even at 7-5 most seasons, was a threat to win every game it played. Frank wasn't a ra-ra guy but he had charisma. Albin is just blah. Saul was the same way. He didn't use social media, he rarely got into the game with energy. Boals came in and started using social media, started jumping around, dancing -- that's what excites a fanbase.
Hey, Saul could be very funny. His interviews often made me laugh, not at him, but with him. Albin often leaves me scratching my head.

I thought Saul could be funny as well. I'm not saying he wasn't charismatic. I am just saying that his level of enthusiasm was FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR below that of Jeff Boals when it came to being exciting, dynamic and eager to reach fans.

I liked Saul. He was funny and he has a reputation as a winner. It just didn't work out for him here. But Boals is a transformational coach, in my opinion. You could say that he outperformed the expectations others had for him. He did that as a player, as well. We are fortunate he finally got his dream job on, what was it, his third attempt? The fact that he was overlooked, not once, but twice, might someday be in the movie on they make about Jeff, someday. This guy was born to coach Ohio.

Anyway, there's a 70% chance of rain in Buffalo tomorrow with temps falling through the upper 50s during the game.

Add to that, they are also calling for pretty decent wind come game time too. I think this all favors Ohio as the running game will be relied on and Ohio also runs its QB. This will affect the passing game where UB has a slight edge that will be negated. I actually think the poor weather is an edge for Ohio.

An old coach once said that rain was the "great equalizer" in football, but that, of course, when fields were natural turf and rain produced a lot of mud.

It reflects the lack of interest in our football program right now.

Looking at conference-only stats puts an interesting light on this game. They show possible vulnerabilities for Buffalo, such as no takeaways, lots of penalties, and a porous passing defense. The disclaimer here is that we've played Akron and CMU and Buffalo has played WMU and Kent, so their opposition has been considerably better. Stats don't lie but they can mislead. Take all these with a big clump of salt.

Ohio offense 30.5 ppg (2nd in the MAC); Buffalo defense 36 ppg (12th).
Ohio defense 23.5 ppg (6th); Buffalo offense 27.5 ppg (4th)
Ohio rushing offense 288.5 ypg (1st); Buffalo rushing defense 202 ypg (11th)
Ohio rushing defense 158 ypg (4th); Buffalo rushing offense 221.5 ypg (4th)
Ohio passing offense 125 ypg (11th); Buffalo passing defense 343 ypg (12th)
Ohio passing defense 239 ypg (7th); Buffalo passing offense 194 ypg (10th)
Ohio sacks allowed 4 (5th); Buffalo sacks by 4 (8th)
Ohio sacks by 8 (2nd); Buffalo sacks allowed 3 (4th)
Ohio penalties 8 (11th); Buffalo penalties 12 (4th)
Ohio penalty yds 42.5 ypg (3rd); Buffalo penalty yds 56.5 ypg (8th)
Ohio giveaways 2; Buffalo takeaways 0 (the MAC doesn't rank turnover stats)
Ohio takeaways 3; Buffalo giveaways 3

One of Pataskla's stats sticks out to me:

Ohio rushing offense 288.5 ypg (1st); Buffalo rushing defense 202 ypg (11th)

Looks like a perfect game for Rogers and a few good RB friends. Run, run and run some more, and then when they least expect it pass. This stat gives me some hope that I had not otherwise had. Go OHIO!

Will we find out today which player caused that unsportsmanlike penalty in the last game that negated our last drive for the WIN?
Was it Tuggle like we were led to believe by the announcers? If it was will the coach discipline him by not starting him today and maybe even keep him off the field for the 1st half?
I for one would be interested in knowing.

That's my understanding. I think I know who it was, but we'll see if a certain guy is dressed this week, if not it will be supporting evidence for what I think is our mutual theory. If he dresses this week, it likely means our theory is wrong. Now what are the odds that both SBH and OCF would be wrong? What would BTC's friend say about that possibility? ;-)

Mathematically?

37.5% since you are wrong 50% of the time and SBH is wrong 75% of the time.

Goal line stand followed by a Rogers 99 yd TD run? No safety this time!!! That’s it…move over, forgive me, and make room…I need to get my seat back on the bandwagon….

I’m trying out a new character called The World’s Most Obvious Man.

Perhaps we were playing the wrong quarterback.

We had another 99 yard TD play back in the 1980s at home against Kent, I believe. It was a short pass where the defender fell down. A highlight of the Lichtenberg era.

How many points will be required for Ohio to win this game? It might take 40 points to make it happen. Long ways to go yet.
